Jason Isbell Tonight

Forums:

Had to go to Florida this week unexpectedly to deal with a family emergency.  My mom was in car wreck and got banged up bad (she is ok but will be out of action for while) so down here to help out my sister and her family dealing with house stuff and taking care of my dad.

Meanwhile, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit are playing down the street at the St. Augustine Amphitheater so got tix.   Never seen him but love the Drive By Truckers and looking forward to some REAL country and southern rock.   It's cool being so close to the venue.   Had to get out of the house so walked down there on Tuesday and saw the second half of a Counting Crows show from the woody swamp next to the fence.  Great sound but got tore up by mosquitos.   Stephen Marley played last night and you could hear the show from the front porch.  My son and I took his cat for a walk (he came down from NYC on Thursday with him) and listened to dude play his dad's tunes. Hot has blazes here, topping 100 degrees and its not a "dry heat."

Of most interest to me is taking the cat for a walk.

Cat is a badass:

My son takes him around his neighborhood in Queens.  He once got kicked out of a brewery for a fight with the establishment's in house cat (brewers in NYC have cats to keep out mice).

Vibes to your mom.  Glad to hear she's on the mend.  Good on you all for looking after your pop, too.

Jason Isbell just sat in with Trouble No More, The ABB tribute band featuring Taz Niederauer, Lamar Williams, Jr., Nikki Glaspie, a couple of nights ago:

Enjoy the show Man Who Walks With Cat!

Hey Ken. Sorry for what happened to mom.  Best wishes to her for a speedy recovery. Enjoy the humidity while you can.  And the S H O W S.

Thanks Dave and Andy.   Mom is getting better each day and should be back home in about a week.

Show was very good.   Straight up ass kicking southern rock with thoughtful lyrics and a few slower numbers thrown in here and there.  Kind of like Wilco but if Tweedy could play like Gary Rossington.   Opening band was an outfit called "Baseball Project" - REM offshoot (Petter Buck and Mike Mills and some of their touring side players) doing punk rock songs about baseball.   Their song about the Disco Demolition Night in 1979 at Comiskey Park in Chicago was a hoot.

The venue is a twenty minute walk from my parents' place and the second half of the walk you can either go down the sidewalks on A1A or take the scenic route through the old Spanish quarries in a woody swamp.  It's a far more scenic walk and my son wanted to burn one, so we chose the later.  A security guard warned us that that the mosquitos were bad in the woods, but we shrugged it off.   Should have listened to him.   Got into the woods and my son tried to spark his bowl, but swarms of mosquitos were on us.   It was bad, really bad, and we just bolted and made like Bruce Jenner through the swamp and out to the venue.

Glad your Mother is on the mend, Ken. Baseball project looks interesting, off to YouTube
