Just had the opportunity to play with a pedal steel player. What a game changer. I loved having that in the mix. Any zoner psg players or recommendations?
I was just reading the history of the pedal steel. Began in Hawaii as a lap slide in the late 1800's. Weissenborn built a dedicated lap slide in the 1920s, Rickenbacker made it electric in the 30s. Leo Fender improved it in the 50s.
Guys put legs on it so they could stand and then pedals were added. Refinements continue to this day.
A master of improvisation for nearly four decades, Steve Kimock has been inspiring music fans with his transcendent guitar speak, voiced through electric, acoustic, lap and pedal steel guitars. While one can say that his genre is rock, no one niche has ever confined him. Instead, through the years, he’s explored various sounds and styles based on what’s moved him at the time, whether it’s blues or jazz; funk or folk; psychedelic or boogie; gypsy or prog-rock; traditional American or world fusion.
I've always loved Paul Niehaus, who played with Lambchop, Calexico, Justin Townes Earle and others. His style is more atmospheric flowing than classic country, but he can get a great sound out of that great instrument...
I break it down to which side of the Mississippi River. On the Eastern side I have two favorites of all time. Buddy Emmons and Lloyd Green. West of the Mississippi I give that top spot to Bobby Black. Herby Wallace out of Saint Louis is in the pedal steel hall of fame and rightfully so! The man owned that complicated instrument.
Yes Herb Remington and also Herbie Wallace were Giants of the pedal steel. That ZB Custom Jerry is playing here was bought at Scotty's Music in Saint Louis. "The steel guitar Capitol of the world." He would hit that store every time the Dead passed through and I believe he had recently just bought this one. Steve Parish hang time stories for me!
True. Lanois' album Flesh and Machine is in that same vein.
Brian Eno's album Apollo has some more of Lanois' ethereal pedal steel work. It actually might be my favorite album of Eno's, really subtle and sublime. For anyone who's into that, I would recommend the album Balsams by Chuck Johnson, referenced in the link above:
I have always thought the more simple and less going on with the pedal steel the better. Best at that imo was Ben Keith on many Neil Young songs. If I had to pick one song with that in mind for any pedal steel player that actually managed to crack through with a famous song on steel it would have to be B.J. Cole on Elton John's Tiny Dancer with Jerry second on Teach Your Children.
The pedal steel Jerry used at all of the 87 Dylan shows was an MCI. He also had an old Emmons that he used back in the late 60's early 70's. He also owned a Sho Bud. All bought at Scotty's. He later put the Emmons on sale used at Scotty's! Somebody scored big. It took a while to sell. That's likely about 1972.
The Pedal steel is a fairly large instrument that sits on legs. It has levers and pedals to change the tuning of various strings as the instrument is being played. The number of pedals and levers varies from instrument to instrument....anything from 3 to ...well.. lots.. You can play lap steel (formerly known as Hawaiian steel, C6 is the most common Hawaiian tuning, but there are many) seated or standing, with or without a volume pedal, though the volume pedal is more common to pedal steel. In PedalSteel guitars the most well known brands are probably Sho-Bud and Emmons. Emmons are really nice. Zane Beck Custom PedalSteyou. As far as actual tone though....they're all probably going to sound similar.
Pedal steels are by definition different. Sure, they're both played in a similar manner, but pedal steels have the various pedals and levers that change the pitch of the notes. On a lap, you've got to use the bar to do that. You can sort of fake a few things, but the more If you want to see some really smokin' pedal work, check out Robert Randolph who comes from the "Sacred Steel" black gospel pedal steel tradition but also plays some quite rockin' secular music.
I get where Turtle is coming from; I've heard Robert Randolph sound like nails on a chalkboard, but I've also heard him add subtle brilliance within a group setting, and I've heard him simply tear a room apart.
