Phil's Friends

Forums:

The Warfield thread got me thinking about everyone who's played with Phil as a Friend over the years. It's got to be hundreds at this point, but I don't think I've ever seen them all listed in one place before. Seems like it might be a good project for the zone.

I'll start with his sons Grahame and Brian.

There's got to be a weekend lineup somewhere on this list!   ;)

There will be if there isn't already, LLOLLO.

I'm thinking this would make a cool poster too. 30 years of P&F: 1994-2024, with all the Friends listed. Any zone artists want to collaborate?

Also, Derek Trucks.

I'm not a designer but happy to help with creative strategies.

Is there a Zoner designer out there?

I think most of Phil's friends can be found on the Wiki page, it's a lot of people over the years!

Phil played the whole second set with DSO at TXR -Does that count?

Was it a P&F set, or a DSO set, Treeflo?

> Note: This list is incomplete.

And that's where the zone comes in, C-R. Phil the gaps of the wiki's in betweens.

Miles Schon for a wheely good show at TXR

Bob Weir – guitar, vocals <<<<

How is Bobby not family?

Mike- was a DSO set w Phil.

dont forget stan franks

Does the set with J. Geils in the TRX bar make him a friend?

Couple of drummers to include on that main list. Jay Lane, Pete Lavezzoli, Scott Amendola.

Jay of course. Pete played those Mayer TXR shows and others, Scott Amendola a few as well.

Tom Hamilton from JRAD.

Some females: Susan Tedeschi, Elliott Peck, Sunshine, Jeannette Ferber.

> How is Bobby not family?

Of course he is, Face, but that doesn't exempt him from being a Friend, does it?

> Mike- was a DSO set w Phil.

> Does the set with J. Geils in the TRX bar make him a friend?

My thinking was a list of Friends for shows billed as Phil Lesh & Friends.

Bill Frisell and Billy Martin also on the list. I saw them both with Phil at TXR in 2015. Not long before the Mayer shows.

> How is Bobby not family?

Do spouses introduce their wives or husbands to others as "friends"?

Chris Gelbuda - guitar

Henry Kaiser - guitar

Carlos Santana - duh

Boyd Tinsley - violin

Melvin Seals....Phil played the whole second set with DSO at TXR -Does that count?....

May 2016 The Cap: Seals, Krasno, Haynes, Koford, Leone, PL

Katie Jacoby -violin

Natalie Cressman- trombone/vocals

Jennifer Hartswick -trumpet/vocals

I also remember when they had the open mic sit in w/ phil at TXR,  a friend, Danny Geary, sat in and sang a few tunes over several visits, as did quite a few other Phans, so there should be civilian players on this list too!

>>>>Katie Jacoby -violin

Plus Mikaela Davis

and James Casey

all brought some superb moments these last couple of years.

> Do spouses introduce their wives or husbands to others as "friends"?

This question makes me think you've taken the idea of "family" in the GD-sense too literally, Face. Here's why. While the GD organization has often been referred to as a family, if Phil was to introduce Bob to a third-party, do you think he would refer to him as his brother? I doubt it. I think it's more likely Phil would refer to Bob as his band mate, or simply introduce him by name.

I'll mention here too that I'm surprised you chose to advocate for Bob over Jerry, or Vince for that matter. It was the three of them and Phil who performed at the first PL & Friends show--not PL & Brothers--on 9/24/94.

Marmaduke.

> Radioactive(can't remeber if he sat in on the Summer Sessions tour?)

I'm only finding him as part of a Bob Weir & Friends lineup from 2016.

Steve Kimock appears in this thread six, make that seven times.

I'm seeing seven (Ctrl F).

Kimock might be my favorite Phil's friend.

But I'll tell you danged 'ol what, Phil's had a lot of good ones.

Probably more than anybody ever.

Lots of Phriends....

Maybe the BEST phriends of anyone ever.

At least, that's what people say.....

...and they say it ALOT. devil

To use a sports metaphor, I think we could say that Phil has a deep bench. A very deep bench.

We should also take a moment here to appreciate Bret Heisler's foresight in what he chose to leave behind for us. Even though philzone.org is gone, there's still a lot of stuff on philzone.com that's alive and well. Like this little gem for instance:

https://www.philzone.com/philbase/

I'm working my way through the years (up to 2006 so far) and making a lot of additions to the list that I'll post a bit later today.

Thank you, Bret!

Until Steve Parish nudged Kimock to ask for a raise.

Thanks for that Philbase link. So great!

are these all folks who were actually billed for one or more shows as Phil's friends?

or are we lumping all those who incidentally may have appeared onstage at the same time as Phil?

I don't consider sit-ins as friends

Well, Bss, that's where this gets a bit complicated. My original intent was a list of billed Friends, but then when this thread started to gain traction yesterday, I quickly realized that I didn't want to play referee, and I really didn't want to have to tell folks the name they posted didn't qualify for the list. That job's still available though, if you're interested. (If I was the emoticon type, there'd be a winking one here.)

