Police: Man who climbed Sphere caused $100,000 in damage

"According to a police report, LVMPD patrol officers received multiple calls reporting a suspicious person seen climbing the exterior of the Sphere at 10:11 a.m. on Wednesday. Officers arrived on the scene, confirmed that the suspect was on the building, and coordinated with Sphere staff to get to the top to get the man down safely before anyone was injured. Officers made contact with the suspect, Maison Des Champs, on the roof of the Sphere. He was secured, detained, and taken down through the interior of the Sphere to a patrol car"

Local concert venue sent out an e-mail today offering free tickets to a live stream of night one. Twist my arm. OK, that's enough!

i have lower section 405 for night 2 , a friend saw U2 in similar seats and said the experience was amazing, i saw some video, pretty fucking trippy....

doing it hardcore, flying in Friday PM, show and red eye home after, back to the east coast

tsa, on what ever im coming down from, will be fun

I sat in 310 three rows from the rail. Other than obstructed view, which many of those are great views of the band but not the whole wall of visual experience, every seat is great and the sound is personalized for your seat no matter where you are.

3.5 hour show. I went to a 300 capacity concert venue in SLC. Maybe 120 people there for the free simulcast. I left at 11 before the second set started. Others did too, some before the end of the second set. Probably a few just wanting to see the inside of the Sphere.

Can't say I was too impressed by the visuals in set one but looking at the pics in this link, second set visuals look pretty cool. Phish fans sure loved it. I look forward to hearing from a buddy there for Saturday and Sunday.

Looks more like a head nodder show than a dance freak out

From my reading of reviews on Reddit people who were there mostly loved the visuals except for the cars, and people who streamed it thought it all looked like a screen saver. There were some problems with the sound but that got dialed in for most of the crowd and they did do some swirl effects that U2 didn't even attempt. Obstructed view was also obstructed sound which is what I suspected, and people in the the 400's way to the sides said there were problems as well. Also some complaints about bass which was pretty non existent for U2 as well. I have a feeling those directional speakers can't do booming bass but we will see.

These are training wheels shows. It will only get better. Except for the U2 sound guy no one has any experience running a 100,000+ speaker directional sound system. It's going to take some time to dial in.

We watched the first set last night.   Visuals were nice, but frankly I was expecting something a little more in time with the music.   Each song had a visual "theme" throughout but the great thing about Phish is how CK manipulates the lights on the fly with the music and is sort of a fifth member of the band.  That spontaneity was missing last night (at the least the one set we saw).   Glad I didn't pay a king's ransom to get tickets (plus it conflicts with the Billy Strings 4/20 run).

i def expected some kind of more intricate psychedelic visuals that could be manipulated in real time along with the improvisations. maybe thats to high an expectation, but idk, it doesnt feel like its that far out.

id like to hope for something better from deadco, but im guessing the visuals will be pretty similar to what we saw last night, but with additional lightning bolts, SYF's, dancing bears, berthas and roses.

im sure it would have been a lot more impressive in person, but still, i dont need to be there in person to tell that my primary expectation was not met - no seriously psychedelic visuals, nothing coordinated with the improvisations.

I wasn't overly impressed from the webcast and actually thought The Sphere suited U2 more than Phish, even though they sort of followed the same visual formats, but it might have been a different story had I been there. I think it will be a few years before it reaches its full potential.

FWIW, everyone I know that attended said their minds were totally blown by the experience and that it was well beyond their expectations.

conclusion: for (what I think are) obvious reasons it doesn't translate to a flat screen TV webcast....

Thanks so much for the input. I was told it mostly doesn't matter but curious.

Getting a report from my sister, brother after tomorrow's show.

Thanks Alan R. for the Escher-had that in my dormroom in the 80's and there was an Escher exhibit in Israle in 82 and scored a grest poster!!!

a friend sent a couple of pics from last night's Phish show 4-19

^there is a section of that interview that really beautifully sums up the perception the masses have of groups like the dead and phish, and whats really going over their heads -

trey - "one  of the things we always try to do is...have free form jams within the composed music that goes beyond the bar line, and beyond scales, to a place where its a little bit more like pure energy, that's sort of the goal."

reporter - "a normal phish show is different every night right?"

LMAO

Also talks about the benefit of staying under the radar and not achieving "fame". I only saw a little but figured some folks might want to see it and his talking about the Sphere.

Those visuals from last night sure beat the ones from Thursday.

Yes, visually Friday was superior to Thursday - but if the loose nightly themes are: earth, water, air, fire, (with last night being water) then they were right in their element.

Saw one review of a person who sat in the 100's night one and the 300's night 2. He said 100's the sound was better and the 300's the visuals were better but the sound would get muddy sometimes. Phish is pushing the envelope on the sound way more than U2 and still dialing it in.

