Favorite 80's Cartoons

Forums:

I was a big G.I. Joe fan.

This was back during the Cold War, when it was important to indoctrinate kids into the military and prepare them to fight the commies in World War lll.

The toy line was also amazing.

Explains a lot.

I never played with dolls.

Liono I don't think this is a friendly place,, ((snarf, snarf))

Smurfs

Superfriends

Scooby Doo

I was not allowed to watch cartoons when I was a kid.

When I did sneak a peak it was Scooby Doo for sure.

The New adventures of Mighty Mouse

ralph bakshi did it. cbs execs had no idea how much sex and drug humor they were tossing at the kiddos on Saturday morning

>>gi joe

that's just sad, and explains so much

Grateful Dead tour.

Hey guys. I would really prefer that none of the old pinko peacenik hippie zoners post on my 80's cartoon thread. You simply aren't qualified to contribute to this topic.

Anyway, Thundercats was another classic. Lots of weird shit happening in that one.

I got your pinko Thundercat right heah.

Thanks RRG. You are welcome to post comments on the 80's here.

Your authority on all things 80's is unquestioned.

Much like your authority on khakis.

I hear that look is all the rage with the little trumpkins.

(((pleats)))

Can't say I own a pair of "khakis", RRG.

Let's talk about your history with hairspray and fringe leather jackets.

I have a hard time remembering the 80's but can recall seeing a bunch of the cartoon shows in syndication in the early 90's.

was way into he-man but that's probably cause it was just clever marketing for the toys.

as shows, transformers and g.i. Joe held up much better over time.

never really watched Jem but from what I understand it was truly outrageous.

I enjoyed dangermouse.

were those animated hobbit movies from the 80's or late 70's?

 those things were the bomb!

Transformers was a great show. I was sad when they ruined it with the shitty Michael Bay movies.

Anybody remember Go Bots? Second tier Transformers for poor kids. They sold the toys in the supermarket.

No Mark, we don't remember Go Bots.

I DO remember when these guys first showed up....

Simpsons_on_Tracey_Ullman.png

Those Michael bay movies r an abomination.

even the latter day Dinobot tv show era holds up pretty well and the animated movie is classic!

orson wells as unicron is compelling.

Love the animated Transformers film, E.

I wasn't addressing the old Zoners with that post, RRG.

Transformers was a great show.

M.A.S.K. is an underrated show from the era.

Also, you really ate shit over on your troll thread, RRG. You can hang out here and chat about cartoons until it blows over.

Naw, its funner to watch you get upset

When someone hits the ball back into your court.

Yeah. I'm running at a 4.6 here; maybe even a 4.7

Those corny lot shirts you posted were more than I could take.

I saw my morning jacket the other day,

Does that make me cool?

Oh and so you know a little bit about me...

I never used hairspray..and dont wear make up.

I have also been a vegetarian since 1985.

Also Never smoked cigarettes.

And I saw a fuck load of grateful dead and jerry garcia band shows.

I bet you were 10 when i was hitchinking around the country..solo.

No, i bet you were 5.

And sorry you're so fucking offended by all of us old deadheads talking about the good ole days.

But the grateful dead family was the best and for some, the only family that many of us had.

Sorry your priveledged khaki wearing ass cant grasp that concept.

Now kindly go fuck yourself,

Nobody watched Robotech? I think it was on just before the

Iran/Contra/Ollie North hearing.

Sweet little meltdown from RRG in here.

This thread is actually about cartoons from the 80's tho.

>>>Sweet little meltdown from RRG in here.

And I thought Jem was truly outrageous

No love for Ninja Turtles?

These may be more 70's but I liked Hong Kong Phoeey , Superfriends & Scooby-Do. I also liked the chaos of The Banana Splits. I watched but was frustrated by Lost in Time? They went down some drano river hole and ended up in prehistoric times & couldn't ever get back. I watched Lost In Space too but it freaked me out more than liking it. I also used to get really upset that no one on a Sesame Street except for Big Bird could see Snuffleupagus...really bothered me a lot! LoL

Yeah, so like, my favorite 80s cartoons were the Smurfs and Inspector Gadget. I went through a Muppet Babies phase, too, which I'm comfortable admitting to the group.

