oops excuse the typo in the subject line on the SF date!  wish i could edit that...

maybe hit that roach house gig. only way i can see kimmock around here. last time was there with zoner russ, rip and bernie worrell was in the band, rip...and was introuduced to wally ingram just before he started subbing for molo.

Doesn’t seem likely for JID to go back to Denver for another date just a few weeks after. Especially because Kimock is on Jam Cruise and will likely be either on the boat already or preparing to be. Plus, I’m sure JID doesn’t want to compete with Phil and Billy S. Realistically, why would they do that, less than a month after they play there?

would love to see madison, , st charles, des plaines

hopefully 1 of (or all3) work out ...all about an hour or so away, if tix & $ work out, i will be catching at least 2 of these

:)

I am aiming to see Highland Park and/or maybe Augora Hills if it's really good.

...Des Plaines representin'! (My hometown/where I grew up - the venue used to be the local cheap movie house for all of us wayward teenagers on Friday nights)

Excellent logic, Pride.

I know, I'm a dreamer.

Anyone know what "The secret show" is in May?

Don’t know, but looking at the other dates that week (Atlanta, Carolinas) it’s probably down in the SE.

New Orleans? Post Jazz Fest show?

Anybody catch the show in LA last night? I was out of town this weekend, but I'm thinking about trying to catch the Agoura show later this week.

You're all worked up about Grahame but you're excited about this?

Enjoy it if you go.

I think you must have a really low threshold for worked up and for excited, Lance. And yeah, I haven't seen Kimock in quite some time, so I might try to make it to this one.

ROTFL   .. and I may go!

I consider starting a thread on a subject, based solely on criticism of the subject, to be at a fair level of "worked up" about it.

And I hope you do make this one, and give us a good review after.

I'm there now - great stuff! They ran through Wake of the Flood in fine fashion. On break now, we'll see what unfolds in Set 2.

I already highly recommend this show,/tour if it happens to land in a place and time that may be convenient for you.

I think you might have misread my intention with that thread, Lance, or maybe you didn't read it at all. Nepo babies (note the plural) are kind of a thing right now, and I thought a jamband version would make for a good thread. Grahame was just one example.

Whether I make it to the Agoura show will be decided later this week based on a couple of factors. One is that it looks like we might get a midweek break from atmospheric rivers, but I also have to factor in a 75 mile drive each way. Maybe if Strawbud wants to split a table, I'll get motivated. We'll see.

Convenient, Strawbud? $39 a ticket and 2.5 miles (20 blocks) away. Thanks for the review and recommend.

Well, I don't know Mike, maybe I did misread your intention, but to my eye it was a pretty clear 'bash Grahame' post - "his chops have improved, and really, why shouldn't they have?" - "he's (not) fit to front his dad's band".

IMO there is pretty clear intent in those statements.

But that's neither here nor there for this thread, apologies for veering it off course.

For those who see this band, enjoy it folks!

Lance, you know you're running the risk of judit swooping in here and nailing you for critiquing other zoner's posts. lol

I'd call my take on Grahame a pretty tepid critique, not a bash; again, your threshold for these things seems pretty low. If I wanted to bash Grahame, I'd probably start off with something like if his last name wasn't Lesh, he'd probably have a day job pushing paper in a cubicle somewhere, but why would I want to do that?

I thought the first set was better-played (and probably more rehearsed) but the many jumping-off points were probably more predictable for the band and allowed for more risky and high-caliber  improv. Some really great stuff!

They are all fantastic players but the 2 guitarists are particularly versatile - it sounds very full and I swore they had keys in the beginning too. Kimock switches between pedal steel and reg rig.

Set 1 was nearly 90 minutes and Set 2 was about an hour, separated by a 30+ minute break:

Set 2:

China Doll, Help>Slip>Franklin's, Estimated>Darkstar

debating going tomorrow. school night but is close by....

interesting factoid:

Last month Steve Kimock and Pete Lavezzoli  both went to Iceland to work wrh Oteil who recorded an album of Garcia ballads. (Pete played drums on some numbers, John Kimock on others.)

Both Steve and Pete were looking forward to playing with Alphonso.

I just bought some tix to the Keswick (Philly) show later this month.

it sounds very full and I swore they had keys in the beginning too.<

That's BLR playing through a Leslie.

^Exactly! That guy is awesome

Just Do It, Slick. Too bad it's not at The State Room but, if so, it would likely already be sold out too.

