All newverynewREALLYnew 49ers

Forums:

I waited until things were finalized and we heard these guys talk a little before posting anything.

It's hard to have hope after the way things have gone with the 49ers the past few years, but I'd say that these two hires are about as good or better than anything that could have been hoped for.

Like everyone else I scratched my head and thought "huh?" when they announced John Lynch as the new GM, but almost immediately I began to like it, and I like it a little more every day.

Shanahan was the guy I was hoping they'd get as HC, and while there's no way to know how he'll actually do and for sure there's going to be a learning curve and mistakes are going to be made, I love the way he runs an offense, I like the way he carries himself and I think while young he's been all the way around the NFL block and won't be blinded by the bright lights. I think considering how bad things have been with the 49ers organization lately they're damn lucky to get such a top HC prospect to sign on, and I think there's a good chance that he will develop into a successful NFL head coach.

Surprisingly though, I think Lynch could be the real score here. He's been hugely successful at everything he's ever done, every person from everywhere he's ever been raves about him, including many top NFL people like John Elway, and while highly intelligent and very confident in himself he KNOWS that he doesn't know everything and openly admits that, which to me is huge.

The thing that got my attention right away was how quickly he was able to hire the top personnel guy Adam Peters from Denver. That guy had a great job in Denver and by all accounts is a very highly regarded personnel professional and has been rising on the GM track for a while now, so even though it's a promotion he had no reason to leave such a good job with a top organization to go to an organization that has seemed to be in free-fall. But he did and he did it immediately after Lynch contacted him. I was impressed not only that Lynch knew right away who he wanted and had targeted a guy who seems to be exactly what Lynch needed, but also that he got the man he wanted right away.

To me that is a bit of a big deal and is a very good sign that Lynch not only understands what his job is but that good people respect him and want to work for him. In any profession good people want to work with good people, and good executives almost always get exactly who they want.

Now Lynch has hired Martin Mayhew, who has extensive experience (and some success) as an NFL GM and who is a good friend of Lynch's. He will serve as a consultant and help Lynch though the learning curve he knows he's on. Because they're friends there won't be any weird drama, splits or back-stabbing, and Mayhew won't be making the final decisions, so I like the sound of that as well.

As for Jed, neither Lynch nor Shanahan needed the jobs and neither are set up to be lead by their noses by Jed or his cronies; in fact it looks like they lead Jed around by his nose through this process. I think both of these guys are very confident professionals and won't take any BS from Jed, and it seems that Jed might finally understand that he needs to stay the hell out of things and let the professionals do their job. I don't think either one would have signed on with the 49ers if they didn't believe that Jed and the organization will follow their lead, which is a very good and an honestly surprising thing.

So, while I'm fairly surprised at how positive these hirings look right now at the start, considering how bad things have been the past three years I now feel that I am at best pre-cautiously hopeful. After we see how they handle this very important upcoming draft & FA period I'm hoping to move to pre-cautiously optimistic. Then after we see them play some games I'm hoping to begin moving toward being cautiously hopeful and then to cautiously optimistic. Even if they lose next year and even the year after, it's pretty easy to see well-coached teams and an organization on a single, correct track. Even with their lack of experience we'll have a fair idea pretty quickly if they're on the right track or not.

I also think there is more talent on the team now than people give them credit for. They have empty black holes at QB & WR, and their depth at every position except RB is nonexistent so they have a lot of talent they need to upgrade, but overall they don't need to add that many big-time impact players to start competing again and winning games. Unfortunately the impact players they do need are at the most difficult positions to fill, but at least there is reason now to pay attention to what they do and see what happens.

