Heading to the Big Island on Sunday

Forums:

My wife and I are finally getting a much need vacation. We're spending 12 days on the big island. 7 days on the west side and 5 more near Hilo. Looking for suggestions off the beaten path. The beaten path is pretty well-covered.

I'd describe physical shape as late 50's with medium stamina. Altitude should work in our favor as we're coming from Colorado.

Just making a long list of stuff and see where the adventure takes us.

When I was on the Big Island in 2015 for the DNB shows, I spent a week there.  I was based in Kilhaui-Kona, and every morning I'd get rolling to check out another part of the island.  These treks included visits to the southernmost point of the island, Captain Cook, Waimea Valley on the North Shore, the summit of Mauna Kea, Hilo, and the Volcano.  Wish I'd budgeted more time for hiking in Waimea Valley and for the Volcano Park.  There was also a cool town up on the high part of the island that seemed more like some Western movie cow town that I would have liked to check out more.  I completely missed Pahoa and the Southeast part of the island, and hope to get back to check it out someday.  Every day brought a new adventure, and I would wrap up most of my days there with brews and grub at the Kona Brewing Company.

Have a blast!

My favorite thing to do on big island is find a nice bag and go watch ocean life in hawi or somewhere out on the hamakua coast

royal Kona resort is recommended if you want to splurge. Hilo reeds bay is cheap and clean if you are on a budget.

if you are a coffee lover, you will probably learn something new and different on every farm tour

get the book called "Hawaii uncovered" unleashed, unrestrained... something like that. Worth its weight in gold.

if you rent a car, refrain from using its horn

Hilo town is a really underrated place. A jewel, actually. Just gotta poke around.

go see Makaha sons

Pepe'ekeo Scenic Drive north of Hilo is pretty cool.

Also check out Waipi'o Valley, South Point, and Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park.

For beaches, you can't beat Beach 69 just south of Hapuna Beach along Waialea Bay.  Great snorkeling right off shore and best of all, shade!

For beer, Big Island Brewhaus in Waimea is great.   Also like Hilo Brewing located in a industrial park in Hilo.  No food though.

Get yourself a copy of the most recent edition of 'Big Island Revealed' - we found the best tips in there. And be sure and put a custom book cover on it, as the locals* don't appreciate us tourists discovering their hidden gems.

*the real locals with roots on the island are super kind, the people who moved there 20 years ago not so much. South Park nailed it