I think your original intent was spot on mike

friends are paid musicians who are appearing on the show bill as friends

the rest are acquaintances

The real problem is determining who's who. That philbase link has some good, clear, crowd-sourced records, but it only runs through 2015. For dates after that, you'd need to find a source, or likely multiple sources, that show who was billed, and then figure out who was a sit-in from that. Not what I'd call a fun little one-day project.

Dirty Dozen Brass Band played with him in Asbury Park.

Do you have a date or year for that, Keith? I'm not finding anything.

He also had the Harlem Gospel Chior and rapper Talib Kweli at the Apollo show.

Phil-Lesh-Graphic.png

Funny you should bring these in right after my exchange above with Bss about what constitutes a Friend, Keith. The Asbury Park and the Harlem gigs were both Terrapin Family Band shows, not Phil & Friends shows, even though it very clearly says "very special friends" on the Harlem graphic. So how would you score that one, Bss?

I wanted to mention too that even when it's clear who's a friend and who's a sit-in, determining Friend status can still be complicated. Levon Helm is one such case. He sat in for a few songs one night, but relegating him to "acquaintance" status just doesn't seem right when you take into consideration the influence he had on Phil. My recollection is that it was after visiting Levon's barn for a ramble that Phil came up with the idea for a similar musical community that eventually found its center at Terrapin Crossroads. Seems like that alone should grant Levon Friend status.

I think very special friends are friends indeed

the family band is what it is, most members individually are also friends

Agree Levon is more a center of influence than acquaintance. I mean, Phil plays Levon's songs on any given night.

No doubt he's at least a very special friend. He's almost in a class by himself

Robbie Taylor

It was back in the late 90s, but: David Gans needs to be on there as well. Certainly if Gary Lambert is on. I saw Phil with Gans at Maritime Hall, maybe one of the first P&F gigs.

Michael Tilson Thomas. At Davies Symphony Hall, at the first Philharmonia. Graham Nash was also on that Philharmonia.

And to be clear, MTT with Phil at Davies Symphony Hall, and then ALSO at Philharmonia at Maritime Hall, two different events.

where's Bob Dylan

where's Greg Allman

where's Willie Nelson

weird

Willie Nelson's on the most recent list. Point me to some dates for Dylan and Allman.

> Philharmonia.

Are we calling these events P&F shows?

oh and btw add the ones who paid to play

like sundawg etc...

Louie Lardo's on there, T.O.D., and Lord Henry too courtesy of Turtle. I didn't see anything about sundawg, or scumdog, as I think Nick used to call him. Wasn't the junkball meth fest his thing?

jus sayin' it's weird that

Dylan and Greg were never a "friend"  but shared the stage with Phil

didn't richie get in on that action, might not of, memory and shit...

I remember them sharing billings, but did they play together? Allman maybe, but almost certainly not for Dylan, I'm thinking.

so if nick called him "scumdog" he don't count?

and no, that was 3g's fuck nut

sundawgy or in 3d, sonny, played with phil

not to be confused with sounddawg Tim  (smiley face)

Of course not. That was just some long gone memories kicking in.

It was the three of them and Phil who performed at the first PL & Friends show--not PL & Brothers--on 9/24/94.<<<

Mike, it wasn't meant to be literal; rather, in the deepest spiritual sense.   Each of them is akin to a broken piece of a hologram that can still project the "whole" from their perspective.  It's kind of like the mob:  once you're a part of the larger "GD hologram", there's only one way to leave .... you're still a part of it ... even as a "broken piece".

I was unaware of the first so-called incarnation P&F!  But yeah, the case for Jerry is the same.  Not stronger, but the same.  The hologram doesn't assign seniority based upon one's "role".

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FEY8ei1wCqQ

BTW, where's ned been?  Shouldn't he be antagozing me about now in this thread?

I like the hologram metaphor, Face, but that doesn't mean I'm buying it as a valid reason for questioning the Friend label for Bob, or Jerry or Vince, or for any of the members of the GD. Why can't someone be part of the hologram and a Friend at the same time?

As I was pondering this, I recalled the SNACK Concert that was held at Kezar Stadium on March 23, 1975. One of the groups who played that day was Jerry Garcia and Friends, which consisted of Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Merl Saunders, Ned Lagin, Keith Godchaux, Phil Lesh, and Donna Godchaux.

The hologram may not assign seniority based upon one's "role", but if Jerry says they're friends, that's good enough for me.

I love you guys, but this wasn't a contest. Mike started an excellent thread that took off like a prairie fire. Tremendous knowledge here on the zone, and i couldn't hold a candle to anyone here for Dead knowledge. I was thinking this morning when i posted that someone, maybe everyone, had thought of Cody, but was wondering why his name didn't appear.

