You may not like Phish, and you may call him Ashtrey, but this is pretty cool...

Forums:

I especially liked his quote about how he & the others have never seen Phish. Jerry had said something similar about the Grateful Dead, and that is something that I've often thought about and is something that must be trippy for any popular musician/band to deal with.

Who calls Trey "Ashtrey"?

lol I’ve never heard Ashtrey before either nice

Ashtrey was a popular nickname for him on the old Philzone.

A pretty good one too.

And I'm a big fan.

Ol' Red seems to be in a real good space right now and the music definitely backs that up.

Nobody talks about his music or songs.

Can someone post a link to a clip where he is splitting the universe open?

Mike never molested a teenager and got roughed up by hell's angels on a dock in long island awhile back. Fake news probably created by bitter string cheese fans.

Knotesau, Tweezer is Playin or dark star like jam vehicle. Carini is a balls to the wall metal rocker.they do a great job on cross eyed and painless. Weekapaug Groove is funky as all get out.  I can go on..Ain't no time to hate brah

The riff in carini sucks.

Taste also sucks. Weak drums and bass feel. It's just a boring vehicle for a little guitar soloing over nothing.

Filler.

carini is an absolute rager. however it barely compensates for the existence of possum.

Daylight, unless you've seen a Flintstones macaroni solo in the middle of a Possum, you haven't seen a Possum.

Just sayin'.

i mean now.

and like creating psychedelia.

even a weakened dnb hit that realm 2-3 x;....`

Run like a Hater(Antelope), out of control

I'm not a hater, champ. Just being honest.

The band has trouble putting a good show on for 1/3 - 2/3 of every show because of the boring, rhythmless slow songs, the stupid teases and the comedy bits.

There are moments when they put together 30-40 minutes of decent instrumental background music. Rare moments.

Slacker has a lumpy head

Some people just don't like the Phish.  To each their own.

I did a GD tour once with a dude who hated Phish so much, he would bitch people out for wearing a Phish shirt on the GD lot.

Can someone start calling him asstrey?

Every ass needs a trey.

lol phish chicks facebook group.

Anyone beat the shit out of the guy that tapes off his dancing space yet?

If I could I would, but i don't know how

What is their Black Peter, Stella Blue or Comes A Time?

>>>>Ashtrey was a popular nickname for him on the old Philzone.

thats highly debatable

Here's a few in no particular order.

Why are people so pissed and spiteful that someone enjoys a band that they don't?  To each their own. If there's joy involved for someone, it can't be all bad. Geez.

When The Circus Comes to Town

Oh, I see you edited and added that one too, OCLT

^Yep, was adding as i remembered, probably missed a few

The wormhole always seems to open when somebody covers Talking Heads.

>> When The Circus Comes to Town

That's Los Lobos but you guys probably already knew that.

^yep, but it's been in regular enough rotation through the years.

Anything but me, Mountains in the Mist

Phish has no Jerry type ballads.   And that's ok.  Very few bands do and those ballads were arguably the best part of the GD.  One of largest differences between the bands' music.

I think Trey tried to write one with Waste.  Good song but nowhere near Garcia/Hunter.

Carini is one of the best things going for that band.

Why do people spend time on a DBMB trying to convince people that a band sucks? good question

It might not be the band as much as the songs.

Too many songs require a change 4 minutes in to actually sound good.

Carini has the get past the awful distortion riff to get to the wah wahs.

>>>thats highly debatable<<<

It's better than Fake Jerry.

Pretty cool gift and also a nice reaction from Trey Antipasto.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's kind of funny that for as long as I've been a zoner ('04ish), this same GD vs Phish 'argument' has been going on.

It took seeing the Phish a couple times (with the right rugs) before I 'got it', but it was the same for me with the GD (my first GD show seemed like a never ending dirge compared to the hard rockin' shows I was accustomed to).

And I would not compare the two bands musically as they are not really all that comparable.

I also wouldn't compare Zappa or Yes or King Crimson or Gabriel era Genesis or Camel to the GD, but I still get off on 'em just the same and I can totally understand why some deadheads might not.

