College HOOPS

Forums:

Another season has begun and already plenty of chaos.

The nerd in me has started mapping preseason rankings vs post season/post tourney rankings for the past 10 years.   Pretty interesting trends.  Only through about 4 seasons.  I had hoped it would showcase which coaches do more with their teams based on preason ranking of talent but I think it shows more which teams are over ranked vs under ranked.

Go Cards...down with KY

http://www.ronmcbay.us/HLS/index.html

Zang, you may like Ron's blog. I have been in his final four pool for over 10 years, I think TJfool also is in. I won it all one year. He tracks the stats going way back in the pool, and has catogories like king of the 90's. He also blogs about games and is pretty knowlegable

Excellent.  I was thinking of creating a blog if it could pay for itself but that's highly doubtful.   I sure would have more fun than my current job.

Nate Silver some how made it work.

The Hoyas are stinkin it up early this year. I see potentially doing damage down the road this year if they stay healthy and somehow sneak into the big dance.

Good thing i have UNC also, thanks to my better half.

(THE BIG DANCE)

>>>The Hoyas are stinkin it up early this year

Don't sweat it, Louisville already blew a 22 point lead.   It's early and early doesn't matter, thankfully.

I have not seen the gators play yet this season, but the new coach likes the three ball a lot. I still believe that Billy Donovan lost his appetite to recruit the last year or two of his tenure, and the team had to be built up again. One thing about SEC basketball is that its not a far climb to the top of the hill, and I always believe that Calipari's game time coaching is UK's Achilles heel.

Zang, I believe Ron above is also in the atl, my buddy that lives in the Suwanee section of Atlanta first invited me into his blog and pool.

UCLA with a nice road win.

I wonder how often he comes to the city for games....

I dont know about Ron, but my buddy works at emory and is always going to games, GT, Hawks, Falcons, Braves when they were downtown. One of his friends is also a female ref in the nba,

interesting...my old classmate works at emory.  What dept does he work in....I think she is in campus planning

Been reading about the three Ball kids today.  I'm clearly late to the table but holy shit is UCLA in good hands for the next four years.

My buddy does IT at the he campus, I think he has been there for about 20 some years.

That's a long time to be at one job.   I'm nearing 9 at my current one....it's too long.

Here's the story on the Balls.

Good article

Gators vs. Duke tonight

Win one for buncombe!

Tough game Joe.   Still, considering their fire power it was a decent showing.

could only watch the first few minutes, sucks getting up at 4:00 am. I was impressed in the Gators size. They played sloppy though the few minutes that I did watch, the huge center is a athletic specimen but not so much with a touch on his shooting.

First 11 Gator Games have been on the road due to the updating of the O'Connell Center (Campus Arena)

3 player on Duke outscored the Gators 74 point total. If that is all that is going to contribute for Duke they will have some problems.

Huge win for the Cards last night.   Season is over and it's a success.   Q had a career game but I fear it might hurt in the long term.   He's a keep shooting guy even if his night is off.

Of course Grayson is overcomplicating matters today and getting all the headlines.   What a Dbag.  Some folks say he should be permanently banned...I don't feel that strongly but I think for him as a player he is done.   This will break him.  Supposed to be a first rounder last year and I think there is little chance he'll be drafted.   Season is long so there is plenty of time to rebuild...lucky for him.

Kid needs to grow up.
Third time he pulled that crap.

Then he was crying like a baby in the post game interview.
Very immature.

I think it's just a natural reaction for him unfortunately.    He's clearly not thinking when he pulls this shit.   And I think he's embarrassed.  How many articles were there about how this season was about changing is bad name?

Maybe he should embrace it.   I feel like Reddick embraced it a little more.   Just be the dick and let it fuel your desire to score 40 points a night.

Your allowed 5 fouls

Watch Auburn, folks. They are 9-2 right now and are starting 4 freshmen, one of whom graduated from high school two weeks ago. Two of them are 5-star recruits. We have a great class committed for next year already.

We're not UK (yet), but things are trending up. Bruce Pearl is the most popular guy in Auburn these days...

Bruce Pearl is the Greg Allman of the college basketball world, he is a rat.

Auburn hasn't played anyone besides Purdue and got crushed by them.  They barely beat Mercer by 2.   I wouldn't get too excited.

Pearl is more about the show than the coaching.

