Dino from DSO

Forums:

i chatted with Vorty on Monday at a private show with barraco, JP, Nate, Zach Nugent on  a wolf and sunshine becker and dino english

barraco sang two souls in communion ( the stranger)  - i have been dying to hear = I WAS BLISSED he said he saw pig at his first show in NY , and they played an 11 minute version - and it floored him - he sang from memory. we also got a standing on the moon - the grateful guitars benefits at the GAMH the night before was epic - so much music -- three shows or more a week at my age is taxing - but i can't let the rail down

vorty had to spep away from the vitriol that was spewing at him many years ago................

50 people i n a backyard os sweet - Friday is California kind - talent on the way

I like to think we're a vitriol-free Zone he could step back into. Did you guys talk about that?

I'm glad that you're supporting the rail as often as you are.

We both spoke of you,  but I did not promote the health of the new zone and I rarely visit

That sounds like a really fun time!
Cool that you got 2 souls, DSO does it from time to time.
Dino and Rob are both very sweet & gracious people.
Zach Nugent has an amazing tone, but unfortunately he seems to be a total tool.

>>>>>Dino and Rob are both very sweet & gracious people.

I was fortunate enough to be invited to a pre-show dinner with some folks that included Utah Jen and Good Gunnar and those gents, and they were very nice and seemed down to earth.

>>>from the vitriol that was spewing at him

unfortunate.   But this is a very different place.   Not even sure if we can call ourselves assholes any more.

>>I was fortunate enough to be invited to a pre-show dinner with some folks

Same. Dino invited me out to a pre-show dinner with Rob Baracco and a few others in 2014 on my birthday. It was a nice time. Hope you are well, Dino. Thanks for getting us into the show.

A cover band playing another bands music and you feel lucky to be invited backstage?surprise

And there is the old zone spirit.

Sorry if i'm not a big fan of cover bands.

Doolittle, when was the last time you went to a show? You post about going to some shows in the 80s, but nothing recent as far as I can tell.

A cover band show?

Never!

Any show then.

Friday is California kind - talent on the way

It's Saturday

Sunday.

Vorty is the Tops!

Sunday.

I can't make that one, have a conflict

Cover band, all original or some sort of mix, as long as they do a good job and play with their souls, it's a wonderful thing. As for backstage, the fun is based on the people there, not what transpires on stage. Perhaps I'm just addicted to live performance, and if that's so, I'm completely ok with that.

I agree, Dino and Rob are very sweet people. I've gotten together with them, or more often Dino, when DSO comes to Eugene. I like them as people, and also as musicians.

Right on, Tony.

doolittle, a couple of things. When you live in a place like Eugene where there are lots of people who know each other and know the music, getting together to hear DSO is a good social gathering as well as the chance to hear good live music. For me it's not that they're covering GD music, it's that a bunch of people can have a good time as a group listening to live music.

On a side note, GD played covers, Rolling Stones play covers, lots of bands have played covers. To me, nothing wrong with playing covers.

I'm happy that you have good memories of the shows you went to.

Damn, you cover band fans can't get your show days straight!

And not caring for "cover bands" is a fair and valid attitude, but I will say this about bands that play Grateful Dead music; because GD music is inherently improvisational, so must the cover band be improvisational, and that makes every show a product of the individuals performing, and whether the musicians consciously try to sound like the original players or not (some do, many don't) since they're improvising in the moment the music is always coming from their ideas, their intuition, in that moment.

Some of the players & bands are very good at sounding like the Grateful Dead, but they're not good at individual and group improvisation so the music goes nowhere and is quickly boring (or worse) while others may or not sound like the originals but are excellent improvisers, and the music goes to interesting places that are unique to those players.

So while the songs and structure might be "covered" and the technical style of the original players might be closely emulated by the new players, the improvised music being played is by definition always original.

so, doolittle has never seen a gd cover band?

i guess there's always your maxell II's...

Not on purpose. And would never pay to see one. If you all like them that's great. Different strokes...

Just a point of order. Phil & Friends is a cover band.

