We are off to Patagonia on the 20th, fly home NYE, can't think of a better way to avoid the crowds of NY then being in the air :)

Just booked air for June , Spain, I've never been hoping to hit Barcelona, Madrid and Grenada

Doing anything fun for the holidays? Or long term?

Flying into Yuma Arizona tomorrow and picking up my Son with his associates degree.

Driving him home and stopping at 4 colleges along the way. Should be home by Christmas.

Love road trips

>>>>Barcelona, Madrid and Grenada

That would be Granada.  Grenada is an island in the Eastern Caribbean.

There was actually a couple who booked a flight to Grenada when they wanted to go to Granada:

Have fun in Patagonia.  My brother was down there and says the trout fishing is amazing.   Are you going to do some camping?

no camping, on a guided tour , my spelling is awful sorry, good thing i'm flying into barcelona and out of madrid, lol

I'll be working on my tan in Salvador do Bahia in Brazil. 10 days to lie on the beach, drink drinks with umbrellas in them, swim in warm waters, play with my kids and maybe go visit a turtle rehabilitation center and a couple wildlife preserves. Can't wait. January 18th, here I come.

Did you pack your speedo Javs?

How did you know about my 100 lbs. in the trunk?

Paris in April if it hasn't burned down by then! Open to any suggestions as I have never been there. Will be traveling with wife and 18 yr old daughter who speaks decent French. Want to take day/eve trip to London and also take a side trip to Normandy as my Dad made his own visit to Europe in June 1944.

You know it, Ken. Three colors.

laughlaughlaugh

The obvious stuff, Louve, Notre Dame, Versailles, We haven't been since our honeymoon in 1999 but the Normandy trip is a must when we go maybe Summer 2020 as our son is a history buff and my long deceased Dad served but not in France stil... We are hesitant about going right now with the rise of antisemitism as we ar MOT, hence the Spain trip mentioned above

Paris:

The Louvre - must see, but find out what you want to see first. It's not worth bumbling around the entire thing, IMO. Mona Lisa is a let-down, but 17th and 18th century French sculptures are far more amazing than I ever imagined they would be. The room with all the Ancient Greek sculptures is unreal, too.

Notre Dame is cool, but like 5 blocks away is another church with much more amazing stained glass. Can't remember the name right now, Saint Chapel, maybe?

Montmartre - the church is beautiful (Sacre Couer), the neighborhood is way cool. Face the Eiffel Tower from up top the Sacre Couer, then turn 90º to your left and walk down the hill. If you see a bar with blacked out windows that says 'Live Music 7 Days a Week', go in. It's bad ass.

Walk around in the morning before dawn or around dawn. Get lost, deliberately. Stop and drink coffee and pain au chocolate at a local bakery. Then do it again an hour later.

Musee D'Orsay - Modern art, definitely worth stopping in. There's a Picasso museum too, I think. Didn't get a chance to go, but I'm sure it's worth a vist.

If I think of more I'll let you know...

April VT

Burlington April 3rd for Skiing and Angelique Kidjo Remain in Light tour! Nice

Ski day, Ski day then

Start Making Sense @ Higher Ground on the 6th. Sweet!

Same as it EVER Was!

Musee D'Orsay - Modern art, definitely worth stopping in. There's a Picasso museum too, I think. Didn't get a chance to go, but I'm sure it's worth a vist.

^^ For sure worth a visit, there might also be a Dali Museum in the 11th arrondissement

SF - fly out Xmas day as a surprise for the fam - 5 nights - home on the 30th and safe at home in the woods for NYE

travel for work will get me all over the US this year plus Barcelona and Shanghai so, i'll be getting around

How did you know about my 100 lbs. in the trunk?<<<

We're going to need you to pull on up over to "secondary"

Jackmormons NYE run. Mississippi Studios, Portland. Be the light!

Hawaii for two weeks.

Big Island (Pahoa area) > Kauai (Hanalei)

I'm going to eat so much pineapple.

Hawaii for 11 days w the family.. can't wait I am completely spent

Thanks for all the Paris suggestions Zoners!

DNB NYE > Santa Cruz

That sounds really great, Turtle.

Dance big for me brother .

Hope you and yours are thriving.

Cheers.

I'm going to Home Depot.......

Really can't complain though. Seeing Hot Tuna on Friday, my kid is coming home and we're going to String Cheese for NYE.

thanks!

have fun in HI 73, which island?

Dennis, on the Paris front... another vote for the D'Orsay. Don't want to say skip the others but if you are interested in art, that's the one to hit. Second best expressionist exhibit on earth.

That and bring your walking shoes.  Like SF, just stumbling around is pretty awesome.

Mill Valley for the Jackmormons dec 21/22. Never been to Sweetwater. Looking forward to it.

We may do a quick trip during Spring Break in April, son is going to visit a friend in Southern Sweden, so we may tag along on flight and do Copenhagen, give me the must see / do thing for maybe 5 days

That and bring your walking shoes.  Like SF, just stumbling around is pretty awesome.