Phish has brought it to a whole new level, and their music is perfectly suited for the Sphere. I think Dead Co will have a harder time because so many of the songs are very literal story telling songs. I mean Help Slip Frank DS drums space wheel will be fine, but Jack Straw, US Blues, all the cowboy songs, Althea, Deal, Peggy O will be more difficult to do.

Anyway killer videos from the crowd last night.

Yeah Zooey, that's the segment I saw that led me to find the full interview at the link I posted above. Check it out.

And I heard something similar El Nino. That U2 kept the sound a little more raw for their rock show but Phish and Trey were real interested in dialing all that in and making full use of the capabilities there. That should help pave the way a bit for Dead and Co.

Also some complaints about bass which was pretty non existent for U2 as well. <<

Tradition?  I saw U2 in '84.  Meh.  Sounded like a giant AM radio.

I pictured the Wall of Sound with a few dials on it.

What's with the Dead & Co at the Sphere hate? : r/jambands

Yes. In New York.

def sit tho, because ***haptic***

Section 403 was very good. Had an awesome time. Epic 2001.

there is a moderate amount of discussion on the phish subreddit regarding reports from the U2 shows that the venue can cause vertigo, is very steep, and can be disorienting/overwhelming, and by far the majority consensus over there seems to be that these concerns were overblown, most people had no issues like this, and while parts of the venue are steep, it wasnt really much different from other slightly steep venues all over the country. several folks who chimed in and had no problems also mentioned using psychedelics, so even in that state, most people seem to be navigating the venue normally.

i was pretty curious about this issue leading up to the phish/dead shows, considering what generally goes down in the stands and the crowd these bands attract vs U2, but it seems like most are not having issues.

im not going to be going to any of the d&c shows, but i am watching the venue with interest and would really like to see a show there in the near future. i'd make the effort to do the theoretical next d&c or phish run there, but im most interested in seeing tool play the sphere.

Tool would be great. Really disappointed that The Eagles are up next. They have no reason to play in The Sphere.

Saw one other interesting comment that said the sound was designed to work best for people sitting not standing. Apparently Phish was using the haptics on the seats for the bass. U2 didn't use that feature either.

It's not too step, and pretty much everyone who said so hadn't gone to a show there,  and 98% of the seats leave you with a great experience. Phish set the bar high for anyone else who follows.

I am so excited to see what D&C will do with the place. Weir has experience with 3D sound from the Tamalpais  Research Institute Meyer Constellation setup, I hope he has input into the sound design aspects. That said, drums and space are made for this place and the other way around too. We have all experienced 3D visuals, I'm betting 3D sound is going to blow us away!

>>>i def expected some kind of more intricate psychedelic visuals that could be manipulated in real time along with the improvisation

>>> wasn't overly impressed from the webcast and actually thought The Sphere suited U2 more than Phish

Agreed with both comments - While cool, just seemed like a giant screensaver and I was back in my college dorm.   Don't feel like I missed out.

With regard to seat location it does seem to get the full visual effect the higher the better - truer words never spoken.  The flyby Phish cam in the professional videos give you a good sense of how things look.

what happened to bobby's studio thing?

webiste's all stale

 http://www.tristudios.com/about

Improv on the screen would be nice but we are years away from that. The technology in it's current state does not exist to do real time improv with a screen that size and that level of resolution. Also very different experience sitting in a room where a 250 foot screen surrounds you and watching it on a 56 inch monitor. Kind of like watching a video of people on a roller coaster and being on a roller coaster.

U2 ran the sound system as mono and didn't push the capabilities at all. Phish pushed the capabilities. For instance when the cars were driving around the screen they had different instruments coming from different cars as they drove around the screen. From what I read that didn't always work  depending on where you were sitting but from all accounts it got much better by N4.

Don't know who does sound for Dead Co. I wasn't impressed with the show I saw at all in SF. Since the whole Dead Co business side is run out Mayers company I wouldn't be surprised if the sound is coming from him to. Hopefully they will step up. I'm happy I won't be going until mid June. Dead Co has never been particularly good out of the gate.

I was there for the first 2 nights of Phish (got lucky on TM) and the sound quality and visuals were absolutely incomparable with anything I've ever experienced.

IMO, having opinions based on the stream is on par with people who judged the good ole grateful dead based on 70's television recording/viewing technology.

There is just no way a small screen/sound system can come close to conveying what that fucking enormous screen and that wall of sound with its thousands of speakers does.

Regular concerts are now going to always seem less impressive by comparison and I just hope more bands that I want to see play the Sphere... even without the visuals, the sound quality alone makes the short flight well worth it.

GTTS[shere]!

FWIW, we were front row of 305 night one, and front row of 408 the second.  I would not have wanted to be any closer than 300's, and I would also not have wanted to be any further to the side than 408s...

Thanks for all the helpful comments!!