However, I would love it if Ky finally got some competition.   They basically get to hibernate for the next couple of months.

Auburn beat Oklahoma and UConn on the road this week. 10-2 with SEC play on tap. When I said keep an eye on them I really meant next year and beyond, though they could make some noise this year.

BTW, we beat Kentucky last year...

Watched Oregon - UCLA last night.

Coaches son misssd the front end of a one and one with five seconds left, Oregon hits a three with .08 for the two point win.

Good game.

Plus Bill Walton.

ACC mix up last night.   Duke, UNC, UVA all lost.

Allen back in the starting lineup for Duke tonight.

One game suspension, that'll learn him. What a joke.

Villanova goes down.

One game ban for Grayson is ridiculous.

Louisville lost again...they are a head case team this year.

check out my cousins kid. paul jorgenson

hes the white guy. he just transferred to butler and has to sit the remainder of the season but should provide some entertainment next year

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-BoqAgd9DEE

Fantastic night of hoops last night.   3 top 4 teams go down.   Plus the Ville crushed Pitt by 50+.    That's what makes college hoops so much fun.

This whole idea of announcing the top 16 teams like NCAA Football does the top four picks is kind of pointless I think but I'll hold judgment until after it happens.   There is so much change week to week and in the tourneys that looking at it early seems premature.

>This whole idea of announcing the top 16 teams like NCAA Football does the top four picks is kind of pointless I think but I'll hold judgment until after it happens.   There is so much change week to week and in the tourneys that looking at it early seems premature.

One of the stupidest things ever proposed, and these are the people we think are experts. The top teams to make the tourney, take a fucking look at the top 25 rankings and you pretty much have it combined with conference leaders.

If you want to make it somewhat of a show then make it about the teams on the bubble, but even that would be boring.

I do like the bubble idea.   Much more interesting.   Who cares who is at the top.

This will be the year a smaller school wins it all

and I think this is the end for The K

Somebody else said the same thing about him but I gotta say the comment caught me off guard.    I don't see him going out like this.    No way.    Do you think health reasons will do it?   Or loss of control of the team?

Just my opinion but I think he is old and not into it as much as in the past. I could still see him coaching National Teams for the Olympics and etc., but I think the grind that is Duke is done. Again just my oppinion

The Nova tip in buzzer beater was where it was at last weekend.

Jay Wright is such a good coach.

Kennard at Duke is a stone cold killer, the next great white boy in the NBA ala Gordon Hayward

Kennard is good.....but he is just this year's Grayson and a few years back Reddick.

JJ was a lot better than grayson.

Kennard is also 6'6" and I think that will help his nba game, especially going to the basket, which is something jj cannot do in The League

Top 5 of hated duke basketball

5- Mike Giminski

4-Grayson Allen

3- JJ Red Dick

2- Christian Laetner

1- The K

Should be a good doubleheader tonight

NC - Duke
Oregon - UCLA

Good DH for sure.   Although I'm getting sick of reading about Grayson every second of every day.

I gotta think this Tourney is fully up for grabs.    Nova looks tough again but beatable....everyone is beatable.

Gators are putting it together, blow out of U.K. Last week followed by win over Georgia. This team is capable of making a March run. Very much like the billyball, threes and athletic 6'8" guys playing D and running the break. Chirozza makes it all go. Also Rick Barry's son shooting granny shots is don't miss TV

It is wide open this year, no clera cut favorites and about 20 teams that can win it all, its going to be a great run of conference tourneys and Big dancing

I think Kansas is top 2.   Jackson is ridiculous and probably gets my vote for POY.   He does it all and it's clear his team can't keep up with him.

I think Nova and Kansas and then it's a free for all and just depends on the draw.   Either of those teams can go down but I think they are a step above everyone else.

Louisville stinks with it's PG back.   The guy is talented but he completely trips up offense.   One of those guys who thinks he can shoot better than he can.  With him gone we were crushing it but I don't see Pitino pulling him from the starting lineup.   On the positive, if somehow Mitchell stays for another year we will be poised for 2018.

Auburn needs to fire that rat Bruce. Gators totally embarrass Auburn at home 114-95

go gators!

<chomp<chomp

Did anyone play defense in that game?   While a 19 point spanking is nice, UF still let Auburn drop 95.

And 114??  Holy shit, that's some offense.