Inspector Gadget was a great show.

The Smurfs had some strong pro-drug undertones that I didn't understand as a kid. Lotta weird shit happening in that village.

Not a bad thread

>>>>>>Inspector Gadget was a great show.

The reboot on Netflix is alright.

Found a Gummi Bears torrent.  The kids have been enjoying it.

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disney%27s_Adventures_of_the_Gummi_Bears

Holy shit!

i forgot all about that gummi bears show

I remember the Go Bots.

The motorcycle Go Bot was pretty legit.

He was no Soundwave, but still pretty solid

<<<<>>>>>All she has done is offer you a place to post.

But you little losers cant be decent enough humans to rspect

What she has given you.

So keep on pushing until this place closes too kids.

Strong fucking work boys...pat yourselves on the back.

<<<<>>>>

lol, what exactly has judit given us? hilarious

ninja turtles

duck tales

smurfs

care bears

inspector gadget

although, i watched all of these in the 90s haha.

TMNT was great.

I didn't bother with the reboot movie. Some things are too sacred.

I really didn't watch many 80s cartoons. I collected Smurfs in the 70s and watched that a bit. I had a crush on a chick in junior high, and her father's company produced He Man and Sheera, so I tried to watch that crap but couldn't really do it. Then, in the late 80s, TMNT turned out to be quality viewing when really fucked up.

The best thing to come out of ninja turtles was that konami arcade game

I was in Montreal Quebec for most of the 80's,  had a little portable TV first year in the dorm.  It got one or two English-speaking channels.  The TV in a downstairs lounge got more channels but I don't recall watching any cartoons.

70's I watched all the classics:  Pink Panther,  Wacky Racers,  Rocky & Bullwinkle,  Scooby-Doo,  all the Loony Tunes stable.  Think there were even Beatle and Monkee cartoons  and maybe a Jackson 5 as well?

Then there were some pretty cheesy ones like 'Magilla Gorilla'  and 'El Kabong'.

>>>The best thing to come out of ninja turtles was that konami arcade game

The four player team option was pretty amazing.

I see Mark had a cow in this thread.

Don't have a cow, Mark.

You're doing that thing, Six.

Stop doing that thing.

Stop telling me what to do.

You're not my mother.

You're still doing it.

yawn

I need to interrupt this love fest to verify that there was a Gummi Bears cartoon. Really?

Not the candy, Brian.

just some wacky animated bears trying to capitalize on the name.

they'd often imbibe some sassy gummi drank that made them jump around and gave'em super strength or some shit.

Sounds kind of trippy.

I have to ask, though, what the hell did they do with their super strength? Beat up Swedish Fish?

No, Bri.

As epic as that battle for chewy, fruity junk food supremacy would've been, this program had nothing to do with the candy.

i cannot recall who the exact antagonist was, but them bears needed that gummi drank.

that much I am sure of.

Reading the heartfelt words and history of RRG in that last post, it is hard to see no sympathy, condolences or human feeling in response

Facing your town right now RRG and sending warm and healing thoughts. So wonderful how you have become a nurse/healer

Sorry for the sad history that you have written about  You have risen above ....

I'm with you, Nod.

Much love to you, RRG heart

And thanks to Judit and the whole admin team for putting up with us.

Yup, Big Whole lotta Love to RRG.

The '80s were a long time ago. Mark is reminiscing about the old days.

Welcome to our world Mark.

RRG, much love to you, and thanks.

roses on paper.jpg

And sorry you're so fucking offended by all of us old deadheads talking about the good ole days.

But the grateful dead family was the best and for some, the only family that many of us had.<<<

RRG, that Telluride thread brought back some great memories of that mini-tour. I called the old friend today that was there also, we both make an effort to status update every few years.

We talked how those years were the best days of our lives.

We only talked for ten minutes and that was enough to know that one of the few life long friends/family is still there.

We good for another few years.

Get some onya,RRG.

wow 80s cartoons sucked compared to the 60s/70s.

Weren't there like 2 different ghostbusters cartoon series in the late 80's, one similar to the movies, one just weird and zany?

