Phil’s 84th Trip, Port Chester, NY

Forums:

Saw the rumors on the 3/13 thread, thought I'd begin a thread for tonight... and post a new rumor for Saturday.

Tonight's show and Saturday are now scheduled to play on the SiriusXM Grateful Dead channel and the Veeps streaming surface.

My money says that it's the final show on 3/16 that will be the one to see and the one to remember.

Happy birthday Phil!!!

Matt Busch at the Cap all week

Matt no longer works for Bobby so this is meaningless unless he is looking for a job

Since when does Matt no longer work for Bobby? He was on hand with Bobby at the NYE shows. I know several people who saw him working those shows and talked with him. So this change must have happened after the New Year.

Rumors of Phil's guests being Mike Gordon and Daniel Donato

433239677_10169245557520144_7366898824874410535_n.jpg

A friend just posted a stage pic my guess from seeing the rigs is Scott Metzger and Rick Mitiridonda... there is a spot open between the guitar rig and drums for a surprise guest... unless it's graham and Metzger that's a possibility I can't see the far side too well but next to Phil is a blue Tele I'm pretty sure I've seen Metzger play

Phil and the almost dead cosmic goose?

I'm probably totally wrong lol a quick search does show Donato playing that tele

Yes, parted ways in February.

Wow!!!  Matt denied a piece of the Sphere action.

Micharl Girdon and Daniel Donato tonight

Happy fuckin Birth Day Phil

Show time?

happy birthday Phil!

That is pretty astonishing about Matt no longer with Bobby. All I can think of now is Bobby going over to Mayer's guy, Mr. Azoff.

Cosmic Charlie

Maybe addit. guests in the second set?

With NY close by, there are a lot of folks who could be real surprises.

Tomorrow 3/16 will be the really big one, IMO.

Set 1

Cosmic Charlie
They Love Each Other

In! (Couch in anyway)

Phils killing it!

is this the dude on Instagram that makes up songs?

he's Barry Sless 3.0 who sings

(but of course, not as good, cause he's a shriller Tele guy)

These folks could show up tonite or tomorrow:

Larry Campbell

Steve Molitz

Then, some longshots, but good friends of Phil:

Jackie Greene

Chris Robinson

Anders Osborne

Set 1

Friend of the Devil

Daniel D is somewhat underwhelming to me, especially for a calendar date show like this with Phil. To me, he's still basically a rookie. And to be the lead guitarist on Phil's birthday? I mean, he's not bad, but wow...

Expecting heavier artillery tomorrow night for sure.

Maybe addit. guests in the second set?

Mike Gordon

That stream Knot posted is WAY better than the other one that's been up for the other shows, very clean with no fools yowling. Is it the "official" stream?

Thanks for the video stream!

Was listening to Sirius but there's a delay.

I think the rookies They Love Each Other has been the highlight so far.

but Molo is keeping me here at this point, so fluid and constantly shifting the flow and pace 0f what he plays.

I thought some of the guitar interplay during FOD was quite exquisite

Donato is a great guitar player and not intimidatied by where he is

I think Donato is doing great!  Phil likes to stir it up, bring in the unexpected, and once again he delivers, like only Phil can...  Long Live the Inventive Phil Lesh!!!

The free video channel switched to a live stream of George Porter Jr for Phil setbreak... it's groovin

I agree, Daniel sounds great and I'm pleasantly surprised. It's more of a country-jammy thing than a jazzy style a-la Kimock, but sounds good. With more years of maturing, Daniel sounds like a young Barry Sless, with vocals. His vocal threw me off: when he sang TLEO he sounded like a female, and at first I thought, wow Amy is singing low in her range. And it was Daniel! His voice is unusual, doesn't really sound like a male vocal. I really thought it was Amy at first, until I heard Amy singing high harmony.

I was wondering the same thing, sounded like a girl, but sounded really good to my ears too!