Mike, let's chat about that possibility on Thursday. I swayed towards last night's show as I have to be on the complete other side of LA on Thursday and The Lodge Room was really about perfect for this show. I had never been there before but almost everything about it was really enjoyable and super easy and convenient.

Just heard from someone else that last night there was "too much banjo and not enough Kimock stepping forward. But it was fun."

I didn't even know the guy (BLR) played any banjo. "More than half the show he played spacey banjo." Place got a good review.

image0_4.jpeg

lodge room is a good venue, saw the green leaf guys there.

wait, there's banjo?

i liked that place too. nice venue.

wish these guys were coming to the nw corner

I'm not a Facebook guy but was told tour will be streamed live on their Facebook page and available for replay, too. No sign in required.

I'm watching last night's show now. Takes a little while fo them to get cooking, but sounds good when drums and  bass synch up and Kimock energizes.

https://www.facebook.com/JazzIsDead.Tour/

shouldn't someone be playing a horn?

would be cool with midi horn effects every so often.

this is shaping up to be good long-haul driving music

Sure, they could have added keys too but it seems like less is more on this one and I think it all works  really well for what it is..and there are/were MIDI effects too. YMMV.

Too bad no Florida dates. Love Alphonso's bass work from way back with both Bobby and Jazz Is Dead. Was fortunate to see them with Jimmy Herring.

Venue Change in SF it's now at the GAMH

Listened to both nights. When Kimock goes off (he is extra adept at instrumental playing and can't slack off in this 4 piece) and the band is in synch, it's really good.

Awesome music for making art to.

I just noticed there is an Atlanta date. I will check this one out for sure. I am a Kimock fan. I wonder what that "The Great Secret Show" is on may 11?

Banjitar blisssmiley & Col. Bruce

Jimmy was with them through April, maybe into May.

There's a show from Skipper's Smokehouse that's quasi-acoustic due to a power outage.  Still smokin'.

Goldstar discount also available for Tarrytown show.  $20.  It's a school night.

Jim.  Good eye on the great secret show   Let's hope that's Smith's or maybe an Athens.

Debating the ATL show as I have a lot a travel right after but if secret show is near by I might be up for it.

Crowd chatter mixed in just enough to over shadow the music.

Shine on you crazy chatty diamonds

^That Sucks. I was surprised at and impressed with how quiet and respectful the crowd was at the opener in LA.

Denver stream last night was sick. Second set opened with a long stretch of dissonant brain-fry shit into Dark Star, Kimock making demonic noises. Another long brain-melt into a full Terrapin Suite, then Eleven.

These guys are sick. It’s always a trip to hear music so spooky and heavy played in one of those antique seated theaters. The Dead must have had a blast playing 9/27/72 at the Stanley Theater in Jersey. This JID lineup is plugged into that kind of shit. Definitely not a Top 40 GD hits kind of thing.

Watched the stream last night; I love what JID was doing in the 90s but I think this version comes across a little hollow- Jimmy Herring and Billy Cobham were great fits for this outfit.  As good as Kimock is, his laid-back approach takes away from the "tightness" that this group previously had. The sound was quite sparse at times (keyboards would have helped). Was good to hear AJ be the bass god he is though. Maybe this band would be better with other material?

Still, hard to complain about the free stream. I'm glad I tuned in.

I love the more open psychedelic space-jazz approach of this lineup with Kimock. They can play loud but they also play a lot of QUIET stuff that has room to wander somewhere beautiful. It is absolutely true that the earlier JID was much “tighter” and more heavy hitting, but the older JID was also too much of a chops fest for me. Millions of fast notes and double bass drums and “virtuoso” soloing all around to where it was always too busy and showy for me (“holy shit, did you hear those blazing triplets?”). Not the GD vibe I was looking for and that’s not what Kimock does. This lineup is actually more “jazz” in a Miles Davis or Coltrane kind of sense, and less the Al DiMeola kind of flashy chops thing which bores me to tears.

Another comparison I would make with this new lineup is that it has a Bill Frisell kind of thing, probably a better analogy because it’s a guitar thing. This band sounds like they’re into Frisell.

Go Big for (fighting) Hunger with Go Big All-star Band @ Portland, ME on March 2:

I was mostly underwhelmed at the GAMH with times of inspiration. Enjoyed Alphonso's solos, especially during EOTW...