Battle of the Planets/ G Force, made for grade school water cooler talk in the early 80's.

Hmm, things are not working out well for the OP in this thread.

>>it is hard to see no sympathy, condolences or human feeling in response

When you get down to it - the >>Big bad internet little boys<< don't really care about anyone but themselves.

I'm fascinated, E. Gummi Juice is actually more like meth than drank!

From Wiki:

Gummiberry Juice is a concoction formulated using Gummiberries by the Gummi Bears, with the recipe known only by Grammi Gummi until she later taught it to Sunni Gummi. The juice is produced by adding six handfuls of red berries, then four orange berries, three purple berries, four blue berries, three green berries and one yellow berry. The recipe ends with the 3-step-stir; first stir slow to the right, then slow to the left, then tap the pot to banish the bubbles.[16]

Gummi Bears gain the ability to bounce at unusual heights for a limited amount of time; falling from heights which would normally be fatal to a Gummi will only cause them to bounce like rubber. The ability to direct themselves while powered by the juice, such as bouncing along the ground, is not instinctive to Gummi Bears and must be learned, as the Barbic Gummis quickly find out.

Ogres and humans both gain super strength for a similar amount of time. Drinking too much Gummiberry Juice has unforeseen side effects on the consumer (Toadie was sent streaking skywards like a firework after downing a whole cask), and the abilities gained from drinking the juice can only be used by humans once per day. With this in mind, Cavin and Calla only drink the juice if asked to do so by the Gummi Bears, and if given a dose for later, will only drink it in an emergency.

If the juice is produced inaccurately from the recipe, the results are adverse outcomes, though nothing fatal.[16] In Season 1, Episode 14 - 'The Secret of the Juice', Grammi Gummi tries to teach Sunni Gummi for the first time how to make the juice. Grammi performs the three-step-stir successfully like she always does, but when it's Sunni's turn, it ends in disaster. She stirs the pot too vigorously and then bangs it too hard, causing the pot of unstable juice to somehow explode, covering Sunni, Grammi and the entire kitchen in juice (Toadie makes a similar mistake at the end of the episode, distracting Igthorn's ogres and allowing the Gummis to escape). In one episode, an incorrect juice resulted in pink fur, but when poured in water, creates a pink sleeping mist that Igthorn once tried to use.

Thanks for the kind words and thoughts folks heart

I spent the day in reflection yesterday, and feel much better today.

And on this Saturday morning I made a nice pot of Coffee

and reflected on our collective Saturday Morning cartoon experiences...

what a carefree and fun time that was....

Then I  thought of Mark in his Jammies watching this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EX_9jKFpQKM

Maybe we can send St. Mark some vibes too....

best saturday wishes, RRG...and all

i never stopped watching looney tunes...so, no time for any 80 s cartoons, but, i did fall in love w jessica rabbit if that counts....what a toon!

in honor, i will watch Johnny Quest this a.m....and maybe some Tom and Jerry

Poor Mark. I hope he has a better day today.

What about Alvin & The Chipmunks?

"The group consists of three singing animated anthropomorphic chipmunks: Alvin, the mischievous troublemaker, who quickly became the star of the group; Simon, the tall, bespectacled intellectual; and Theodore, the chubby, impressionable one."

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alvin_and_the_Chipmunks

>>>>>The recipe ends with the 3-step

Read as: "The recipe ends with the 3-strip"

Lol.

I was just about to bring up 80's Alvin and the chipmunks, mark.

anyone remember that very special episode where they brought down the Berlin Wall?

Also, Radical find, Brian k!

u aren't very off with your meth equivalency assessment; everybody was getting all kinds of cranked out that gummi drank.

some even conspiracize the stuff was deliberately manufactured and distributed to animated communities by the CIA under the Reagan administration for purposes of keeping our cartoon bears down.

>>>>When you get down to it - the >>Big bad internet little boys<< don't really care about anyone but themselves.

Not true, as children of the 80's we also care about heavy metal, Nintendo, and sticking it to Gorbachev

....sticking it to Gorbachev.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhCIuxBBN6o

this might take more vibes than we thought guys.....

