Remastered Albums that improve on the original

Forums:

Postem if you gottem, I'll start.

Last night (on Tidal), I listened to the Talking Heads remastered album True Stories and was blown away by it. I feel it really improved upon the original which is one of my favorite TH's albums.

Here is a link to it on YouTube:  https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_lF587YBs7uv5Sd82GCRSQPpaNJeX5MvBo

If the title is already in my collection; is usually gonna at least get an upgrade audition on my system

"Remastered" really has 100% to do with the engineer and specific format and 0% to do with the album title

Best/most common popular music example off the top of my head are the Van Halen studio albums redone by CB in 2015. Most excellent, 100% improvement.

obviously there are lots of great mastering engineers out there, those are just my personal top 3. Most kind of have their own "sound", so it takes some careful attention (and sometimes some homework too) to really understand what you're hearing, what you like, and who did the work.

 YMMV

For example:

True Stories first USA LP release (1986) was originally digitally mastered by Jack Skinner st Sterling Sound in NYC

The 2009 remasters of this album were completed by Ryan Smith and Ted Jensen (both tip-top engineers) again at Sterling; with one of them turning knobs on the stereo version and the other on the surround version

There is also a recent (2009 or 1011, unsure) CD/DVD remaster (surround sound version) remixed by Jerry Harrison and then also remastered by Ted Jensen

And I would think there will likely be a (new, different) 40th anniversary remastered reissue in the coming years

i would guess the third is what you heard on tidal. Maybe they give you some of that info if you dig into it, maybe they don't. I've never used tidal.

People seem pretty happy with the remastered editions of Black Sabbath's Technical Ecstasy and Live Heaven And Hell records.

When Miles Davis' Kind Of Blue album got remastered in 1996, it was discovered that a whole side of the original master was mastered at the wrong speed.

There was a factory
Now there are mountains and rivers,   You got it, you got it

We caught a rattlesnake
Now we got something for dinner,   We got it, we got it

There was a shopping mall
Now it's all covered with flowers   You've got it, you've got it

Once there were parking lots
Now it's a peaceful oasis   You've got it, you've got it

This was a Pizza Hut
Now it's all covered with daisies   You got it, you got it

I miss the honky tonks,
Dairy Queens, and 7-Elevens   You got it, you got it

And as things fell apart
Nobody paid much attention   You got it, you got it

I dream of cherry pies,
Candy bars, and chocolate chip cookies   You got it, you got it

We used to microwave
Now we just eat nuts and berries   You got it, you got it

This was a discount store,
Now it's turned into a cornfield   You've got it, you've got it

Don't leave me stranded here
I can't get used to this lifestyle

I have the Beatles disc set - original version. I've never really heard the remastered set of discs- is it worth upgrading? How many versions are there?

My remastered Mars Hotel CD (the first one; not the "expanded and remastered" one) is missing Jerry's first three guitar notes on USBlues.

surfdead: Is this your box? Does this help you any? You can scroll past the track listings to see all of the invididual countries and formats that were made

https://www.discogs.com/release/4672819-The-Beatles-The-Beatles-Box-Set

if you scroll down further still, you will note some peanut gallery type comments on various releases that can sometimes provide sonic info

beyond that; it's basically find a copy and audition it

Thanks Bss. I'll check it out. Then hopefully I'll know which (if any) I need to check out with my ears.