Another comparison I would make with this new lineup is that it has a Bill Frisell kind of thing, probably a better analogy because it’s a guitar thing.

there are LOTS of parallels between kimocks and frisells playing IME. coming from totally different musical scenes, putting on VERY different shows, but a ton of similarities regarding tone, musical sensibilities, approach to improv, etc etc

Eugene shows just got canceled due to lack of advance ticket sales! crying

Tonite is first night of the current tour. San Francisco.

These guys are excited to play together again and it should be worthwhile. Especially with some new material to explore.

Go to the show. Please report back.

(We're going to see them Friday in D.C. )

> lack of advance ticket sales<

I know it's summer and ther's a lot of musical competition, but what's keeping the folks away? Any Kimock band used to be a draw up there.

(Maybe they have to take the word "Jazz" out of the name? -- probably sounds too old fashioned and sleepy for the Deadco kids.)

Zero would have sold out the wow hall both nights, possibly even in advance

needs a horn player.

^ needs a horn player.

I can see the possibilities in that, however, that musical space is often taken up by the electric banjo. A horn would add some physical and emotional resonance, though. Space jazz can be on the sterile side.

Personally, I hope they get a little more "danceable" while still staying in the exploratory range. I still eventually get restless at live event if I have to sit and just listen for too long.

I just saw Santana last weekend in Atlantic City and sititng in assigned seats the whole show was challenging.

If I were in SF today or tomorrow, I'd GTTS!

I don't care for the Portland venue much and it collides with my Perseied meteor shower camping plan.

>>>probably sounds too old fashioned and sleepy for the Deadco kids<<<

Oh, there is a broad range of dead heads of EVERY age who don't know anything about jazz (but who think they do).

As for the kids specifically, the very nature of being a kid means their ears and minds are more open to new & different things, as opposed to most of us old-timers, who think we know it all already.

As for me with this group, no spot taken. This old dead head will be on the Stanford campus tonight seeing Taylor Eigsti, one of the greatest jazz piano players in the world (anybody heard of him?) and the audience will be about half Stanford students, with at least some of them likely to be Deadco fans.

Real jazz continues to be alive, well and thriving all around us, and even while having to weave through the Taylor Swifts, BTSs and Travis Scotts of the world, young people continue to find it and support it.

GO TO A JAZZ SHOW!

^ Define "real jazz." (no don't, but on some other music boards whatever you write would be endlessly debated.)

I'm encouraged by your experience.

I'm just saying this band needs better marketing buzz if they are canceling shows, cause they certainly have the "Dead cover band" pedigree and the musical chops. (3 of the 4 musicians have been chosen to play with actual GD band members.)

So sorry the show got canceled Lollo.

People mortgaged their houses and/or went into major credit card debt to see the last DeadCo tour that just wrapped up. I think a lot of potential ticket buyers are tapped out right now.

A band that's 25% Kimock not achieving lift-off?

Huh.

Tell you one thing, Kimock and Alphonso together is a match made in heaven.

Eugene is notorious for lack of advance ticket sales; people buy at the last minute. I couldn't tell you why, it's just always been true.

I wonder if their odd tour schedule had an impact on Eugene. SF x 2, DC x2, St. Louis, Portland x 2.  That's a lot of miles in a week.  Nevertheless I bought Portland tickets.

Some amazing brilliance going on there.

Eugene should have stepped up in advance, they’re missing out. If you want to hear Kimock really PLAY, this is some shit. The man is brilliant.

This one is spot on...... some of that real jazz Lanc was talking about........ :-)

Thank you again Ted -- I'm sitting here having my morning coffee on the East coast watching last night's show in SF...much aappreciated

Last night in DC they tossed in Footprints by Wayne Shorter, and You Know You Know by Mahavishnu Orchestra. Alphonso is a bad man.

Went to th first of two shows in DC. If you have the chance, I recommend that you check these guys out.

Thx for heads-up.  Just scored tix, not many sold, Regency Ballroom SF 3-22-2024.  Right after phil's BD concerts.  Psyched.

I believe 3/22 Regency is the Beatles tribute Kimock is in? Not Jazz Is Dead, looks like.

Yes that Regency show is the Beatles tribute called "All You Need Is Love" with Kimock. Hope you knew that it wasn't Jazz Is Dead when you bought your tickets.

Well that explains why sooooooooooooooooo many tix are available.  I  wasn't aware.  Thx for letting me know that.  Gonna go anyway and enjoy some Beatles.