^Really!?

How do you figure?

He played most of his music. Because he added some outside runes to his repertoire makes him a cover band? Don;t agree!

Then Bob Dylan and GD many others who play other peoples songs are cover bands?

Not imo! A band that only plays other peoples music is a cover band. If DSO has their own music and plays it I'm not aware ot it.

I guess you didn't read this!

Not imo! A band that ONLY plays other peoples music is a cover band

^Really!?

How do you figure?

He played most of his music. Because he added some outside runes to his repertoire makes him a cover band? Don;t agree!

It's actually quite simple. Most of the songs Phil & Friends play are Grateful Dead songs. While Phil was a member of the Grateful Dead, Phil & Friends is NOT the Grateful Dead. Dead & Co. is NOT the Grateful Dead. They are something else. They cover GD songs but aren't the GD. Semantics? Perhaps. YMMV.

You still haven't mentioned any shows you've been to recently, Doolittle. If you're going to monopolize a thread about live music, you should at least answer questions when they're asked of you.

Monopolize a thread!?laugh

Just getting my point across,

As far as latest shows. What's it to you??

None in decades then. That's what I figured.

You talk a good game though.

He really doesn't.

And in this ultimately foolish conversation about what constitutes a cover band, a case can easily be made that all Phil & Friends groups have been cover bands because while it's true that Phil was in the Grateful Dead he wrote virtually none of the music, so everything his own bands have played except the two or three songs that Phil wrote are all Jerry, Bob or other people's songs. Thus, a cover band.

Anyway, for people who really just care about the actual music being played it doesn't really matter who's playing it but only how good it is, and the people who get all wrapped up in the pros & cons of cover bands have an agenda that has nothing to do with the music being played, and this thread was originally about music that was actually played and enjoyed.

What a concept.

I'm pretty sure DSO has originals   They may be few and far between but if that is the defining argument then I'm not sure it's a strong one

is a jazz group that only plays jazz standards a cover band?

Or pretty much any live classical music they are all hard core cover musicians.

DO NOTHING

No loves listening to himself type obviously
It's sad that you don't enjoy live music and I apologize for listing the wrong day. My calendar is just so jammed with concerts of musicians kicking ass.
people are dying to have something to argue about. I think Dead and Company is pretty piss, poor, even though I enjoyed seeing them three days in a row in San Francisco.

Lance is still eloquent and I am still jamming Joel even as my body ages

Sorry Joel that you insult someone that doesn't like what you like. Pretty juvenile IMO. And I like D&C. They at least are not a cover band.

Music eith makes you tap you foot or it doesn't. It's that simple.

Juvenile at least you got a three syllable word in there buddy

and I do feel sorry for you no need to elaborate

Dead and company whatever dude

Dino , if you see this hat's off pal!

> He really doesn't.

Of course he doesn't. Doolittle doesn't go to shows; he just disparages people who do.

Mikee with the trolling nonsense again. Maybe one day you'll get it right.with no help from me.

Joel no comment. Enjoy your shows!

Gents, turn off the harassment, please. You turned it on, now turn it off.

Keep it about the topic, not the Zoners. Thank you.

>>> Music either makes you tap you foot or it doesn't. It's that simple. <<<

Not quite. After Greg died I couldn't go to live music; it opened me up, went straight to my heart, was too much. It took a couple of years before I could just feel it (and tap my toes). I was listening to albums, tapes and CDs at home, dancing through the time, but live music did something different.
I'm back to some live music, but almost never big shows with crowds. Not fun for me.

I do encourage you to see whatever the music of your choice is, no matter what it is. Foot moving, toe tapping, get it where you can. And spend time with sweet musician friends when you can. Live life!

Judit (oh geez gad) my comment was in reference to the cover band vs. non cover band aspect of the conversation, not attending at live shows. Apologies for any confusion. There are a lot of factors that dictate whether or not one likes to attend live concerts.

I got it, Woz. Thanks. But sometimes life is more complicated than we expect, and I'm a dancer who loves music so that's where I'm coming from.