((((((put a little wowzers in your trousers))))

The Hair Bear Bunch, back in the 70s, was on the reefers, and maybe some H here and there. I don't know if I want my cartoons to be tweaking.

I still remember the time that Gargamel called Smurfette a "meddling wench." It was a lot to take in.

Damn RRG, that's some heavy shit that went down in your family.  Not sure how it relates to 80s cartoons, super dark cartoons weren't really popular till the 90s.  Glad you were able to walk it off yesterday and come back trolling strong this morning.  Keep up the good work.

The 80's were a pretty fucked up decade, Bri.

Robotech had a lot of love. And complicated love triangles.

Thanks Timmy heart

I do find that I troll my best in the early morning hours.

ive heard it was quite the saga.

was it anything like gundam?

I was on the older side of Gen X, so I could retreat to the comfort of hard drugs to get me through the decade.

 >>>>anyone remember that very special episode where they brought down the Berlin Wall?

I don't remember that one, E; but the anti-communist propaganda the social engineers of the 80's were weaving into the very fabric of our childhoods was obviously highly effective.

That's how we beat those red bastards and won the goddamn Cold War. You're welcome, freedom.

Never saw gundam but it looks similar.

Hearts & minds, folks.

Excerpt from the chipmunks 1988 'the wall':

suck it, roger waters

Powerful stuff, E.

Does anybody remember that Garfield strip where he & Odie lead an invasion in to Cuba and give the Cuban people a taste of freedom by dropping lasagna from CIA cargo plans?

How about the Dungeons and Dragons cartoon?

I agree with Turtle again...

was still watching reruns of Underdog, Felix the Cat, etc in the 70s. Was pretty much done with cartoons in the 80s (until the Simpsons came along...)

Although ren and stimpy debuted in 91, it was a good one.

as for the cartoons in this thread, I think inspector gadget was my favorite.

how about the jetsons?  Was that mentioned?

Jetsons was 60s or early 70s.

Toons in the 80s seemed to be really different than in the 70s. A lot of weird product tie-ins, different themes and definitely a different type of violence.

Flinstones?

Just looked it up. Flintstones was 60-66 and Jetsons was 62-63. Even Pebbles and Bamm Bamm was early 70s.

The replayed both forever

Sigmund the Sea Monster was my all time favorite, followed by Land of the Lost and then HR Puffnstuff.

There are a few Land of the Lost episodes that haunt me to this day.

reruns of old cartoons

my son saw Daffy Duck kill Hitler thanks to Disco Stu VHS National Archive.

>I agree with Turtle again...<

kinda hard not to. :)

Exactly. Turtle is 100% right on this subject and to not agree with him is silly.

Take your flaccid beta male troll attempts to another thread, Six.

You clearly have nothing to contribute to the subject here.

Krang!

I'm making the Willy Wonka face at you, Mark.

I bet it's the Willy Wonka from the 70's.

Fucking right it is.

It's not 21 Jumpaloompa Street..

Don't you besmirch Johnny Depp in my cartoon thread, Six.

I have nothing to add about cartoons of the '80s, and reading this thread gives me no motivation to re-visit any mentioned.

As for my childhood & cartoons, as someone born in 1960 I also was a Loony Toons kid. The superior quality of the animation and writing continue to make them the best cartoons of all time IMO.

The only cartoon show that I really liked that was current during my childhood was the Rocky & Bullwinkle show that included the Sherman & Mr. Peabody & Dudley Do-Right characters and also had Fractured Fairy Tales (which I really liked).

I was mildly amused by the Hannah Barbara cartoons of the time like the Flintstones, Jetsons, Yogi Bear, Magilla Gorilla & Scooby Doo, but as the animation and story lines got less & less interesting I became less & less interested in cartoons by the time Scooby Doo was popular so I was pretty much off cartoons by the time I was ten.

I did like Fat Albert & The Cosby Kids in the '70s, mostly because during the '60s I was a big fan of the Bill Cosby comedy records that included his Fat Albert stories.

Imagine a cartoon in this day & age featuring a black child called Fat Albert. Not very PC, that's for sure.

Those old Cosby records were pretty damn funny though.