That type of rational thinking/posting is why you didn't win the zonie this year Hall.

I'm not trying to compare them to the Dead.

I'm looking for the ratio of good songs vs bad. Honestly.

The Dead thing comes up because zoners aren't afraid to say which bathroom Bob songs they don't like and how often he drove the bus off the road.

Phish fans on this board are too passive aggressive about a little criticism of some over the top silliness.

Let it out.

Does humor belong in music?

Slack, i gave you my list of bathroom tunes, but here you go again...

But i believe you might not agree.

My first Philzone username was Hall(Weigh)...

Humor ain't a bad thing. I just haven't laughed as hard at Possum as some.

Phish is probably now best compared to "your Dad" rather than to "the Dead."

My dad brought Beatles and Santana albums into the house when I was a wee lad (in the late 60's), so that would just about fit, Ateix.

Good shit. Hoisting one up for good dads and cool music, dude.

My dad brought sweet rolls into the house.

(He was a baker)

Hoisting one up for sweet dads and cool rolls, dude.

... Wait, no Elvis?

I think the big question is, is Phish better than Graham Parker?

I have to tell people that I listen to dad rock because I get funny looks when I say that Wilco is edgy.

My pop used sing doo-wop, off-key.

Could be why I like phish's a cappella

>>>Could be why I like phish's a cappella

and Zappa

My dad eschewed doo wop because his brothers and sisters were cholos.

He did teach me the michelada.

Yes, zappa too

Also could be why i like instrumentals

I love singing Zappa off key (only way I know how)... it drives my wife batty, though.

I have been in you, baby~

^can't exactly bust into that one just anywhere

Mr. Hall is correct.

2 different bands , 2 distinct different styles of playing.

-hard to impossible to compare the 2.

but the fan base for the 2 overlap.

Does Talking Heads or Radiohead have any songs as bad as Makisupa Policeman?

>My dad eschewed doo wop because his brothers and sisters were cholos.<

Could you elaborate,  Slack?

My pop was a teenager in the 1950's, grew up in southwest philly, listening to the geater with the heater

My dad didn't listen to doo wop because my aunts and uncles did.

Crosseyed and Painless

Mama always told me not to look into the eyes of the sun.

I try to convey what you strive to condone...

They played NICU at my first show. First time I heard it.

Tweezer is like their playing in the band if that helps out at all

>Taste also sucks. Weak drums and bass feel. It's just a boring vehicle for a little guitar soloing over nothing.

Of all the silly Phish songs to criticize, this assclown picks the not terribly silly and very hard to play "Taste" to pick apart. Weak drums. You are such a fucking douche!!

If it moves you, enjoy.

It doesn't move me.

Just fuck off dude!!!

We don't like the same music.

Plenty of people don't like the same shit as you.

I'm peering out through your opacity...

The entire Amy's Farm show from 91 is now out there on video...

Knotsau, indulge me if you will, as I think you are being a wee bit disengenous. You started out saying that you were just providing constructive criticism of this Band, simiar to what we Dead-Heads do with the Dead. But then you basically go on to say that after a few minutes of each song, the Band has to resort to tricks, gimmickry, etc to keep the song interesting. So it seems like you don't really care for the band at all, which is your perogative, of course. But you keep repeating said perogative, so i think we get the point.

songs suck, the silly stuff is borderline insufferable, but phish, as a live band, and as improvisors, are better than 90% of what phil and bob has put out over the last 10 years. its sad but true.

I watched half of the 7-20-91 show yesterday.

>>better than 90% of what phil and bob has put out over the last 10 years.

Well

let's see what Trey and Mike come up with 20 years from now

when they are both in their 70's

They might just be going into the comfort zone by that time too

phish will probably suck even worse then bob and phil when they are 70+.

but for right now, if you want to scratch "that itch", there are not that many options, and if you ignore the silly stuff, phish is one of the best and only options to scratch that itch

ive found alot of really satisfying improv in the jazz and free improv circles, but there is just something about a drug band that is hard to replace.

