Outlaw and Classic Country

Forums:

I've been having a lot of fun the last few weeks digging for all sorts of country classics.  Been big on Townes Van Zandt, Marty Robbins and Stonewall Jackson lately.  Let's share some links and discourse.

What crimes did the outlaws commit?

I suppose it would depend on the particular song you're listening to, right?

Slack, check out  "Tales from the Tour Bus"

I played for the Outlaws

Saw Margo Price and her band tear up Revolution Hall last night.  She has the voice of Dolly Parton and all the piss and vinegar of Tanya Tucker and Merle Haggard, backed by a band that jams.  A welcome high-heeled boot stomping kick to the ass of mainstream Country music.

I can't take more than a few minutes of high pitched vocals.

My personal fave is Billy Joe Shaver. He wrote most of Waylon's break-out album, Honky Tonk Heroes, and to me personifies classic outlaw country  And for your information, Knotseau, he shot a man in the face.

Some random tunes that I like, mostly about drinkin;.

Johnny Russell: Rednecks White Sox and Blue Ribbon Beer.

Gary Stewart - DrinkinThing.  Gary Stewart is a true honky tonker who clearly drinks too much, sleeps with the wrong women, and gets cheated on a lot.

Hank Thompson :  he is much more fun to go drinking with than Gary Stewart.

sturgill, stapleton, johnson, margo price, nikki lane, whitey morgan, hayes carril

lots of good stuff.

Love the classic stuff and a lot of new outlaw stuff(I think they are/were Outlaws cause they smoked pot.) Not so much the glitter garbage from brooks et al.

Here's a new guy(Turts mentioned him above. Good thing.) I like alot.

Never heard of Corb Lund before but Hayes is there too.

As to new stuff I am particularly partial to Hellbound Glory and their main dude Leroy Virgil. He's got some great hard livin' songs.  I'll check out that Hayes guy Mark, I've heard you mention him before.

Allison Moorer is wanted for credit card fraud in at least 3 states & Shelby Lynne is probably committing a crime right now.

Of all the country music my Dad listened to, I loved Kris Kristofferson the best.  I don't know if that's country, or outlaw, although he is a Highwayman, so that's some cred.

Anyways, GREAT songwriter with a voice that feels like an old leather jacket on a cold, rainy night...whatever that means.

My favorites of his.