Pretty sound advice in most cities we've been do in Europe. When we were in Amsterdam a few years ago after going to the Anne Frank House we stumbled into the Dutch Resistance Museum and the oldest Synagogue in The Netherlands, very funny thing happened in the latter, walking inside and I'm looking at a drawing of a Rabbi from 1640, my wife stops next to me and says WTF why is there a picture of Jay ? Spitting image of my friend of over 40 years and numerous Dead shows, took a picture of the drawing and texted to everyone who knows us both, not one vote of dissent. Well funny to us anyway

We are going to a resort called Amanera in the Dominican Republic for a week of sun, beach and great food before heading up to NYC for four days of Phish at MSG.

Been in Florida since the beginning of the month.  Working on plans for July/August to Europe.   Originally, we were thinking Amsterdam, Bruges, Paris & London.  Paris doesn't seem like a great idea at the moment so I'm trying to figure out the itinerary.

4 Winds

Are you planning on visiting other parts of Belguim or just go to Bruges? We had a great centrally located hotel in Amsterdam, I can get the name from my wife if you want, walking distance to the Central Train Station and most of the stuff you want to se. We can name a few that are must see if you like. Also we took a bus tour from Amsterdam to Bruges just for the day. If I remember correctly its about 3 hrs each way, but if you only want to see Bruges and I recommend you do, why give up a hotel and pack etc.? Its a nice little town but a few hours there is enough IMO.

San Cristobal de las Casas in May.

also we always stay in a clean nice 3 star hotel in tower hill, less expensive, no real amenities but some great restaurants in walking distance and our favorite Indian place is 200 down the street. underground near by and 30-45 minute walk to lots of stuff, we like walking around. Don't miss the Churchill War Rooms if you like history but get tickets online before you depart

double post edited

>>>San Cristobal de las Casas in May.

Cool.   Those southern highlands have been on my wish list for sometime.   Didn't that town get overrun by the Zapatistas during the 1994 uprising?

San Cristobal is magical.

We plan on rock climbing at Arcotete and and soaking in some of the beauty of  the Chiapas highlands.

Hey Elvis, still ironing out the details.  Bruges is on the way and not sure I'll have the time to go to other areas in Belgium.

Cool, don't forget while in Bruges, there is a Michaelangelo Madonna, which I think is the only one outside of Italy, I may be wrong on my Art History, anyway they look for it in a movie called Monuments Men with Clooney and Damon among others, its an ok film if you see it for free. Happy travels

Definitely, already on the list.  Thanks, open to more suggestions once I figure out where exactly we're going.  I've been to London so somewhat familiar with the city.

Your trip to Patagonia is coming up and that has to be exciting!

Yeah, Patagonia on Thursday and we are booked for Spain in June. Just was told we may have to go to Copenhagen for 4-5 days in April. poor me. lol

After the Phish shows in NYC we have some more time off so we’ve decided to visit our great friends who own a lot of property in the Azores. They say it’s beautiful this time of year.

Azores are not tropical....bring a coat.

Where is Amanera in the Dominican Republic? We are going back to Casa de Campo in the DR next month for a week. Taking a private jet this time :)

Back from Patagonia, what an amazing place. We went with a tour group and they showed us everything worth seeing Punta Arenas,Torres del Paine,Laguna Amarga,Grey Glaicer, Upsala Glacier Los Glaciares National Park, even saw a gaucho demonstration and the cemetary Evita is buried in. Only wish would be more time in Santiago and Buenos Aires, but the trip is designed for the natural beauty not the urban settings, Guess we need to go back

Post pics!    We are going to be in Punta Arenas in March so let me know what the highlights and must see stuff are in and around that town.  Thanks.

Ken

Sorry no idea how to post pics, take a boat tour in Torres del Paine National Park, tjey will show you everything you need to see:) The tour stayed at the Singular Patagonia Hotel, maybe one of the best hotels I ever stayed in also be sure to see Gray Glacier, its a schleep but worth it

also if you can post an email so I can either send pics that way or thru email get a cell number I'm happy to share some pics. I'm a Luddite but can do that

image_508.jpeg

^^

did you hack my phone :)? , I have the same shot, what a great walk that was

Ken

That pic is the kind of stuff you can see, but its Pietro Moreno Glacier on the Argentine side of Patagonia, not sure if you are going there

Thanks Slack for the pictures.

Elvis, sounds like a killer trip.  Posting pics is fun and easy and elevates your zoning experience to the next level.  I think there is a step by step tutorial on this site.   I am a relative Luddite myself and was able to get it down pretty quick.

We are making like Magellan and doing the first two weeks of the trip by sea around the southern tip so we will have the glaciers covered in spades.  But we have one day in Punta Arenas where my folks have booked a van and driver so we can go wherever we want (at least on gravel roads).   I am curious if there are any temperate rainforests outside town or other stuff to see within an hour or two while on dry land.

Just checked out Torres del Paine and that looks bad ass, but it appears to be inland 300 km from Punta Arenas and I don't think the boat stops anywhere near there.