Rick Berry's son put up 30 and snapped his granny free throw streak of 42 in a row. First half was tight with both teams scoring going neck to neck. Second half the gators upped the d and continued scoring. This coach is the real deal

Big win by Uconn last night, beating 18-8 Memphis, coming from 17 down to win 62-62

After a terrible start to season, Uconn is now 13-12, hot, and has a brutal six game stretch to finish season....but, if they can win say, 5 out of 6, and win a cpl in conferance tourney, they can reach 20 wins...and the NCAAs

Jambone, keep an eye out for Tacko Fall on UCF when they play UConn. Freakshow in that Manute Bol kinda way, but not as lovable

Kansas at Baylor today, should be good.

>>>to win 62-62

That's as close as it gets.

I will, Fabes, and Uconn wins again today at buzzer....yet, somehow closer at 64-63..lol..now 14-12...tied for third in conferance, and winners of 5 in a row

Down goes contenders

Here's my Alma Mater's coach almost having an on-court heart attack:

http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/18729662/bob-hugg...

"I'm like 99.9 percent of other guys my age in America -- I got AFib"

99,9%?  Well, maybe in West-Tenn-Tucky

((((((((((HUGGY BEAR))))))))))

Huggins' father was a coaching legend in Ohio at Ghanadenhutten Indian Valley South. I followed his teams including when Bob played thru the local paper. His two brothers Larry and Harry were all ohio players as was Bob. I always was a huge high school basketball fan growing up and used attend a ton of Canton Mckinley games, fun times.

Trump is stopping in at the small catholic school my kids attended in orlando. If he speaks in the gym look for the championship banners hanging from the rafters, from when I coached my son's teams.

I remember hearing about his SE Ohio roots, & I know there are quite a few SE Ohio Mountaineers fans (in Hill country) & it's prime Mountaineer recruiting ground.

Congrats on your kid's school, but if I watch Trump for more than a minute there's a risk I break my TV so I refrain from doing so . . .

Getting psyched for a good tournament although I'm not expecting much this year.

Hoping Clemson can push duke a little so they are exhausted for tomorrows game.  Unfortunately I'm thinking it will be quick.

Allen Iverson in the crowd at MSG for G'town - St John's.

Freshman gaurd for SJU Shamorie Ponds is something special, team should be good next year.

The madness begins

kansas down

baylor down

and another UNC vs Duke game

oh how sweet it is

Bwaaaa haaaa LMFAO @ the "Hillbillies" vs "Flatlanders" Smack Talk goin' down in the ESPN Comments section of upcoming WVU vs KSU Big 12 matchup.  I'm gonna be good & Loaded, already gots a Head Start  . . .

Duke wins, and UNC will go on a long run in the ncaa, this loss might of swayed me to pick them to win it all

That Bob Knight interview was sad, I was listening to it live, so full of hate

http://www.ronmcbay.us/HLS/index.html

great no money pool, tracks it year to year, and he also posts and tracks all of the talking heads from all of the networks.

fabes...tough game coming up.

Personally I'm not looking towards the Mich matchup tomorrow.   I

I think the mighty gator handles UV. UF's coach is the real deal imo. I still think the players are a year away from being really good, elite eight good. This years team's inexpeirence will show vs. Villanova but the loss will make next years team better. Gators have struggled with higher ranked opponent all year, and Vandy

i thinker I picked UM losing their first game, their tired, UL takes them easily

Feeling real good about the gators taking down Wisco. Final four is in reach and with a little more luck who knows.

Zang i I was a little off on my UM prediction but love Pitino going down, um may have to change that sentence due to the subject matter.

when is captain sex shop going to retire?

Patino and K getting knocked out was sweet.

Hopefully Calipari will be next.

Finally Georgetown fires Thompson JT3,  still blame that final four loss to ohio state on him. Now if we can hire a decent coach we might get our PG recruit back. Good news on the hilltop.

Calamari is sorta due and i'm fine with him winning unless they are playing UNC..

Go Tar Heels.

Calipari is still paying players, always has and always will, the pay is that good, that the jones needs to be satisfied. The lowest form of coach in the business, and a terrible game time coach.

Good luck with Patrick Fog, gtown will need it

I'd be happy if they now decided to start recruiting based on talent and not skin color. I honestly hope they go out of the Georgetown family for this hire. Are you saying you think we will hire Patrick Ewing? his son is one of our assistants.

