This was back during the Cold War, when it was important to indoctrinate kids into the military and prepare them to fight the commies in World War lll.
Hey guys. I would really prefer that none of the old pinko peacenik hippie zoners post on my 80's cartoon thread. You simply aren't qualified to contribute to this topic.
Anyway, Thundercats was another classic. Lots of weird shit happening in that one.
These may be more 70's but I liked Hong Kong Phoeey , Superfriends & Scooby-Do. I also liked the chaos of The Banana Splits. I watched but was frustrated by Lost in Time? They went down some drano river hole and ended up in prehistoric times & couldn't ever get back. I watched Lost In Space too but it freaked me out more than liking it. I also used to get really upset that no one on a Sesame Street except for Big Bird could see Snuffleupagus...really bothered me a lot! LoL
Yeah, so like, my favorite 80s cartoons were the Smurfs and Inspector Gadget. I went through a Muppet Babies phase, too, which I'm comfortable admitting to the group.
I really didn't watch many 80s cartoons. I collected Smurfs in the 70s and watched that a bit. I had a crush on a chick in junior high, and her father's company produced He Man and Sheera, so I tried to watch that crap but couldn't really do it. Then, in the late 80s, TMNT turned out to be quality viewing when really fucked up.
I was in Montreal Quebec for most of the 80's, had a little portable TV first year in the dorm. It got one or two English-speaking channels. The TV in a downstairs lounge got more channels but I don't recall watching any cartoons.
70's I watched all the classics: Pink Panther, Wacky Racers, Rocky & Bullwinkle, Scooby-Doo, all the Loony Tunes stable. Think there were even Beatle and Monkee cartoons and maybe a Jackson 5 as well?
Then there were some pretty cheesy ones like 'Magilla Gorilla' and 'El Kabong'.
And sorry you're so fucking offended by all of us old deadheads talking about the good ole days.
But the grateful dead family was the best and for some, the only family that many of us had.<<<
RRG, that Telluride thread brought back some great memories of that mini-tour. I called the old friend today that was there also, we both make an effort to status update every few years.
We talked how those years were the best days of our lives.
We only talked for ten minutes and that was enough to know that one of the few life long friends/family is still there.
I'm fascinated, E. Gummi Juice is actually more like meth than drank!
From Wiki:
Gummiberry Juice is a concoction formulated using Gummiberries by the Gummi Bears, with the recipe known only by Grammi Gummi until she later taught it to Sunni Gummi. The juice is produced by adding six handfuls of red berries, then four orange berries, three purple berries, four blue berries, three green berries and one yellow berry. The recipe ends with the 3-step-stir; first stir slow to the right, then slow to the left, then tap the pot to banish the bubbles.[16]
Gummi Bears gain the ability to bounce at unusual heights for a limited amount of time; falling from heights which would normally be fatal to a Gummi will only cause them to bounce like rubber. The ability to direct themselves while powered by the juice, such as bouncing along the ground, is not instinctive to Gummi Bears and must be learned, as the Barbic Gummis quickly find out.
Ogres and humans both gain super strength for a similar amount of time. Drinking too much Gummiberry Juice has unforeseen side effects on the consumer (Toadie was sent streaking skywards like a firework after downing a whole cask), and the abilities gained from drinking the juice can only be used by humans once per day. With this in mind, Cavin and Calla only drink the juice if asked to do so by the Gummi Bears, and if given a dose for later, will only drink it in an emergency.
If the juice is produced inaccurately from the recipe, the results are adverse outcomes, though nothing fatal.[16] In Season 1, Episode 14 - 'The Secret of the Juice', Grammi Gummi tries to teach Sunni Gummi for the first time how to make the juice. Grammi performs the three-step-stir successfully like she always does, but when it's Sunni's turn, it ends in disaster. She stirs the pot too vigorously and then bangs it too hard, causing the pot of unstable juice to somehow explode, covering Sunni, Grammi and the entire kitchen in juice (Toadie makes a similar mistake at the end of the episode, distracting Igthorn's ogres and allowing the Gummis to escape). In one episode, an incorrect juice resulted in pink fur, but when poured in water, creates a pink sleeping mist that Igthorn once tried to use.
"The group consists of three singing animated anthropomorphic chipmunks: Alvin, the mischievous troublemaker, who quickly became the star of the group; Simon, the tall, bespectacled intellectual; and Theodore, the chubby, impressionable one."
I was just about to bring up 80's Alvin and the chipmunks, mark.
anyone remember that very special episode where they brought down the Berlin Wall?