So now, what do they do with that #2 pick? It's a huge and incredibly important asset and they can't afford to fuck it up. Personally I like the sound of the QB Mitch Trubiski, but I don't think he or any of the QBs are worth that #2 slot, so if they get lucky and Cleveland doesn't take pass rush monster Myles Garrett they should jump on that, or maybe take the D-lineman Jonathan Allen who's supposed to be an absolute beast. Otherwise I think they should trade down to somewhere around #10 - #15 for more picks to maybe trade for a QB and still draft a top player a little lower in the round like WR Mike Williams or the D-lineman Solomon Thomas from Stanford.

As for free agency, they have tons of dough to spend, but in the NFL that usually ends in disaster, so I will be looking to see if they dump huge money on medium level players just to make a splash. That would be bad long-term and I don't think they're going to do that, but it will be interesting to see what happens. I would love to see them blow some major dough and take one big FA chance though, on Alshon Jeffery. He's still young and when healthy he's great, and even great WRs usually take two or three years to develop, so it would be great to fill a huge hole with a top veteran guy right away.

OK, so things have been a dumpster fire for the 49ers for a long time now, we don't know if the new guys will be able to straighten things out, and even if they're great it's going to take a while to get things right again, but at least now there's a real reason to hope that there might be some real hope.

GO NINERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

jeez dude.   too much to read here.

Yeah, it's a Newberry classic alright.

I was killing time and didn't go back and edit, shockingly something I try to do when I babble long like that, but not always so much when I'm in the sports folder.

Whatever, the 49ers have been a hot mess the past few years and there hasn't been much to talk about, except how bad everything got.

So now there's a lot to fix but maybe the fix is beginning, and maybe there could be a lot to talk about again.

GN!

It's only one page.

How did you get through school?

I still say get a GOOD defensive coordinator and start shoring up the defense , a must for winning in the NFL
Maybe they'll get lucky and nab a really good QB in the draft- or trade- hopefully no later than  next year.

School's highly over-rated.

And I agree about the defense, but as I must have said somewhere in all that jabber above, almost all their starters on defense are good to very good; it was the complete empty space behind the starters, especially at middle linebacker, that killed them last year after a few of the starters got hurt.

They've already gotten to work on that, signing a quality FA run stuffer who was also wanted by Denver, Seattle and Atlanta, three top teams who don't go for weak players. He will fit nicely in the Seattle-based defense they're going to play, playing over the center between the two good young defensive ends from Oregon.

There's a lot of chatter lately about them possibly taking the middle linebacker Reuben Foster from Alabama with the 2nd pick, who sounds like an absolute beast and would be a fine addition, taking the pressure off of Navaro Bowman to have to be back right away after tearing his Achilles last year, and if he does regain his form that would take care of a lot of the depth issues at that position.

The guy they hired to run the defense is someone who is a Gus Bradley disciple from Seattle and is well-versed in that style, which obviously has worked very well as long as it has the right type of players to fit the system, and the 49ers do have many of the pieces now that fit that system well, DBs particularly.

With another smart FA signing or two and a good draft, along with one or two players who were Baalke specials - hurt coming out of college so drafted lower than their talent - who reportedly are looking good and could be quality young players this year, the team could start competing again, even with a scrub at QB.

I don't think there's going to be any quick fixes at that position unless they get lucky, but filling in all the holes on the roster is going to take a couple of years at least so there's no great rush to reach for someone this year unless they really believe he can be a top player.

And at this point I think it's fair to give Shanahan the benefit of the doubt that he has a good eye for a top QB, either a veteran or a draft choice.

Great read Lance. Yeah Shanahan know was he's doing, I'd give him a shot.

Kaepernick needs a hair cut. He's probably going to go full John Riggins shave most of his hair and leave a Mohawk.

Two thumbs up for John Lynch, Kyle Shanahan and all the 49ers decision makers.

Two BIG thumbs up!

I love both picks, and I love how they got them. If either or both don't turn out they don't turn out, but both are primed to be impact NFL players. The draft is always a crap shoot, but either way the organization did all the right things today.

A good first real day on the job.

John Lynch, Kyle Shanahan and their team?

So far so good.