Set 2

Box of Rain

free video channel switched to a live stream of George Porter Jr for Phil setbreak... it's groovinI

it will switch back to Phil

I like DD, his voice threw me too, but it's not bad...just not what I was expecting. I've heard him play circles around Sless, and vs/vs. I think it depends on the kind of night they're having. He seems like a super nice guy too. Better than average, if he keeps improving he'll be world class and soon, but I agree he still has some climbing to do.

I'm sure Phil isn't throwing stones at DD's vocals FWIW lol

Jake?

Thanks for that free video link Woz!!

Daniel Donato is one of Billy K.'s favorite newer musician to play with. I am surprised there aren't other guests showing up...

Thanks Druba...sorry to miss you last week !  I really expected Larry & Teresa to show up.

Have fun !

One luv!

fucking GREAT

I've never been the biggest fan of the Viola Lee jams that Phil does. It's not a Dark Star that opens up, it's just a long jam in G that kind of goes around and around in circles for however long without ever changing key. It's usually not a feature of my favorite Phil shows. It's an excuse to dance for sure, but as a listener it bores me.

Eyes of the World

That video stream is great - less crowd and multiple angles.

Eyes.

Woz...not so tecchie...but i did it...thanks <3

Ok now... Eyes of the World will tell us a lot about what Daniel can really do. Major key jazzy tune where you actually CANNOT play blues licks at all. Has to be major key and jazzy. At least that's how it's supposed to be. Some players can't stay off their blues licks long enough, so they try falling back on their bluesy note bends and phrases and it just doesn't work for Eyes. It's a completely non-blues melody. So this will be a different thing.

Thanks for that free video link Woz!!>>>Ditto, great find      Thumbs Up Happy Face GIFs | Tenor

Plug for Baltimore - the stream filler is/was tonight's show at the 8 x 10.

A Tribute to Russell Batiste featuring Dennis Chambers (Santana/Parliment) George Porter, Jr. (The Meters) Adam Deitch (Lettuce) John Papa Gros (Papa Grows Funk) Cris Jacobs (The Bridge) + a set by George Porter Jr and his Runnin' Pardners with horns featuring Mark Mullins and Tracey Griffin.

Jason on piano teasing a little Siberian Khatru by Yes at the end of his Eyes piano solo. I guarantee no one on that stage recognized what that was.

Major key jazzy tune where you actually CANNOT play blues

it's a major 7th which is even more difficult to solo on than a major key. The dropped 7th is a bitch. It was Jerry's secret sauce though, he loved the major 7th chord.

I caught that Siberian Khatru too. ( and I love soloing over maj 7 )

Right. But even if you don't accent the major 7 very much, you can solo in Eyes with the right feel as long as you stay in major and DON'T fall back on mixolydian blues 7s. But the lesser players always seem to fall back to the blues licks even in Eyes, because it's all they know how to do. Soloing in major while avoiding blues scales is not easy.

Agreed, but on the solo you have to alternate between E major and B minor to be really effective. That's the easiest way out

Mike Gordon up next'.

Set break, with a 3rd set on the way, Woot!!!!

Jerry could play serious deep legit blues as powerfully as any guitarist. Listen to any great version of Black Peter. But Jerry played blues when it was right, and he played non-blues major (or non-blues minor) when it was right, depending on the song. But this is Jerry we're talking about. The Master.

You sure as hell can't play Crazy Fingers with recycled blues licks. And in jams like Slipknot, Jerry is stretching out in minor, but he's not playing blues. He played blues when it was called for, and avoided it when not.

birthday cake?

First set was kinda messy and confused, with some moments of brilliance.

But what a difference a set makes. Second set was everything set one was not - clear, exploratory, all graceful instruments known.

Daniel is pretty good. He;s no Barry Sless - yet. But he's got potential.

>>>>>But the lesser players always seem to fall back to the blues licks even in Eyes, because it's all they know how to do

Mayernaise anyone?

No disagreement. I am just saying Jerry never ran out of ideas playing in Emaj7 and most guitar players do. I find it easier to play in Emaj and then Bminor on the switch in thee jam as do most guitar players I ave observed playing Eyes. Very few have endless ideas in Emaj7.

Apolojies for the guitar geek talk!

