X/Los Lobos

Forums:

I'm staying in San Francisco for a couple of days and am looking forward to seeing X at the Fillmore tonight & tomorrow, as part of a dual headliner with Los Lobos.

X was supposed to play first tonight but I just heard there's something wrong with a member of Los Lobos so they're going on first tonight - a little before 9:00 - and X will start around 10:30.

I've seen Los Lobos many, many times over the years so I'm not that excited about them, and ever since Billy Zoom has had his health issues X has not quite been the nitroglycerin raging can't-miss band they once were. In fact a couple of years ago they were so flat I almost walked out of a show in Santa Cruz and thought sadly that in such a diminished state I would likely never go see them again, but then they played a tiny club in San Jose about a year ago. It was so close I figured I HAD to go to that one but I wasn't very enthused, and while that one started slow as well they ramped it up and ultimately RAGED, and a raging X is a rager for sure so I'm really hoping they'll catch that fire again this weekend.

It looks like X is playing without Los Lobos at the Mystic on Monday, Portland & Seattle later next week and then down in SoCal for a few again with Los Lobos in December.

Two very different but legendary rock 'n roll bands that aren't getting any younger...

GTTS!

BTW, something called ELETTRODOMESTICO (Jane Wiedlin) is opening the Fillmore shows and the ones up north. Anyone know what their deal is/are they worth the trouble to be on time tomorrow to check out?

Love X, use to cover a bunch of their songs!   John Doe was just in Corvallis doing an "interview" segment, played a few acoustic tunes

Enjoy the show(s)

Hey Tom. Jane Weidlin is opening for X here in Portland.  A big difference from a doubleheader with Los Lobos.

Btw,  it was good to run into you at JRAD.

Just saw LOS Lobos last month and they were excellent

I am a Cesar Rojas lackey. I love him and think he is the shit & he knows that.

He needs know re assurance, I am a big big fan of him and his clan

Lots Lobos played the Allman brothers Dont keep me Wondering and crushed it.

Hidalgo sang and flat picked duanes legendary half step glass slide swells on a Gibson firebird.

David hidalgo is one of the best guitarist I have ever seen that can sing lilke an angel too.

Mike!

Thanks again for the beer, it hit the spot!

(That was you who bought that beer, right? My memory is understandably hazy)

Next one is on me!

Yes it was. Glad you enjoyed the cerveza.

Because of this post I just got X tickets for next week.  Thanks for the inspiration and the reminder to GTTS

Some of California's finest. Have a nice time brother.

Let's be accurate... Some of SOUTHERN California's finest. Credit where it's due.

I'm sure it will be a good time in the good ol' Fillmore, and I'm feeling especially good because I just watched the classic cartoon How the Grinch Stole Christmas!

I haven't seen that it years!

So tonight at the Fillmore I expect pop guns, pampoogas, pantookas, and drums! Checkerboards, bizilbigs, popcorn, and plums.

Well, maybe apples instead of plums, but you get the idea.

GO TO THE DAMN SHOW!

Couples of my favorites.  Los Lobos were on point when I saw them at HSBF.  Hope they rise to the occasion for you.

Hidalgo is a great / underrated player- and that band never fails to satisfy.

These shows have been on my radar for weeks but looking like a probably not at this point.

i've never seen Lobos at the Fillmore and never seen X at all, so these shoes were tempting as fuck for me.

the close proximity to the holidays, shitty weather and tons of other potential concerts filling up the calendar has made attending a real drag.

still the tomorrow last minute trigger pull possibility is tormenting me.

Funny lance started this thread; I've been looking for an excuse to ask him where he'd rank these shows on the gtts scale between 'nice' and 'probably should just kill yourself if u don't go'

isn't one of the chics from the Gogo's opening?

And what's this shit about a member of Los Lobos being ill?

if bluelight cursed Steve Berlin so help me!!!!

Last time I saw X was a few years ago at the City Winery here in NYC, first thing Doe said when he came out was, who the fuck booked us in this room? (if you don't know its a small place with tables and chairs) No one can dance,!!!! then they proceeded to blow the roof off the place

As it happens Los Lobos is booked there next month 12/15-17, 2 sets acoustic and electric, I've got a late Chanukkah Party on the 15th, going to try and go Sunday the 16th

I was at those City Winery shows and we made room to dance. lol

Those were some great shows. X played full albums each night - one night was Under The Big Black Sun and so we got to hear stuff they never play live like Come Back To Me (with Billy Z. on saxophone) and Leadbelly's Dancing With Tears in My Eyes.

Yes, yes GTTS.

I was there the night they played Los Angeles

E never seen X?

Tsk tsk...

We saw them last year with Mike Watt and Meat Puppets. Flawless show.

I remember that triple bill, was that at the Fillmore?

that was probably pretty awesome.

don't u sass me, turtle!

We saw them at the Observatory in Santa Ana just before Christmas.

If I were there for Los Lobos last night I would have been pretty disappointed, as it was Hidalgo who wasn't playing. I got there for about the last fifteen minutes of their set, just long enough to catch La Bamba>Good Lovin'>La Bamba, and while it was good it was obviously missing something. I'm glad I didn't get there too soon and was wondering if they were giving refunds, since David Hidalgo is an essential piece of that band to be missing. It must have been a major bummer for LL fans.

As for X, they didn't do any of the quasi-acoustic shit they've been doing in the recent past, they just let it rip from the start. As I said in the OP they're not as amazing, at least to me, as they used to be now that Billy Zoom sits and plays a hollow body electric instead of a Les Paul. He still plays the same riffs, but his own energy level isn't the same and while the guitar he plays is fine I don't understand why he doesn't play a Les Paul anymore, as that thing would scream & SNARL like only a Les Paul can. I miss that particularly raw sound & energy that guitar would bring.

Still, they were just fine and it was a rockin' good time. JD & DJ were ripping it up as always and Exene is just a rock star. After a good X show I always feel like I've been through a good workout and walk out loose and feeling fine. As I get older & creakier I should probably go on tour just for that feeling. They are truly a rock band.

E, I'd say that while X isn't getting any younger and they're not maybe as amazing as they once were, if you've never seen them they should be a bucket list band. They are a "punk band" and that puts some people off, but beyond the fact that they have great songs they're also just a damn good, damn talented live band.

Years ago when my friend dragged me to see them at the Warfield when Tony Gilkyson was on guitar I was certain I wouldn't like them - "All their songs sound the same" was my lament, and that's something I hear from others who don't "get" X.

I was wrong. It took me about three songs to get how good they were and by the end of the set I was a full fan. Sometimes it takes them a while to get going, but when they warm up they still can really rip it up.

I'm not sure at this point I'd drive down from Redding or wherever in the sticks you live for an hour & fifteen minute set of 2018 X, but you should definitely see that band when you get the chance. Is it easier for you to get to Petaluma? They won't be sharing time with Los Lobos on Sunday and they're playing good right now. Nothing like a lovely Sunday drive after all the horrors & smoke.

(gtts)

BTW, for anyone who may be going tonight, I just heard that X will be playing after Los Lobos again tonight. I suppose that means Hidalgo isn't playing again. Sucks for Los Lobos fans.

I hope he's OK.

X exploded tonight.

God damn they can freaking shread.

Still.

Folks told me that David Hidalgo did play with Los Lobos tonight. I missed it. Whatever.

X DESTROYED IT!!!!!!!!

Despite some technical/personal issues this was a  VERY SATISFYING show!!!

X!!!!!!!!!!!

Just a little rock 'n roll, that's all I ask.

And sometimes I get a little bit more.

Far out!