People on phish.net were commenting on their 'obstructed view' seats. Consensus was, although the sound was decent and you could see the band well and a bit of the screen, it was overall a frustrating experience, while everyone else is looking up, going "ooh...ahhh...wow man...", they were looking at a black overhang. Very poor design. Better than not getting in? You decide.

Better than not getting in? You decide.

if i was doing a 3 or 4 night run for phish or some kind of dead band and i had to take these seats for one of the nights, id take it and deal, and just write off that night as a chill night to avoid drugs, take it easy and get to bed early so i can more comfortably rage it the other nights.

if i was going to see a band that does not improvise for one night and these seats were all i could get, id 100% skip it. like even tho seeing tool here is my number 1 wish for this venue, if i had to sit there i would not make the effort to go.

wide angle shot from section 408.  The screen went completely over my head and around me on the side, so it felt like I was diving.

SmallPhishOceanScene.jpg

super trippy 'fire eye'

SmallPhishEye.jpg

two wide angle (24mm) shots of the same sequence, neither of which captures the full width or height of the place (and of course the shit on the screen is moving, so the experience is kinda like being inside a kaleidoscope)

Thanks for those photos Googly. Pretty cool.

Most importantly, were there lines for the bathrooms (wouldn't want to miss much of a show) and was standing up and dancing possible anywhere? Aisles clear? Could you light up?

Or was it an ingest and sit there only experience?

i've got two questions, what time did the shoes end ?

and what was the getting out like ??

Atta' boy Hall, good boots-on-the-ground reporting.

>>>the sound quality alone makes the short flight well worth it<<<

That's the only question I have about the place. I'm sure the visuals are fine and amazing and everyone goes "OOOOOOH! AAAAAAHHHHHH!" every 30 seconds, but for me personally all that shit (and a lot less than what's happening in that place) is usually superfluous and just distracting.

I get that especially these days people love shiny baubles and flashy lights, but for me concerts are about the music, and it's my impression that no matter how good the music may be at the Sphere, for most people the music is always going to be secondary, the soundtrack to the main event, and to that I say meh.

However, if the sound is brilliant there then I may end up giving the place a chance, because it will be easy for me to do what I usually do, pull my hat down over my eyes and fully experience the music with a much more natural "light show" than anything that's been pre-programed weeks earlier by a bunch of technicians.

But that's just me.

What they should do and what will probably start happening sooner than later is have no live band, charge half as much, blast recordings of past live shows and everyone will go, "OOOOOOH! AAAAAAHHHHHH!" without even noticing that there is no live band. Honestly, how many people wouldn't have noticed if U2 or Phish weren't actually on stage so far???

Either way, good on you Googly for going to the show and giving us a first-hand account.

Sorry i missed you Hall! How fun was that?

Tom-  Shows ended 12:15- 12:30 each nite. Had 30-45 minute set breaks. The bathroom lines were sometimes long but other times non-existent, depending on your timing, but i found it easy to time.  The steepness of the seating was similar to the Greek or the Chase center so not really an issue. The escalator ride was a little sketchy feeling though, since they're kind of floating out in space and a long way down. All in all the experience was awesome, the sound was very good and super stereo and the band really brought it.  I heard the entry from the Venitian was long and stuffy in the enclosed walkway, so we took a taxi to main entrance... it was a long line but was organized and moved fast. Definitely going again for the next round .

What hotels are best for Sphere shows?  Walkable? That usedto be a little skechy area.

The Venetian/Palazzo are connected to the Sphere. You don't even have to go outside to get in.  I had the amazing fortune of staying in the Palazzo for the Phish run, we had a great room with an incredible sphere view.  It's pricey but nothing is cheap in LV anymore.  Sat in section 309 for all 4 nights and it was perfect.  Perhaps a little more centered could have been better but I doubt it.  I wouldn't spend more $$ for a lower section.  Seats are small but mostly stood and danced.  The haptics in the seats were pretty awesome (think subwoofer) so it was cool to sit for a bit.  We liked the sphere so much we went to see Postcards from Earth on day 5.  Obviously a different vibe , it was funny seeing older folks negotiate the stairs like they were using the cables on Half Dome!  The tech in the sphere was really cool.  I loved that they can make it windy in there.  An interesting technology was the sound canceling hallway.  You step 2 feet out to go get a beer and the sound is gone, weird, and it's loud in there.  I'm peeing next to a guy and he says "the tech is cool but I'd love to be hearing the band"!  The Palazzo is full of great and pricey restaurants but we found that the Grand Lux cafe was perfect for breakfast and post show late night munchies.  It's tucked away enough so that it didn't get overrun with people post show.  Best chicken and waffles I've ever had

Great Info KB, THANKS

What would be the best choice of accelerant to imbibe for the experience?

If I was going I'd definitely sit in the northern hemi...

Excellent Choice Tom