He;s no Barry Sless - yet. But he's got potential.

he'll need to hit the weight room...

>I've heard him play circles around Sless, and vs/vs. I think it depends on the kind of night they're having.<

I was just bullshitting.... only referring to being another short guy who needs a headband -- from the East coast and with country influences. Each generation deserves one. DD was born in 95 so maybe he's the reincarnation of Jerry for all I know.

But I'll put a 29 year old Barry up against him anyday.

Musically, I've only seen DD once before, this past August.  He wasn't playing all Dead so it's nice to see him stretch out all  jamband-y a bit. JamCruse friends liked him. He's going to be at DelFest so I'll know more soon.

Aw man that Box

I think Mayer has gotten better to where he's learned enough about Garcia to know when to avoid the blues cliches. I've heard his improvement on that.

I remember when Warren used to solo in Eyes with some blues shit and I was like, "Dude... NO. This ain't the Allman Brothers Band, at least not on this song."

Ah, Estimated. Another great one. Jerry taking it way out in F sharp minor in the jam, and never a blues riff in sight.

Exactly

Thanks again for stream :)
So special...<3

Set 3
Birthday Cake / Band intros

Let it Grow

This Estimated end jam shows us where we are not.

Man, I really really really miss Kimock with Phil. Steve really shot himself in the foot 25 years ago. Damn shame. Because that man can play some intergalactic guitar, better than any other Phil Friends, IMO.

So does this mean The Bass Emperor torch has officially been passed to Mike Gordon? (joking. joking)

Ha ha. He's paying homage to his idol and inspiration

^
Exactly, Mike was always the true Deadhead in Phish...    and now he gets to add fire to Phils Bday Party, Long Live Phil!!!

I remember seeing Kimock with Phil and Jorma at the Warfield in June 99. And Jorma was Jorma, but they did a St Stephen and the middle jam opened up and Kimock took it WAY out there beyond the Milky Way and I was like, holy shit...

That is the Kimock way

Donato just slayed the solo in LIG

I've been impressed with Mike playing GD ever since he stepped in for Phil at the TRI studios Halloween webcast back in 2010 or so.

Set 3
Birthday Cake / Band intros

Let it Grow
Sugar Magnolia (Mike Gordon on Vocals, yeah!)

I don't think Phil has ever found Steve's equal. I mean, even in the Q, Warren and Jimmy are awesome and they have serious chops and great ears, but still they're not like THAT, not what Kimock does.

time to dance...

Wow, they're going all in on the Weir material in this set, and that's great.

I wonder if Gordon gets the chair? Or at least gets to sit in it for a while. It's a sweet chair. It's padded.

Screenshot 2024-03-15 234125.png

Who did Gordon kill for him to get the chair??

Hubby has taken me to Phish in AC shows....I am not into them too much.

He says that when I go it's a great show !!  So I am a good luck charm....lol !

Oooh la la la!

Wow. Great. Thank you WOZ for that link!

They were doing a lot of Bobby songs there. good point.

These GenZwooks aren't gonna know which tour to do now that Danny Donato has street cred.

>>I don't think Phil has ever found Steve's equal. I mean, even in the Q, Warren and Jimmy are awesome and they have serious chops and great ears, but still they're not like THAT, not what Kimock does.

I appreciate all your comments about Kimock. Yes, he can play in this spacey, exploratory way. Watching him is amazing because you can see him working it out and going places. He wasn't as good of a fit with Ratdog (I was a huge Ratdog fan and saw them lots for years) as he was with Phil. But, yeah, he was out of that Phil & Friends thing very quickly (those infamous stories...).

It's approaching the Midnight  Hour back East.  Are they coming back out?  Doesn't look like anyone has left.

I don't think Phil has ever found Steve's Jerry's equal.

Fixed that.

Now that Phil has his cake, he has to eat it too.

And, we're back...

to where we started?

LOL ^^^
I was wondering if they didn't finish CC but did it loop?