I don't see the difference between going to dance to (or see/hear) a cover band and someone doing all original music. As is said, "To each his peach". And as people get older, retire, die, a lot of it's going to be covers.

I'm glad you've moved on some judit and love music it's always a pleasure being with you

d&c isn't a cover band?????????????

No D&C have 3 members. Why are they a cover band??????????

3 members? Mickey, Bobby and? Sorry, I can't remember.

Are the former GD guys covering John Mayer's songs?

Came in to say that if Bearly Dead comes your way, check them out. They're high energy, really fun, and even shred on tunes like Corrina and Picasso Moon.

I love the songs of the Grateful Dead and thoroughly enjoy hearing them played well by other folks.

Hope all you Zoners are doing well.

Don't understand your post Judit. What are you trying to say?

Hi BK.

doolittle, > 3 members? Mickey, Bobby and? < I only remember 2, not 3.

And, less importantly, aren't they all covering the other band member's songs? It's not called Mayer and Co., though I guess organizationally/financially it is - so it seems like one big morass of covering.

His pants are down, his cover blown.

Hi Mikee! What took you so long??? Still trying to gaslight me with your nonsense.

You forgot Billy who obviously wasn't there on the last tour but but was there on all others.

Do you consider Furthur a cover band?

To me they're just a band with not all of the original players!

A cover band to me is a band that plays other peoples music but never wrote any of those songs. Yes Jerry Band  played lot's of covers but a lot were his tunes.

So almost every band was a cover band

The GD

The Stones and so many others.

Just because you add other peoples music to your repertoire doesn't make you a cover band IMO. Your just covering other peoples songs.  As long as most are yours.

I liked futhur, i like jazz sabbath, love dweezil's band.

Bound to cover just a little more ground.

Jumpin Joel. So good to see you back in action.  Great picture of you in SF Gate.  Looking good.

Hi Mike, I haven't seen you in a long time which is unusual

Barsco  played with Moonalice at the Oakland A's Jerry Garcia night last night

all in all it was a pretty solid performance, and he chatted about how DSL played two souls many times when they were covering Europe 72 concerts

Dino is a kind, funny, generous person, and a talented musician.  Never have been to a DSO show where they didn't bring the goods.  They're all aces!

I think you mean:  Rob Barraco.  Stu Allen played also.  S w e e t !

I don't see the difference between going to dance to (or see/hear) a cover band and someone doing all original music. As is said, "To each his peach". And as people get older, retire, die, a lot of it's going to be covers.

I totally agree, what ever makes one happy!

"and even shred on tunes like Corrina and Picasso Moon"

Might be the 2 worst GD songs ever.

took me a while to warm up to Corinna but Picasso Moon I liked out of the gate (it had crunch and was a nice respite from Bucket)

I'll put Push Comes to Shove on the top of the list for worst songs in the 80's

the 90's are a different story

Think I saw Splintered Sunlight do a ample cover of Corinna......

Brent vs Bobby. We have opposing views looks like.   I liked Push Comes To Shove. And most everything Brent. Never really been a Bobby fan. He had some great songs though. Like Sugar Mag.  Rooster. Looks Like Rain. Others.

Go ahead Tom. Time to slam me again.

Push was a Jerry tune,

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Q2CjYRknAI

I love all things Brent!

Except there are versions of Don't Need Love that don't soar

Just sayin" Rooster was not a Bobby song but I'm sure you know that.

I like Bobby most of the time. Added a spark to the perfomances with some tantric visual action which at times was a little over the top and embarrassing. The whole band up there just plucking away with barely moving would be stagnant

Yeah. Brain fart.  For some reason Push came up in my feeble brain as a Brent tune.

Bobby sang Rooster. That is all I meant. In the context of the GD, Rooster was a "Bobby song".

Samba In The Rain was the worst.

I was never real fond of Walk in the Sunshine too.

Neither was Barlowsmiley

Dino has Always been a stand up guy and very generous about Guest list and backstage entry...  Thanks Buddy!!!   Hope to see ya soon...