Pardon the interuption, and carry on now with your reminiscences of inferior cartoons from the '80s.

(BTW Mark, I'm looking forward to heading out later today to Vanilla Stadium to see your Broncos take on my 49ers. I'm hoping the 49ers won't be a 21st century cartoon this year)

Awesome, Lance. Have fun today, man. I'm looking forward to seeing what young Shanahan can do for the 49ers this season. Dude is a legit offensive mastermind, like his dad. Hopefully it translates to the new role.

>>>The superior quality of the animation and writing continue to make them the best cartoons of all time IMO.

Agreed. There's Loony Toons, and then there's all other cartoons.

flintstones was 60s, but replayed though 80s(at least) .. (i was born 77)

back in the "columbia house" craze, i scored a bunch of "sign up" sets..flinstones was an option..i was happy about that :)

FLINTSTONES was (and is)  always  favorite

ha ha. There were very few cartoons that were good in the 80's. Maybe ren n stimpy. But then again, I was traveling around with some nice folks most of that decade.

and I agree with RRG posts.

Now Samurai Jack, thats good stuff.

Gosh darn it! It's almost as if I didn't care.

How long have you been Zoning that you are such an expert on how it is done correctly?

>>>6 doesn't understand zoning.

It's hard to watch, isn't it? In some ways, I blame myself.

what else ya wanna know ?

Hey, how about that My Little Pony cartoon. Wasn't it awesome?

6 has been zoning a long time.

If I'm not mistaken the legendary zone HOFer Northernlites used to rail on him constantly in the folder.

I appreciate that 6 doesn't go to the gutter when he's exchanging with his nemeses Mark & Timmy. It makes for amusing zoning, not just brain-dead gutter level name-calling.

(And sorry 6, while I like you as a zoner, I think you lost that bet. You should own up to that)

agree across the board lance !

((almost))

>>>Hey, how about that My Little Pony cartoon. Wasn't it awesome?

it was no Care Bears, Brian

fuck, it might not even have been as good as strawberry shortcake

Oh, but what was as good as Strawberry Shortcake? Surely not the Cabbage Patch Kids.

Did those little godless, lettuce-spawned, zombie bastards have their own cartoons as well?

damn, nearly every 80's cartoon was produced for the sole purpose of marketing toys.

there was even a fairly popular teddy ruxspin cartoon for a while.

I just looked it up. Not only was there a TV show, there was a Christmas movie!

Both pac man and Mario bros. had 80's cartoons

Cartoons became long commercials for toys in the 80s and the trend continues today with the goddamned Paw Patrol.

I'm so glad my kids are past that shit. I had to deal with a lot of the Nick shows though.

Last week I made my daughter turn off the new "That's so Raven," which she was watching for nostalgia? WTF, you're 18 and the original sucked. Turn that shit off!

That was so unraven of u, Bri

Timmy, will will please start a thread when Paw Patrol defeats ISIS?

>>>Don't forget about winning that goddamn Cold War .

We were gonna beat them through capitalism, mark.

those toy based cartoons were just an extension of that.

it was basic Reaganomics

Thom just got a little chubby.

You're doing good work in this one, E.

Peppa Pig was funny.

Phineas and Ferb was funny.

Pat The Dog is funny.

The Lego Star Wars stuff is great.

I honestly had no idea that there were all those cartoon commercials. I guess I can see why grunge became so popular.

Sorry E but I need to disagree about Reganomics.  The basics of that are if we take in less money (taxes) we'll have more money.

Turns out it was just as stupid as it sounds and George Bush even said so before he was tapped for the VP slot.

What you're referring to is advanced Reganomics, not basic.

Mark, I had the Boulder Hill MASK playset.  Wish I still had that thing.  Had most of the vehicles and characters too.  Shit sells for good money on eBay these days.

I wonder if the USSR had better cartoons if things would be different today.

DuckTales is getting a reboot. Excited for that. We've been reading Donald and Scrooge comics.

I feel like this thread has really helped shine a light on our generation, and some of the formative experiences we had that helped make us so incredibly awesome.

at least 75%, pretty sure I've seen damn near that exact menu at a collective before.

Speaking of which, Arthur was the Bomb.