...and about now backstage the Bass Emperor Chair has been presented to Mike Gordon so he can fold it into it's golden chalise-like stuffsack and drive it to Vermont. And although it might not be the original one (Billy lit that one on fire one day up on the Russian River), it will forever represent the few men that are the temporary vessels of the deep sonic frequencies of the Psychedelic Universe. Creating Gravity Waves is their forte. And so it shall be. (Unless Phil decides to hold on to it for summer visits to the beach.)

I'm okay with the replay.  I was working and didn't jump on the stream until the end of Sugar Magnolia/SSDD.

Thanks for the stream Woz!

Great harmonies last night.

The LOVE in that room last night was incroyable. Whole show was great

Port Chester! Phil's 84th was a blast.

The Love was amazing!!! Best hug ever from a "stranger" wink lol

Sent you a text on the french line, not sure you are getting them. Headed with the crew to the Port Chester diner for brunch at noon. Would love to see you and Andy there!

YES YES YES The love literally palpable. I even gave Shapiro a big hug after he let the crowd of sidewalk dancers in third set and scolded the door guards for closing the door. haha fun moment.

Pure goodness. Phil was so happy. The crowd was just so well behaved (for lack of better/less generic words) and just so happy. Super fun, high energy celebration of PHIL. So much fucking fun.

No doubt epic times!

Happy that everyone there got a great experience!

Tommy you got a Cosmic Charlie, yay!

Did the video stream.  The capitol Theater production team with  many Cameras throughout the  event covered every angle.   Video experience was high quality and the sound was excellent. Was very happy to see a new lead guitar.  The band sounded good right out of the gate and like the best of Phil and Dead related incarnations the show was a energy builder. Phil looked great and hats off to the man for choosing  Daniel Donato, a lead guitar, that offered a fresh sound yet very much Jerry inspired. Without knowing who he was we called him "little Jerry".  Daniel sang many. a Jerry tune and was a breath of fresh air. Song selection and placement  was  creative and novel. and song placement   IMHO this show blew the doors off the previous show. Phil looked very good and  played lead base and was fully motivated.  Peter Shapiro lead the crowd in a happy birthday cake presentation and it almost felt like this  was a huge  "thank you" for making the cap his second home. You could see Phils elation and the crowds years of appreciation pouring out and overflowing the Capitol. Then with the announcement of a third set the crowd knew Phil and band were making this a show "one" for the record books. Special guest Mike Gordon of Phish played the third set and was aware this was a moment in time no one would forget.  He was great.  I thought this show was magnificent and feel we were blessed one more time.  Long live Phil & Phriends.

Loved it from the couch

Long Live Phil!

"Together, Lesh and Gordo teamed up for a dual-bass attack that rumbled The Cap through Dead staples “Estimated Prophet”, “Let It Grow”, and “Sugar Magnolia”—all originally sung by Lesh’s estranged Dead bandmate Bob Weir."

Phil and Bob estranged? That's news.

What a long estranged trip it's been.

listening to 2nd half, goosebumpy with the end of Box line at 84. wow.

all in attendance seemed to have a moment.

Totally!

Here's a recent Daniel Donato show i founf on YouTube. I dig this kid!

Donato is great.

Heady and heavy vibes last night.

Tonight will be even better, I suspect.

I agree, they just got warmed up last night

Have a beautiful night all who are going and a sparkly one at that.

I still can't believe Matt Busch and Weir have separated, after Mexico apparently. That's crazy. What is Weir thinking, Azoff is his man now? And who's going to do all of Weir's setlists the way Matt did? Very odd news.

<<Hey now, Tales Heads!

On very short notice, the GD Channel was thrilled to broadcast Phil Lesh's 84th Birthday party from the Capitol on Friday night, but since we didn't get all the details nailed down until the last minute, we couldn't get the word out as fast as we'd have liked.

But if you missed it, fear not! We've got several encore presentations of the show happening over the next few days!

Here's the schedule of rebroadcasts:

Sat 3/16 @ 3pm ET

Sun 3/17 @ 12pm ET

Mon 3/18 @ 3pm ET

Tue 3/19 @ 12pm ET

Wed 3/20 @ 9pm ET

It's the 3/16 show we want Sirius to play.
