Hung Jury in Walter Scott murder trial

Forums:

Unbelievable.   At least one juror found the officer's actions justifiable.    You may recall this was the incident in South Carolina where a police officer was caught on film shooting a guy running away five times in the back.   The video also shows the officer then calmly placing his Tazer next to the guy's body in an obvious attempt to stage the scene.

The single holdout reportedly told Newman: “I still cannot, without a reasonable doubt, convict the defendant. At the same time, my heart does not want to have to tell the Scott family that the man who killed their son, brother and father is innocent. But with the choices, I cannot and will not change my mind.”

I really wish I could hear what the reasonable doubt is.

I obviously don't know all of the details, but I'm adding this one to the growing list of WTF court cases...

It shouldn't be a surprise. If you are a cop and you shoot someone you are more than likely not going to be punished for it.

Since 2005 there have been 13 cops convicted of murder or manslaughter in fatal on-duty shootings.

The average number of people fatally shot by police each year...1000.

You do the math.

Unbelievable.  Clear video of a murder, clear video of the prick trying to game the crime scene.

Bad moon rising.

South Carolina, what a shit hole

They estimated that the victim was at least 18 feet away, unarmed and running in the opposite direction when the officer pumped him in the back with upwards of 5 bullets.

The officer stated that he was fearful that the victim might turn around and attack him. SO......rather than wait to see IF that happened and with close to 20 feet between them, it was OK to shoot to kill him as he continued to run away. Freaking amazing. Factor in the video that is plain to all including, as noted above, the officer calmly altering the scene with his taser.

I completely understand that officers put their lives on the line everyday and the risk they face is nothing compared to most of ours. However, this one is off the charts.

Don't hung juries usually get re-tried?

2015 was the safest year to be a police officer.

>>>>Don't hung juries usually get re-tried?

They can be if they don't settle with a plea deal in the interim.  That's what happened with Phil Spector.   Hung jury first time, conviction the next time around.

Could happen in this case, but still amazing that any juror could watch that film and not convict, especially considering they had the option to go with manslaughter for a killing committed in the heat of the moment without premeditation.  Looks damn pre-meditated too me.  Cold.

The Crutcher case in Tulsa is getting a lot of press here.  Officer Shelby is going to get off.  Her daughter has been all over the news.  Talking about how great her mother is, and crying.  When you Google Crucher in Tulsa the first thing that pops up is "man on PCP shot by police".  I don't care if he had been high on eating ass filled with LSD, meth. bath salts, and PCP.  He did nothing to be shot and killed for, and it is all caught on tape from several angles.

Heard on the news the DA will retry, but first she has to try the jr. klansman who murdered the folks in the church.

May take several months to get started.

Copper free on bond, natch.

Jury of 11 white people and one black man in Charleston, SC

Charleston, SC - In 2010, the racial makeup of Charleston was 70.2% White, 25.4% African American, 1.6% Asian, and 1.5% of two or more races; in addition, 2.9% of the population was Hispanic or Latino, of any race.

No jury of Mr. Scott's peers which make up 25% of the population.

let's see how the racist church massacre washes out, next.

all the shudder

Seems like a cut and dry case. Man who poses no threat is shot in the back 5 times... I'd say that is murder.

>No jury of Mr. Scott's peers which make up 25% of the population

Mr. Scott was not the defendant. Jury of one's peers applies to the defendant.

The land of justice..... for white people.