Phil is a shining star of the GD Family. His donor rap comes from his Heart, and i would bet the house that he was and still is in contact with Cody's family and the families of the dedicated professionals who carried out the organ harvest and his transplant. Bet on it, folks. He is one Grateful man and he knows how incredibly fortunate he is to be living in a time and space where knowledge and technology allowed this to happen. Phil is a gem.  Whoever gets to go the Warfield tonight, show him all your Love. He understands borrowed time and couldn't be more appreciative.

Whoops, today is not tomorrow. The Warfield tomorrow night.  :)))))

> can't someone be part of the hologram and a Friend at the same time?

I think I just answered my own question while I was washing my lunch dishes. It's that hologram metaphor that got me thinking again, and more specifically the light involved, and even more specifically, the photons, which have been observed to possess the qualities of both a particle and a wave. So if light itself can be two things at once, I think it's probably okay (or doesn't violate the laws of physics at least) for a part of the hologram to be a Friend at the same time.

So if light itself can be two things at once, I think it's probably okay (or doesn't violate the laws of physics at least) for a part of the hologram to be a Friend at the same time<<<

Is the essential reality of light "two things at once", or is it the same "thing" that can be sensed/measured in such a way that presents itself with multiple simultaneous characteristics?

Quite The List ! yes

This !

Good question, Face. I'll answer by venturing that--in our way of seeing things--light behaves as both a wave and as a particle, which, to my understanding, are two different things.

https://lco.global/spacebook/light/light-particle/

But the second part of your question seems to align with the idea that "light behaves as a wave and as a particle, depending on the circumstances and the effect being observed," so maybe it's both (again). Kind of like the old playground retort: Same difference.

We should get together someday to smoke a fat joint or two and hash these things out.

^ I know how to answer those questions to where you'll have the deepest understanding of light you'll ever experience in this life. You won't have any more questions and all it takes is 75mg for each of you. Care to visit the light?

Like this, Joe?

Mr_Toad's_Wild_Ride.jpeg

^just like that, Mike :)))

I hope i didn't hijack this wonderful thread, but I'll say one more thing and then ill drop it.

One thing ive learned with understanding in the past 15 months is that indigenous people the world over don't understand the Western lifestyle of seemingly continuous "progress". The kind that causes our minds to be racked with anxiety, stress, and worry, all of which ultimately leads to mental unhappiness, dissatisfaction, depression and physical disease. The suicide rate in this country is so saddening, but not at all surprising.

I hope to be meeting a Shipibo Master in March in ceremony. The gentleman, my teacher,  who led the aya ceremonies last weekend has trained in Peru on and off for many months. He said the native Amazonians live so deeply in a 3rd world setting.....and couldn't be happier. Truly happy. Obtaining something as simple as new shorts or tshirts brings joy. Their daily joy comes from their family and friends being constantly present and happy. They fully understand the simplicity of this:   if their hearts and minds are healthy, all good things follow and fall into place naturally.

I'm sure I'm not saying anything anyone here isn't already aware of, but my point is this: the more we dive into and dwell on technicalities and details, the further we remove ourselves from seeing the whole picture. We often seem to pride ourselves on our knowledge of minutia, when the only picture that really counts is this:  This life is a precious gift.  Phil gets this in spades.

The medicines they use are used specifically to keep all people in their villages with healthy hearts and minds. True internal happiness naturally follows. They don't profess to have detailed answers to the pure magic of these medicines, they simply understand,  but more importantly,  ACCEPT,  that they are gifts from another space that have been provided to them to use with Gratitude and deep respect.

If i remember correctly, the GD family used to pass around matchbooks in the late 60's with the words inside : "May the baby Jesus open your eyes and shut your mouth".  Those young folks at the time got it. From deep, profound psychedelic experiences. My hope is that more and more people will try these medicines, if they feel the call, and spread the word of their phenomenal ability to heal hearts and worried minds.

Love to all. No exceptions.

All these friends, yet still no box set! :(

>I'm thinking this would make a cool poster too. 30 years of P&F: 1994-2024, with all the Friends listed.<

Here ya go Mike. The resemblances to real folks are simply uncanny and instantly recognizable (under just the right influences. of course).

IMG_3185.jpg

^ Ok OK it needs some work -- but whatya want for free?  I'm in a hotel room for cristsake trying not to keep my wife awake with my snoring.

Kind of like the old playground retort: Same difference.

We should get together someday to smoke a fat joint or two and hash these things out.<<<

More things to hash out:

I always find it interesting how playground sayings get handed down over time.   Would I be going out on a limb to assume there's still such a thing as "front cuts, then back cuts",  "tick tack toe no trade backs", and "if the teacher doesn't show up 10 minutes after the bell, then the class is canceled"?  It's not like there's a school administrator who's been there for decades who always drills these sayings into every new 1st-grade class.  Moreover, aren't such retorts / sayings common across the country?
