i saw a phish run in philly in fall 2010, second night we all ate a bunch of L, come out of the show and its is the most intense fog i have ever seen. you couldn't see 2 feet in front of you, really cool, especially tripping.
but i must've leaned on my oven before we left, and turned the pilot dial-so from about 6pm till 1am gas was leaking in my apartment. i lived in an aparment building as well, really bad. haha. so when my gf, my brother and myself landed back in northish philly, we could literally see the thick layers of gas floating in the apartment. quite shocking. opned the windows and ran outside hahahaha. aw man, terrible. no cheesesteaks that night.

Does John's have more than one shop? The google images look really good but a few look like name brand size sandwiches they sell at tourist spots.

I did a little cheesesteak
I did a little cheesesteak tour when I was in Philadelphia for the Phish Mann shows in 2016. I didn't bother with Pat's or Geno's as I had them several years back and was not at all impressed by either tourist trap. My favorite ended up being Phillip's Steaks on Passyunk Ave. My mouth is watering just thinking about the place.

Think I chimed in on the last
Think I chimed in on the last three threads about the mysterious "Philly cheesesteak". They are everywhere! Most folks in the area just go to their local pizza/hoagie/cheeseteak joint. That is all you really need to get the experience. If you visit, ask a local. They will not say Pat's or Geno's. Wit Wiz? please no, gross. Those are just the ones that get covered on TV. Maybe TL's. But honestly if you stay with someone, just ask where they go in their neighborhood. That's what the bulk of people in the Philadelphia area do. We don't drive down to Pat's at 2 am. Its very common to order "a chesesteak, Fried onions and ketchup" too. American cheese is the norm or provolone if feeling fancy.

There is/was another one near
There is/was another one near Pat's and Geno's which (in my hazy recollection) was better than either, not too difficult. One afternoon a pal & I did the trifecta, consuming one Cheese Steak from each outfit. Would have been around 1990, when my metabolism was higher.
The great thing about Pat's was not the greasy food, but the visual qualities of the florescent lights illuminating the vat of molten Cheez Wiz.
Geno's has the iconic "Dis is America, Speak - a English" sign upon the wall, plus the lavish hot-pepper and omion bar.
Locally (Central Jerseyland) my fave spot is 'Ninuzzo's' for the Cheese Steak; they are just a notch or so above the nearby competition. Slightly better Cow cuts, excellent rolls, portobella shrooms, and the omions are grilled to perfection. They do a brisk trade in take-out, but also have a very nice 'Fine Dining' area with $30 + entrees and a decent wine list.
No Roast Pork sandwich, unfortunately. A similar Italian place near Dog Park has a good one w/ Broccoli Rabe. Same physical model; fine-dining area w/ good wine list and take-out in front. Those guys also have a tiny seating area for the slice-an-a-Coke folks near the takeout window.

The best for my $$. My buddy had an apartment in the late 80's early 90's that was five minutes away on foot. Stayed over there a few times after Dead shows @ the Spectrum. Jim's was a must!

A couple of years ago we were flying somewhere, and we had layovers in Philly on both the way there and back.
The way there was an older terminal, and the cheesesteak in the terminal was better than anything you can get in VT. On the return, we were in the brand new terminal, and went into the Tony Luke’s, where I got a roast pork. Holy shit, it was delicious!