You ever do Phish sober?

Now we are debating whether or not a band will potentially "suck" 20 years from now?  we have definitely hit rock bottom

There must be something more than this...

You ever do Phish sober?

why would i do that

>>You ever do Phish sober?

Quite a few times in 89 and even in 1990. At least at first when I showed up for the gig.

Are they as prog as the big prog bands?

^any chance of one of the "big prog bands" writing a tune like ass handed?

I don't know. I don't know much about prog.

Are they better than Southside Johnny live????

Since Prog Rock was brought up, assume most Phish fans have seen this clip of Phish inducting Genesis into the RRHOF.  Quite a who's who in the audience.  Not sure they know what to make of the band. Regardless, I think Phish delivers here...

Pretty lackluster applause from tne crowd after that. It sounded like a lot of golf claps.

yeah, but how many of them were old Genesis fans (or had ever even heard Watchers before)?

I thought they did a good job with a difficult, technical song.  They didn't try to make the song "their own", but rather, they seemed to try to reproduce it as closely as possible to the original. It seems obvious that they were influenced by this genre and I think this performance illustrates that very well.

Imaginary creatures are trapped in birth on celluloid

 > It seems obvious that they were influenced by this genre and I think this performance illustrates that very well<

Influenced?  Yes, but I wouldn't call them a prog band.

I agree... more of a hodge-podge band.

Gorp band.

lol.  I'm surprised the Phish don't have a song called Gorp (or Dolt).

They're a Phish band.

>>>Pretty lackluster applause from tne crowd after that<<<

Isn't that's how pretty much all performances are greeted at those lame events?

Nothing but stiff, stuffed suits are in the audience at the HOF ceremonies; there's absolutely nothing "rock 'n roll" about those deals. Those events are the main reason the R&R HOF sucks.

>>>Quite a who's who in the audience.  Not sure they know what to make of the band<<<

I imagine most of the musicians are thinking, "How the hell do these guys sell out Madison Square Garden 13 nights in a row and I can barely carry one?"

And the industry executives are thinking, "These guys can sell out Madison Square Garden 13 nights in a row. How the hell can we make money from them?"

Not all 13 sold out.

Phish Baker’s Dozen Residency Grosses $15 Million

Billboard’s Boxscore column details figures for the top-selling concerts reported over the last week and the figures from Phish‘s historic Baker’s Dozen residency at Madison Square Garden top this week’s list. Promoter Live Nation reported gross ticket sales of $15,041,405 for the 13-show run.

Phish sold out five of the 13 Baker’s Dozen shows as per Live Nation’s tally. All told attendance was 227,385 out of a capacity of 236,278. While the tally for the quartet’s run is no doubt impressive, Dead & Company grossed over $4 million from just one show at Citi Field in nearby Queens on June 24.

I've never heard Genesis.

We can accept not seeing Jerry...thats age based...not ever listening to Genesis...(especially early Genesis,) is unacceptable.

Cancel that mead....

The song posted doesn't make me want to hear more.

If you know of some better songs you can share them. Or don't.

Keep it to yourself. I don't care.

...As soon as the lamb lies down on broadway.

The three of us are going to listen to that during dinner.

I'll let you know how its received.

Second song has a Wilson riff.

This is a long album.

You should really listen to their albums, not just a song...as they started in the 60 s, and some need to be listened to as a whole etc...you may want to Google their lineup , and even style history as their style changes w lineup changes etc...but, each lineup prob has an album (or 2, ) worth listening to to.

Try Duke for a post Gabriel album.

And ya, ^^ thats a real long one...they toured just that for a year.

I'm not going to listen to the whole catalog.

Who has?

Who could?

>>>>We can accept not seeing Jerry...thats age based..

who didn’t see Jerry?

I’ll listen to Phish over prog rock.

>>>Not all 13 sold out<<<

Dammit man, don't let facts get in the way of a point.

And this may be the most most posts on any thread I've ever started.

Thanks Knotseau.

You're welcome, man.

I like zoning.
