Time for a new thread for you? It is for me unless someone objects.
The Australian Open is happening and there's a lot of tennis going on! It's hard to keep track of it, there's so much. It must look like a colony of ants from the air.
I was sorry that Naomi Osaka lost to Garcia; it was a reality check.
I have my same favorites... I'll be watching when I can. Good luck to everyone.

I'm enjoying Zverev vs Norrie, really liked Jim Courier's post-match interview with Medvedev. I like the Portugese player via Mississippi, Nunu Borges - no fear. Even though I really like Tsitsipas, I was impressed with Fritz's play, especially the end of the last set. There's a lot of great play!
I started watching the Rybakina / Blinkova tiebreak, the longest tiebreak ever - it is so long. So well played but I may not choose to watch the whole thing because there's so much live tennis on tv. I have to do other things around the Open hours.

Fritz looked great against Tsitsipas (knocking Steph out of the top 10), but Novak handled Taylor, going to 9-0 against him. Maybe next time?
Zverev / Norrie was really good. Vs Alcaraz tonight, we'll see. Carlos is looking sharp / strong. I don't know the Sinner / Rublev result yet, but Sinner appears in control.
Regarding commentators, we like James Blake a lot. And yes, that Medvedev interview was great! He's often a curmudgeon on court, but they say he's very funny in person.

And again, Sinner! I was sorry that today's Delray Beach final was rained out; Fritz vs Paul should be fun.
What do you make of the coaching merry-go-round (or is it roulette?)? I wonder if Rune will coach himself? He's divesting himself of pretty much everyone and of continuity. Life without mom at matches could be freeing or perhaps untethering in a difficult way. And Thiem, Pegula, and Sakkari. Thiem may retire, and the others?
I can't remember if I've brought this up: Tennis players, managers, broadcasters seem to view players and matches as entertainment. I haven't thought of them that way til recently, and now it's still not my thought but I'm thinking about it. My excitement watching tennis is more about geometry of shots, player's reactions to opponent's play, the physicality... but I didn't think that I was being entertained, I just marveled. Well, now I get that it is entertaining. Life is interesting.
See you at the courts.

Hi Judit,
Hi Judit,
We've been enjoying the clay court season (our favorite), and Tsitsipas and Zverev have been doing well. Jarry was very impressive in Rome in stopping Tsitsipas, but couldn't quite sustain that level through the finals, and we were happy to see Zverev get another 1000. On to Roland Garros! Really glad to see Sinner will be able to play, though I question whether he can pick up where he left off without more match play leading up. Enjoy the French Open! Here's hoping you have a great summer.

Well, that was a first round
Well, that was a first round match for the ages! Zverev was really sharp in the first set, and Rafa showed some rust. The match was much more competitive after that, with some very high level play from both players. Too bad both of them can't advance, though I do hope Zverev can take the whole thing. And as you noted, the speeches and crowd reaction at the end were special, more like following a final. Don't know if that was Nadal's last French Open, but he did say he hoped to return to that court for the Olympics. Also, Rafa and Alcaraz playing doubles for Spain would be something to see!
Tsitsipas looked good, also winning in straight sets, though he did need to overcome 2 set points in the first set. Sometimes a very few clutch points make all the difference, and Fucsovics kind of went away after that.
Very glad to see Sinner advance. Saw a few highlights, and he was making amazing shots, plus moving well. Hope his body holds up, hate to think of such a young athlete with a hip problem.

