Paris:
Paris:
The Louvre - must see, but find out what you want to see first. It's not worth bumbling around the entire thing, IMO. Mona Lisa is a let-down, but 17th and 18th century French sculptures are far more amazing than I ever imagined they would be. The room with all the Ancient Greek sculptures is unreal, too.
Notre Dame is cool, but like 5 blocks away is another church with much more amazing stained glass. Can't remember the name right now, Saint Chapel, maybe?
Montmartre - the church is beautiful (Sacre Couer), the neighborhood is way cool. Face the Eiffel Tower from up top the Sacre Couer, then turn 90º to your left and walk down the hill. If you see a bar with blacked out windows that says 'Live Music 7 Days a Week', go in. It's bad ass.
Walk around in the morning before dawn or around dawn. Get lost, deliberately. Stop and drink coffee and pain au chocolate at a local bakery. Then do it again an hour later.
Musee D'Orsay - Modern art, definitely worth stopping in. There's a Picasso museum too, I think. Didn't get a chance to go, but I'm sure it's worth a vist.
If I think of more I'll let you know...

Pretty sound advice in most cities we've been do in Europe. When we were in Amsterdam a few years ago after going to the Anne Frank House we stumbled into the Dutch Resistance Museum and the oldest Synagogue in The Netherlands, very funny thing happened in the latter, walking inside and I'm looking at a drawing of a Rabbi from 1640, my wife stops next to me and says WTF why is there a picture of Jay ? Spitting image of my friend of over 40 years and numerous Dead shows, took a picture of the drawing and texted to everyone who knows us both, not one vote of dissent. Well funny to us anyway

Are you planning on visiting other parts of Belguim or just go to Bruges? We had a great centrally located hotel in Amsterdam, I can get the name from my wife if you want, walking distance to the Central Train Station and most of the stuff you want to se. We can name a few that are must see if you like. Also we took a bus tour from Amsterdam to Bruges just for the day. If I remember correctly its about 3 hrs each way, but if you only want to see Bruges and I recommend you do, why give up a hotel and pack etc.? Elvis, sounds like a killer trip. Posting pics is fun and easy and elevates your zoning experience to the next level. I think there is a step by step tutorial on this site. I am a relative Luddite myself and was able to get it down pretty quick.
We are making like Magellan and doing the first two weeks of the trip by sea around the southern tip so we will have the glaciers covered in spades. But we have one day in Punta Arenas where my folks have booked a van and driver so we can go wherever we want (at least on gravel roads). I am curious if there are any temperate rainforests outside town or other stuff to see within an hour or two while on dry land.
Just checked out Torres del Paine and that looks bad ass, but it appears to be inland 300 km from Punta Arenas and I don't think the boat stops anywhere near there.

Hey Elvis, glad to hear you all had an amazing trip. Finally, the one day we could have possibly met up I ended up having to take some government standardized test to finish off this college degree I've been doing. Looks like you all enjoyed yourselves a lot! :)
Ken, I'm not sure but I don't think there's much of the kind of forest you're talking about in Punta Arenas or Tierra del Fuego. In general, Tierra del Fuego is pretty flat with shrub like vegetation that is constantly beaten by winds. However, if I remember correctly, you're doing the cruise around that area, which means either before or after (depending on direction) you'll stop in Puerto Chacabuco in Chile further North. From there take a local taxi or tour and ask them to take you inland. You'll see lots of beautiful mountain and forest landscape. Also, in the other direction in Ushuaia, Argentina, you can take a taxi or tourist guide (the Argentinians have that shit set up super professionally) to Tierra del Fuego National Park and those are some beautiful forestry type landscapes, but again, if I remember correctly, not the massive forests of Puerto Chacabuco. :)

I assume you are asking me? the trip was amazing and words don't describe it, but I'm a luddite and keep looking at the directions to post pics and can't. As for backpacking can't help you there as thats not in our wheelhouse at this point in life, we traveled with a tour group. Depending on which side you want to see, fly into Santiago Chile and try and see Javs Corner (ex pat see his posts above) and then fly down to Punta Arenas or into Buenos Aires and then fly to El Calafante either way once there you can probably hire someone to drive you to where you want to hike. From the 2 mayor cities its a 3 hr flight down, but see this point, if you stay in El Calafante at a hotel DO NOT BOOK XELENA which is about 3.1 kilometers from downtown and rated 5 stars on trip advisor more like a Motel 6, you have been warned :) If you need more info post here or post an email if you need private , or ask Javs Corner he knows Chile way better than I
