Hot

Forums:

Eight in the morning and already 84 outside, on the way to 106.

I don't think thermometers in W. Oregon even read temps over 100. smiley

We don't have central AC, just a couple of room units. It was 82 in the house when I went to bed and 76 this AM.

Should start to cool off a bit tomorrow - maybe get back to double digits.

I know these high temps are normal for many parts of the US, especially this year, but we're not used to it.

Business is going to be very good for those portable room AC units for the next 50 years. Starting an HVAC company in places that don't normally need AC would be a very smart business decision right about now. Friends who live in Vienna Austria recently got AC in their house. I grew up in Germany in the 60's and early 70's and we would get the equivalent of a snow day if it hit 89 degrees. Everything would shut down.

These days I'm just thankful whenever it stays under a 105 in my area.

GLOBAL WARMING?

"Oh, no, it couldn't be. Humans can't influence the weather!"

It's strange how much warmer Western Oregon gets than Western Washington.  We are "only" forecast to hit 87 each of the next three before the cool down begins.  Hopefully, this should be the last big blast of high temps this Summer.

we fucked up the planet

now we find out

> It was 82 in the house when I went to bed and 76 this AM.

Hot during the day is one thing, but when it doesn't cool down sufficiently overnight, that is truly hell.

The original forecasts for today in Eugene (Western Oregon) were for 108-110. Now the high is supposed to be 105-108˚.

There are now fires close by causing a rain of fine ash. The sun was red this morning, now it's yellow/grey through the haze of smoke and ash.

We're in a cocoon of grey heat. When I went out to check plants and do a little watering I wore my N95 mask. Smoke, ash and my lungs don't mix well.

I've had my new heating/cooling ductless heat pump system for 2 weeks - I'm enjoying the coolth.

Stay safe and as comfortable as you can be.

Edit: I looked up the highest temp recorded in Eugene - it was 111˚ in June, 2021.

Sucks.  Spent all last week in a heat wave down in Florida with temps breaking 100 degrees each day (and it wasn't a "dry heat") only to return to this record breaking nonsense.   Going to MMJ at the Edgefield tomorrow and its going to be a hot one.   Will bring the mister bottles for sure.

>>>>my new heating/cooling ductless heat pump system for 2 weeks

Good deal.  All we have is a portable unit (with the hose you stick in the widow) in our upstairs bedroom.

>>> All we have is a portable unit (with the hose you stick in the widow)

How's she feeling about that, Ken? Sorry, I can't help myself.

That a girl, Judit. Knew ya still had it in ya! Smoke, heat, yellow jackets. Fuck.

Don't get me started on the yellow jackets. The cats leave the remnants of a small dead creature in the driveway in the early morning and by the time I see it it's already covered with wasps. Gotta wait 'til after midnight to shovel it off into the woods to avoid an attack.

Eugene has not only very bad smoke today, but also smog! High ozone levels. The official air quality reading in my neighborhood was 292 at 10:00, very unhealthy. They're asking people to stay home, not drive (smog)... summer, fire season, but I don't remember smog named as such. My daughter-in-law delivers packages for 10-14 hours a day - she's out there in it and I hope she's wearing a mask or 2.

Hope I don't jinx anything but I've seen very few stinging insects this year in comparison to other years. But the pears haven't started falling off the tree to rot yet, that's when it gets the worst.

Good luck, all.

Air reeks of smoke in Corvallis this morning,  Eugene getting hit the worst!

So Noodler, which do you think is the "best", most frequently updated, easy to use, site for air quality?

The reading nearby seems to be 351, hazardous, but that was 30 minutes ago.

I honestly haven't done any comprehensive reviews of air quality sites (it's so rarely an issue in our parts)...    so i'm taking a similar approach with weather;

The government actually can be our friend.  I prefer weather.gov to the weather channel (.com), accuweather, etc (they all just rehash the gov info anyway).

So with that in mind;

https://www.airnow.gov/aqi/

There's a decent map under the "fires" menu option

airnow.gov is my go to for air quality readings, but they're only posted shortly after the hour. It's probably better that way since I might check frequently.

Thanks.

Wow. Those air quality numbers are quite elevated up & over there. Stay safe and hope it clears up soon.

The CO levels (as seen in screenshot below) and other 'layers' can be selected/interacted with @ https://www.windy.com

That's pretty standard Judit (hourly updates).  I know how to find various real time sites for weather, but haven't found any real time air quality sites.

Real time weather data

Thanks again, gents.

It's 100˚ but air quality is better at ~300. Can see a lot more detail on the trees a block away.

Single digits here. But w have had some of the cleanest air n the country for many yrs except when there is a fire nearby. Used to claim the cleanest air in the country.

And only 105 here today.

As far as weather projections, anybody know why all of them under-report/predict the temp every day?  My temp here is consistently 3-9 degrees hotter that they report/predict.

> Real time weather data

Thanks for the link, Noodler. I use NOAA for forecasts, but didn't know about their real time service.

Real time on the ground data = 101 at the Edgefield for MMJ.  Can't remember being at a show hotter than this since Vegas 92.  Dead and Co. at the Gorge was "only" 98.

https://aqicn.org/station/united-states-of-america/corvallis/sports-perf...

I use this. Forecast up to 5 days out in 3 hour chunks, as well as current conditions. This one is for Corvallis but you can change to your own location.

Windy's air pollution 5 day future movie is good too.

Spoke too soon. Got to 108 here today.  Predicted to be 102 on multiple weather sites.

Our electric company, EWEB, has a large backup generator up in the mountains that they've had to shut down. We got "A call to voluntarily conserve energy" through Wednesday. I think it will be extended through tomorrow.. Part of what it said was,
EWEB typically buys power at around $30-50 per megawatt hour. But the utility is seeing prices of $1,000-$1,700 per megawatt hour at peak times.
Several regional generators in the northwest have been shut down due to wildfire conditions, including EWEB’s Carmen-Smith hydroelectric facility on the McKenzie River, which has been impacted by the Lookout Fire.

Still hot, still smokey and smoggy, still oppressive. Hard times for a lot of people.

Stay safe, everyone.

Sorry to hear that -  just the worst combination when you can't open the windows because of the smoke and you can't run AC. Hope you get some favorable wind shifts soon.

scratch retiring to oregon...

hoping you guys get some relief.

104 today at the Portland airport.  New record.

Fucking sucks.   91 inside the house.  Kind of puts a damper on things.

I've got a 2nd floor apt in a 120 year old farm home, it bakes almost as much as I do, even with the new small window AC...

Today's high forecast to be only 88 - may go down below 50 Fri. night.

Now it will be someone else's turn.

yesterdays heat index at 2 pm was 121. That's hot even by our standards.

Then the cool cool rains came till 9 pm

We will do it again today, so buckle up kids

73 in Salem this morning - much nicer. Air quality has improved- some clouds.  Let's keep it that way.

Bobby talked about hearing Thick Air.

for the past three weeks the air is so thick here you can chew it.

Hope you folks up north get some sweet relief soon.

110 here yesterday. Was still in the 80's when I went to bed @4AM.  Supposed to cool off starting tomorrow.  105 so far today.

Nice and cool in my house though. AC set to 78 and ceiling fans.   And because of my solar, pg&e owes me.

Hope that you all up north that aren't used to this get some real relief soon.

Today is much better. Air quality is Moderate (70's), which is breathable even without a mask for me. Temp around 90˚. Tomorrow even better.

They had predicted light rain for an hour or two for late morning today but it never happened.
