Easy. Garcia.

When it's over.

I like psychedelic jamming as much as the next guy, but "Space" as performed by the GD rarely rose to that level.

That moment when someone would lose their shit out in the crowd.

The Tesla balls were kind of cool too.

the sounds

When it goes into The Wheel or when it's on my stereo and I pick up a passenger and drop them off while it's still playing and neither of us acknowledges what we're listening to.

The thermosphere

Keeping the neighbors guessing

When the heavy set New Yorker loaded to the gills on acid, pills, and booze would yell out "Play Daaaaaaahk Staaaaah Jerrrrrrrrrry!!!"

Crickets chirping, train horn, loud chaos, ....the chaos transitioning into the second part of the second set.

SPAC...def my favorite part of SPACE

Always running into people I knew in high school while waiting in the bathroom line.

Short/no lines at the restroom and concessions

Being really fucking scared!  On the verge of tears and looking at my show neighbors and seeing there eyes well up too.   Like being on a small craft out at sea in a thunderstorm...

this is what a slacker thread would look like if slacker started good threads

What would you consider the best thread you’ve started, Daylight?

>>>>>Short/no lines at the restroom and concessions

Did people just pee and grab beer during drums?  I only saw one shoe.

Ballads are my bathroom breaks.

>Did people just pee and grab beer during drums?  I only saw one shoe.<

I did, usually grabbed a water though. I would walk the concourse too.

Concourse walk ....great for dancing in between dancers, spinners, and spunions...especially behind stage, 300 sections...;)

The most consistent era of SPACE is from 82-85 although there are good space jams before that obviously, they are generally rather short. 1983 is a particularly great year for space jams. Space was still pretty good later on, but the MIDI era is less trippy and interesting

When I first heard some 80s space on tape, I thought that was what they did at the acid tests.

When I first heard the acid test tapes, I thought it sounded like a bunch of tweakers.

"The Barbary Coast ..."

When they come out of it and go into something really good

1992-95 all the rainforest stuff Jerry's midi...the Bralove weirdness..Phil..the beam

The first notes of Morning Dew.

balcony jumpers

I always loved this space from Portland OR Aug 28, 1983, slowly builds, melodic, Jerry driven, good times!

Basically depent on syd...

When someone would yell, "Play a song!"

Even when I disagreed with the sentiment, it was still kinda funny.

everything. the beam later on (if drumz included), just like all GD, if they were into it you knew it.  they would sometimes seem to want to blow my little mind. it would make me giggle.  oh and freaky midi effects later on. but what i really loved was a chance to sit, puff, and listen to something different.

pee song: rooster, wang dang etc. never ballads, never drumspac

Who needed to go to the bathroom during drums> space when there were so many Bob Weir songs played during the show for that purpose?

You spent half your time at Dead shows wandering into the bathrooms?

Apparently most Deadheads are diabetic or alcoholic.

Wandering at Dead shows was fun Knotesau, sorry u missed it.

You fought the law and the law won.

The end.

I like DNB space as well.

Light mirrors

space is great when it is in the middle of a song, but IMO it was the fact that there was this required part of the show where the band did a space jam, that did not evolve from any other song or improvisation, so it often felt like  psychedelic masturbation done by people who were not as in tune with that kind of thing as they once were.

sometimes it took off, and when it did, space has some of my favorite moments of the 80's and 90's, hands down. dark star>drums>space>dark star from 03/29/90 is an all time great jam segment.

space in the drums>space format really only worked when it worked up to a very fast tempo, and got noisy and discordant, or when it simply got very very dark, and again, noisy, a la "the raven" space.

when i first started seeing dead shows i could not understand why space was a bathroom break for most people...i kinda looked down at folks who were not enraptured by it...now that ive seen that kind of thing a million times, its gotten pretty old for me unless it is loud, dark and noisy enough to be genuinely scary, and flowing in between uptempo, discordant free jazz runs and sudden noises and clangs. the spaceship kinda shit usually does not fly for me...i cant say ive ever seen that style of space that really grabs me in a way i can honestly say wasnt just because i was tripping. IME phish is better at the softer, spaceship noise kinda space.

a "space" jam is what i typically look forward to most at any kind of jam/psychedelic show, and at first i just assumed it was because i like psychedelics and improv, but as time went on i began to view it as a way to indulge my love of noise music and heavily experimental stuff in the middle of a dead show, where noise music and experimental stuff in the vein of  zorn, albert ayler or sonny sharrok is seldom tapped into.

You were supposed to smoke pre-rolled joint & start to roll another, because that doobbie you lit &  just passed ain't coming back.

Met some cool folks during space. Always had my back to the band & was facing the fans, just so I can look back, like today ~

It was like church to me; "Peace be with-you (shake hands) & also with you"

There was a true existing medium of spirituality, love for God and all of his creations & a balance in our Universe, that was no different then my feelings (& that Band's )towards life already.

This was new to many & the look on their faces of a true new enhancement and understanding was powerful, while Bob, Jerry & Phil were letting you know, that's where we at man"

Peace be with you ~

Funny story... I had been going to shows steadily for about 10 years, and my Mom had asked me a couple times to take her to a show sometime. Not long after, they announced 2 shows at Star Lake Amphitheater in 92. So I mailed in for tickets as usual and ended up getting great seats for the first night, front and center in front of Jerry about 8 rows from the stage. So I this became the show that I would take my Mom to. So we went, and it was a decent show but not great, and we had a good time. On the way home after the show, we were discussing songs and the scene, and there was a bit of dialogue that went:

Mom: "So after the drum segment, what was that?"

Me: 'Oh, thats a part of the show called space... its kind of a free form jam where they can do whatever they want without sticking to a solid song structure, using various sound effects and noises to improvise and experiment."

Mom: 'I think it was a bunch of bullshit!"

^Can't fool Mom

When all shapes, sounds and movements began to behave like time, slowly moving in a single, linear direction. At a certain juncture (only if you were able to capture and secure it properly mind you), time (ergo Space) would then split and convert into visible particles. I believe this particle matter was made out of hydrogen, electromagnetic radiation and variety of molecular dust particles. I don't really know. I'm not a scientist.

Anyway, when time converted into these particles, you could then move it around freely, just like any other dimension. The ability to leverage Space to freely manipulate the measured action of time....was pretty cool, pretty rare.

Mom story cracks me up.   Love it.

The Witchcraft Spaces were the best.  Those Spaces where they  Jammed out in keys banned by Churchianity.

Which keys are those?

F flat.....

I always liked how one out of every 200 or so people would still be up grooving hard during space dancing to the sounds in their head.

Doggie dickie, doggie dickie, doggie dickie......forget which shoe?

when other bands do "space"