Hi Judit! Television and
Hi Judit! Television and streaming have gotten more complicated and diversified, it's a moving target, but I can pass on a few options we've found:
We get Tennis Channel from "cable" (ATT/Uverse channel 1660), which we record on DVR. We also found a new-to-us channel 1694, which may or may not be related to Bally Sports Network. Not sure how long that's been available, but my wife found it using "More Showtimes" for Tennis Channel at a time when 1694 just happened to have the same tournament scheduled. We also record this to DVR, just watched Tsitsipas / Arnaldi.
Also on "cable" sometimes ESPN carries a tournament, then they screw up by not honoring the posted schedule (another show runs long, or just no reason) and/or having an unannounced handoff to ESPN2. Hard to schedule a recording.
We get T2 via streaming and a new smart TV. At first that was only live (and not recordable), not so useful in the middle of the night. But now we've found that in addition to live-only options for T2 (HBO/Max, Prime, search for others?), there are replays at more convenient times via Samsung TV. Still not recordable, but sometimes we'll catch things that Tennis Channel missed or only showed in part.
Peacock may be a good call for Tennis during the Olympics. I see NBC only scheduled 3 hours today, just a tease for Peacock. Coming up, looks like 3 hours, 11am Thursday. 4 hours 11am Friday. 5 hours 6am Saturday. And 5 hours 6am Sunday.
We've considered TCPlus online streaming, which in addition to live should offer some on-demand (delayed?) matches. But they charge for a subscription ("every match!") then don't have one or more Grand Slams because some network covers them. So we gave up on them.
Crazy, right? I hope you're able to find new-to-you options. Good luck!

I watched the last couple of sets of Zverev v Rune this afternoon. Great play, great outcome. Why do you think Rune sneers so much of the time? (I've noticed that TV commercial fashion models sneer and almost never smile, too. Things I don't understand.)
Thank you for your great information about TV and streaming. I have cable, ESPN, and I have access to T2 on Prime through my son's account. That helps. And I do love Andrea Petkovic who seems to do commentary there. TC+ seems too expensive. My current TV is starting to pixilate, to have streaks where there was movement, usually, think how that would be in a tennis match. I have to get a new one. It's a 27" and those are hard to find in these modern days and I don't have anywhere for a larger one. I'd like a smart TV but it seems they don't make those in 27" models. Yes in 31", but nowhere to put one... I hope it'll come together just before this on dies.
Happy watching!

Couldn't finish Zverev/Rune
Couldn't finish Zverev/Rune until this morning. What a great clay court match! Big hitters, determined defenders, long rallies, skilled at the net. Lots of diverse, all-court tennis! I felt Zverev would be fine if he could force a 5th. We were so disappointed when he didn't serve out the 4th, and Rune had a sudden love-hold leading into the tiebreak. But, you know the result. I may seldom root for Rune, and my wife really dislikes his punky attitude and "twitchiness". But I am really entertained by his style of play. He was a shooting star beating top-5 players right from the start, not sure why he fell back to earth.
On to Tsitsipas/Alcaraz. Kind of surprised Stef has never beaten Carlos. Nothing against Alcaraz, another really entertaining player to watch, but we'll be pulling for Tsitsipas all the way. I hope he's not tired after playing doubles with his brother.

Had a realization based on a couple assumptions:
- Grass has never been our favorite surface, seems to favor bomber servers, lots of short, +1 points.
- Women's tennis was a step down from men's, even setting aside best-of-5 vs best-of-3.
The realization:
During grass season, women have more engaging rallies than the men. For example: the recent Coco vs Jabeur match, which sadly ended with Jabeur withdrawing after the first set, was very compelling grass court tennis. These women don't get tons of free points on serve (boring), they hit hard from the baseline, they have long rallies, and play all-court tennis.
Conclusion: We'll pay more attention to women's tennis during grass court season.

This tournament has had many matches where we like both players, wishing both could advance. In those cases, we tend to support the lower ranked player who "needs it more". My wife picked out Navarro last year, and we've enjoyed seeing her rise. We're also happy to see Badosa coming back from her back injury. But since they both can't advance, we really enjoyed how cool Navarro was. In the after-match interview, she described that when she held to get to 2-5 in the 2nd set, still down 2 breaks, she somehow could see herself taking the match in 2. Badosa had the power but ran hot and cold. Navarro played great defense and just stayed steady, whether ahead or behind. She credits her mother as the source of her ability to remain calm and manage pressure. Apparently Mom teaches a "mindful life" type program. Certainly has served Emma well. Tennis is such a mental sport!