Good games again tonight, we'll see how i feel when the game starts. It may all become clear and my calamari hatred will surface. You're right.

He says he prefers a head coaching job in the NBA (Ewing) I still think they interview him and he may change his mind depending on how good the strip clubs are around Georgetown

He says he prefers a head coaching job in the NBA (Ewing) I still think they interview him and he may change his mind depending on how good the strip clubs are around Georgetown

Shaka Smart and Tommy Amaker are names that are popping up.

Three good games last night. Bill Murray is happy.

Speaking of clubs in DC, i ran into Patrick one late night in DC way back when. Story by request only.

Bobby Hurley maybe. If Big John gets involved in recruiting Patrick he may be swayed. Still think they need to go out of Georgetown family on this.

Hey, that guard from WVU looked almost as old as Greg Odom.

Me and the wife were saying, how the hell do they let some 40 something man play with all these kids

The Hurley that I hear mentioned is Danny Hurley

go gators!

<chomp<chomp

Great game!

Around 40 would be correct, lol. At least WVU has Huggie.

Shaka and the Notre Dame guy said no thanks, correct on Danny Hurley at this point our clear number one choice.

Good matchups coming up saturday.

Go Tar Heels !

First thing they did was say Smart and Brey declined then we all thought the logical choice was Hurley. The fan base including myself was lukewarm on Ewing. Then they played us and floated Ammaker as the frontrunner which nobody wanted then announced Ewing was coming in to interview, so it became Tommy vs Patrick and all the fans naturally preferred Patrick.. Still i would have preferred Hurley however Patrick is a good choice, clearly Big John runs the show still and the Thompson Legacy Era lives on.. There is hope here and i'm happy with the hire. Back to prominence? lets hope so.

Not sure how they could avoid interviewing Tom Crean once he was let go from IU, that to me is a head scratcher imo. He got a raw deal at IU, and is the best coach out there, Hurly would of been another good choice. I hope Ewing does good because the Big East and Georgetown getting better (along with other big east schools) is good for basketball. For ages the big east tourney was next to the big dance in excitement, better than the ACC Tourney imo.

Still cannot believe they blew up the best basketball conference for teams wanting football money but cannot play football

Crean is the worst......he may be worst than Calipari.

Dude is a total prick and and an overrated coach.  He had a good gig at Marquette, Wade bumped his status up, and his true skill set was revealed at IU.    Not sure how he got a raw deal.   He recruited decent talent.  They were ranked high and he didn't deliver.

Plus he had that outburst last year I think on the court against one of his former assistant coaches.   Pathetic.  On my top three most hated active coaches

 >>>Still cannot believe they blew up the best basketball conference for teams wanting football money but cannot play football

No brainer for many schools.   ACC now champion in both Football and Basketball.....baseball may not be far behind (but no one cares).

The ACC winning in football has everything to do with FSU & The U joining the conference, and nothing to do with any of the Big East teams that joined. The southern athletes do not go to school anywhere up north unless it paves the way to the professional leagues as in Michigan and OSU. Sure the three stars will still end up at places close to the mason Dixon line like WVU and Louisville, but that talent is going to thin out with Charley Strong at USF and Lame Kitten in Florida. Louisville is the only team that has brought any football to the conference and they pretty much have sold their soul to the devil to get there, just like basketball in keeping Pimptino on the payroll after pimping whores to the players. Pimptrino is another beauty

At one point Petrino must have been a decent recruiter.   I'm not sure those days are still around with his jumping ship approach and his sweet motorcycle ride.   It's a tough challenge for schools that pull in 3 star recruits to jump to the next level.   It feels like Louisville has been trying to do it for years and occasionally has a decent team.  While I've never been a Petrino fan and was disgusted Louisville picked him up, I'd like to think his proven success at the college level could translate into a decent "continuous" program after about 5 years.  The problem is that will be the time he moves on.

To think Louisville is the only team that pimped whores.....let's be real.   I don't think a BBall team like Louisville needs to do that but some assistant thought he'd show the guys a good time.   Everything about it was wrong...buying prostitiutes...giving the recruits money.  it was beyond moronic.  I don't think Pitino is that stupid and after his success he doesn't need to play that game.  If it was showing them a good time....sure....but handing recruits money...meh.