And they have two high 3rds, two 4ths, two 5ths, two 6ths and a 7th coming up, so they can keep dealing/adding.

Far out.

Ha!

I looked at this thread today for the first time in a long time and I see that I started it exactly one year ago, so I figure this is a fitting time to chime back in on the all newverynewREALLYnew 49ers.

Damn, everything is going really well.

It was funny to read today that manifesto I put up a year ago, seeing how it has all worked out so far.

>>>I now feel that I am at best pre-cautiously hopeful. Even with their lack of experience we'll have a fair idea pretty quickly if they're on the right track or not.<<<

One year later I think it's fair to say that the 49ers very much appear to be on "a single, correct track". Lynch & Shanahan are big-time plusses, doing just about everything right so far, and checking off all the boxes. They started without any QBs, WRs, CBs, offensive guards, pass rushers, overall depth, a defensive coordinator, etc. Then they nailed the draft, they nailed free agency, they NAILED the QB situation, the young dcoordinator did an excellent job his first year and appears to be a smart, top-quality performer.

When the season started and they were losing game after game the team continually played hard, endured a rash of injuries, lost close games and then got blasted a couple of times but they stayed together. Then with a few changes (including a dramatic improvement at QB) they surged at the end to win 6 of their last 7 games, going 5 - 0 in December beating playoff teams.

Even the ownership/front office is doing everything right now, signing the checks and staying the hell out of the way.

A year ago... "Black hole at QB" - They now have one of the most coveted young QBs in the league; brilliant natural skills & instincts, trained for three years by the best and ready to win right now. They also now have a really good backup QB; young, fearless and tough as nails, smart & dedicated as they come and a humble, total team player. Black hole completely filled.

"Black Hole at WR" - They now have three top-quality winning receivers, Pierre Garson, Marquise Goodwin & Trent Taylor, each with different qualities & strengths. With those three healthy and with the coaching & QB quality they now have the 49ers have enough at WR to win big games without adding anyone. The only thing they could really use is a tall, athletic reciever to win high sideline throws and lobs in the end zone, but the redzone help is something they may just cover by buying the FA red zone beast Jimmy Graham and using him along with George Kittle at TE. So at WR they can improve on that & their depth, but especially if they buy Graham they have what they NEED to win right now at WR, so that black hole is also mostly filled.

What they don't have right now to win big games is a top-quality interior Oline, a #1 conerback and a top-quality edge rusher/QB terrorist. That's at least three and probably four high end players needing to be added, so there is still significant work to be done.

But they have tons of cap space, lots of draft choices and a quality team of front office people with the brains and the resources to fill those holes, so 365 days later, after just watching a team that went 7-9 a year ago win the Super Bowl with a 2nd string QB, I have to say that I've gone from pre-cautiously hopeful and on past cautiously optimistic. I'm now simply optimistic and am really looking forward to next season.

With the re-hashed but seriously dynamic Jon Gruden back in Oakland, NFL football in the Bay Area should be pretty interesting in 2018. (And the 49ers & Raiders play each other next year, which is always fun).

Things are looking up for the 49ers faithful.

Far out.

GO NINERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I guess for no other reason than it's fun for me to re-visit this thread two & a half years after I started it, I'm re-visiting this thread, even if no one sees it.

Now we're in the third season of the change, and it's kind of damn fun to see that it's working out just about as well as I'd hoped.

Good players on the team already? Check. Good new player acquisitions? Check. Star acquisitions? Check. Coaching skill and depth? Check. Front office skill and success? Check.

>>>after we see them play some games I'm hoping to begin moving toward being cautiously hopeful and then to cautiously optimistic<<<

Right now I'm definitely optimistic, and this team is definitely GOOD!

7 - 0!!!

Only injuries or the greatness of another team can take this group down, three years after being the worst in the league.

(And Raiders fans are eating their liver, yet again)

FAR OUT!

This is fun.

GO NINERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