Also, Radical find, Brian k!
u aren't very off with your meth equivalency assessment; everybody was getting all kinds of cranked out that gummi drank.
some even conspiracize the stuff was deliberately manufactured and distributed to animated communities by the CIA under the Reagan administration for purposes of keeping our cartoon bears down.
>>>>When you get down to it - the >>Big bad internet little boys<< don't really care about anyone but themselves.
Not true, as children of the 80's we also care about heavy metal, Nintendo, and sticking it to Gorbachev
Damn RRG, that's some heavy shit that went down in your family. Not sure how it relates to 80s cartoons, super dark cartoons weren't really popular till the 90s. Glad you were able to walk it off yesterday and come back trolling strong this morning. Keep up the good work.
>>>>anyone remember that very special episode where they brought down the Berlin Wall?
I don't remember that one, E; but the anti-communist propaganda the social engineers of the 80's were weaving into the very fabric of our childhoods was obviously highly effective.
That's how we beat those red bastards and won the goddamn Cold War. You're welcome, freedom.
Does anybody remember that Garfield strip where he & Odie lead an invasion in to Cuba and give the Cuban people a taste of freedom by dropping lasagna from CIA cargo plans?
Toons in the 80s seemed to be really different than in the 70s. A lot of weird product tie-ins, different themes and definitely a different type of violence.
I have nothing to add about cartoons of the '80s, and reading this thread gives me no motivation to re-visit any mentioned.
As for my childhood & cartoons, as someone born in 1960 I also was a Loony Toons kid. The superior quality of the animation and writing continue to make them the best cartoons of all time IMO.
The only cartoon show that I really liked that was current during my childhood was the Rocky & Bullwinkle show that included the Sherman & Mr. Peabody & Dudley Do-Right characters and also had Fractured Fairy Tales (which I really liked).
I was mildly amused by the Hannah Barbara cartoons of the time like the Flintstones, Jetsons, Yogi Bear, Magilla Gorilla & Scooby Doo, but as the animation and story lines got less & less interesting I became less & less interested in cartoons by the time Scooby Doo was popular so I was pretty much off cartoons by the time I was ten.
I did like Fat Albert & The Cosby Kids in the '70s, mostly because during the '60s I was a big fan of the Bill Cosby comedy records that included his Fat Albert stories.
Imagine a cartoon in this day & age featuring a black child called Fat Albert. Not very PC, that's for sure.
Those old Cosby records were pretty damn funny though.
Pardon the interuption, and carry on now with your reminiscences of inferior cartoons from the '80s.
(BTW Mark, I'm looking forward to heading out later today to Vanilla Stadium to see your Broncos take on my 49ers. I'm hoping the 49ers won't be a 21st century cartoon this year)
Awesome, Lance. Have fun today, man. I'm looking forward to seeing what young Shanahan can do for the 49ers this season. Dude is a legit offensive mastermind, like his dad. Hopefully it translates to the new role.
>>>The superior quality of the animation and writing continue to make them the best cartoons of all time IMO.
Agreed. There's Loony Toons, and then there's all other cartoons.
ha ha. There were very few cartoons that were good in the 80's. Maybe ren n stimpy. But then again, I was traveling around with some nice folks most of that decade.
If I'm not mistaken the legendary zone HOFer Northernlites used to rail on him constantly in the folder.
I appreciate that 6 doesn't go to the gutter when he's exchanging with his nemeses Mark & Timmy. It makes for amusing zoning, not just brain-dead gutter level name-calling.
(And sorry 6, while I like you as a zoner, I think you lost that bet. You should own up to that)
I'm so glad my kids are past that shit. I had to deal with a lot of the Nick shows though.
Last week I made my daughter turn off the new "That's so Raven," which she was watching for nostalgia? WTF, you're 18 and the original sucked. Turn that shit off!
Mark, I had the Boulder Hill MASK playset. Wish I still had that thing. Had most of the vehicles and characters too. Shit sells for good money on eBay these days.
I feel like this thread has really helped shine a light on our generation, and some of the formative experiences we had that helped make us so incredibly awesome.
RRG ~ I hope to meet you someday! I want you to know that there's no weirdness here from me besides getting weird at shows in the "best tradition".
I am laid up presently as I just had surgery on an injured knee, but I will be back to seeing shows here in northeastern OH area as soon as I can go safely again. Email me please so I can chat with you offline about sending you some tunes. Thanks ahead of time & peace! Fark
>>>I feel like this thread has really helped shine a light on our generation
I think it's fascinating that through this thread we've discovered a cartoon toy based economy was largely responsible for the financial boom of the 80's

I'm fascinated, E. Gummi

I have nothing to add about
I have nothing to add about cartoons of the '80s, and reading this thread gives me no motivation to re-visit any mentioned.
