Yeah. In the grand scheme of things, switching to a plant based diet and avoiding factory farmed animal products will go a lot further in helping the environment than not getting a plastic thingy with your sugary drink.
than not getting a plastic thingy with your sugary drink<<<
Perhaps this raises another issue re: The People's Republic of Boulder and their zeal to target "sugary drinks" and I would suspect are also mounting a push for the elimination of straws. Are people who use straws with sugary drinks are better off than those who don't re: lessening the potential for tooth decay?
Unless this is just a giant scheme by ned -- who's shipping said discarded xmas trees to Mexico where they're refabbed into wooden straws with very cheap labor?
also, it is best practice to basically NOT use plastic wherever you can.
years ago my kids' HS surf class lobbied the newport beach city council for a styrofoam ban on take out food. they got it passed in one of the most conservative cities in one of the most conservative counties in the USA...
I used to volunteer for Lake Merritt (Oakland) clean up every Saturday for a few years. Wayyyy too many straws and cigarette butts wash down into that "lake."
Little steps in the right direction are better than not doing anything positive at all.
At the very least, people who use straws should make an effort to dispose of them properly.
Steak's yummy, but I probably eat it 2-4 times per year. I think that it's more of a cheapskate thing on my end more than anything else...
My sister & me would always launch the paper straw-wrapper to unknown neighbors' booths in restaurants, back when we were 20-somethings. Mom & Pop would get mad.
Personally I just loved those "Crazy Straws" which, to explain for the younger generation, were these Fractal-Helix straws made of thick plastic, reusable and High - Tech.
Well Mars, if ya wanna make a big deal out of every environmental contradiction...it's easy to do.
There's lots of contradictions in this world, like "patriots" who support free speech in America, well, most the time.
Been noticing this at restaurants lately. Fact is dropping two plastic straws at the table is SOP, and they are mostly unneeded and never asked for, by us at least.
Got told by one server after they're on the table and out of their sight, they can't take 'em back. So we have to hand 'em back to the server as soon as they drop them.
Pain in the ass to have to pay attention to this. Seems like an odd practice to me, dropping unneeded plastic straws that weren't asked for.
Not a big deal, but if I can help bring about change on this habit, I'll do it.
Well Mars, if ya wanna make a big deal out of every environmental contradiction...it's easy to do<<<
True enough, re: being easy to do; however, at what point do inconsistencies become just another form of "interpersonal green washing"?
Look at it this way: say you are out of cash, but need $10 for gas and are running late to pick up your kids after school. You realize you haven't cashed in your piggy bank full of change, so you quickly dump it onto the floor. Let me guess, you scan and gather up all the quarters first?
I have never ever been a victim of the straw paper landing on my plate.<<<
What about some kid who holds the straw near your ear after having twisted the straw from both ends, then flicks the center portion with his finger making a loud "pop"?