Ken

I looked at the tutorial still didn't get it. My lose. As for the rain forest I was no where near that as far as I know. But maybe ask the ex pat who lives in Santiago and posts here, I forget his name

Hey Elvis, glad to hear you all had an amazing trip. Finally, the one day we could have possibly met up I ended up having to take some government standardized test to finish off this college degree I've been doing. Looks like you all enjoyed yourselves a lot! :)

Ken, I'm not sure but I don't think there's much of the kind of forest you're talking about in Punta Arenas or Tierra del Fuego. In general, Tierra del Fuego is pretty flat with shrub like vegetation that is constantly beaten by winds. However, if I remember correctly, you're doing the cruise around that area, which means either before or after (depending on direction) you'll stop in Puerto Chacabuco in Chile further North. From there take a local taxi or tour and ask them to take you inland. You'll see lots of beautiful mountain and forest landscape. Also, in the other direction in Ushuaia, Argentina, you can take a taxi or tourist guide (the Argentinians have that shit set up super professionally) to Tierra del Fuego National Park and those are some beautiful forestry type landscapes, but again, if I remember correctly, not the massive forests of Puerto Chacabuco. :)

^^^ I didn't really forget your name,I don't like dropping real name unless told otherwise, sorry we missed you better luck down the road

just had 17 days off.

didn't do shit.

i saw nelson, surfed and got sick.

reeeeeally needed just not to be at work.

this ends today.

sniff.

...still figuring out what/where/when to do a proper 4week trip..

so many places i want to go. however the amount of savings i have is the most i have ever had in my bank account. however, not easily replaced at all....scared to dip into it...

make good money, $5 a day......................

"^^^ I didn't really forget your name,I don't like dropping real name unless told otherwise, sorry we missed you better luck down the road"

Yeah, I figured. Glad you all had a good time. If you ever get around to figuring out how to upload pics, please share some from the trip - I'm sure there's some good ones! :) I'm still trying to figure out how to resize my pictures so I can post them since all the pics I take are bigger (way bigger) than the size allowed..

Going back to Florida on Tuesday.  Didn't think I'd be back until March.

4winds, is it vacation? I hope it's just that and that everything's okay. I've never been east of the Rockies, so Florida remains a really interesting mystery to me.

Sara, if you’re in Belgium late July do not miss the GHENT FESTIVAL.  Largest fest in Europe.  It is completely wild and fun.  Ghent is also considered by UNESCO, a cultural musical city or something and has a huge jazz fest in early July, late June.  Another must see.  Ghent is my favorite in Belgium.

https://visit.gent.be/en/calendar/ghent-festivities

Not really a vacation, Judit.  My mom isn't feeling so well and asked me to come back sooner.  Hope it's just a bump in the road.

>>I've never been east of the Rockies

Wow.

Thanks, Racket.  Good to know.  Appreciate the recommendation.

I'll be thinking of you, Lila, and mere bumps in the road. ((( Good health and well-being ))) ((( Hoping hoping hoping )))

More accurately about being east of the Rockies, I've been to the Newark airport on my way to Europe, where I've been twice many years ago.

Just was told we may have to go to Copenhagen for 4-5 days in April. poor me. lol

well that changed, wife going to London for a conference while son going to Sweden (flying into Copenhagen) , I bailed on London so I might fly up to Toronto for a few days instead with my baseball travel buddy (it's like doing a dead tour only is ballparks, lol) and see a Jays game. It's 1 of 2 current ballparks we haven't been to

Charleston SC in late April - early May. Planning on taking surfing lessons, paddle boarding on the inter-coastal, seeing some historic sites and eating Low Country cooking. Turns out that WSP is headlining a festival while we’re there, but we’ll be passing on that.

We’ve got a couple long weekend trips to some different climbing gyms in Los Angeles, Sacramento, and San Diego in January and February.  The whole family is training pretty hard for some climbing in the high country after the snow melts.

Thanks, Judit.  Lila is a beautiful human and I'm not just saying that because she's my mother.

You have to come to Chicago one of these days.

Hoover, check out Squarnail and tollhouse rocks on mountain project.  Both crags can be climbed year around and are within 30 minutes of Fresno.

Say hi to Jerry the Kid for me.

>>> You have to come to Chicago one of these days. <<<

I am actually thinking of going to Chicago one of these days. I want to see the model trains at the Museum of Science and Industry, the G-scale (garden scale)train at the Chicago Botanic Garden May-Oct), possibly the Garfield-Clarendon Model Railroad Club... and art, architecture, food, music(?) and I'd like to see you and Lulu if it works out. I'm beginning to feel like traveling and I've wanted to go to Chicago for quite a while. It could happen. I'll be in touch before making real plans.

Will do Joe.  Thanks for the tips.  Love the Mtn project app.

Nice, Judit.  Looks like you have a good list started.  Are you into trains and the railroad?

judit, 4 winds and lulu sounds like fun, i'm in

>>>We are off to Patagonia

Awesome.  I'm looking into maybe doing a backpacking trip to Patagonia in 2020, specifically to the El Chalten, Fitz Roy/Cerro Torre area... supposed to be real purdy, but it looks like a veritable hell of planes, trains and automobiles to get there... let us know how your trip worked out.

Awesome-Fitz-Roy.jpg

^^^

I assume you are asking me? the trip was amazing and words don't describe it, but I'm a luddite and keep looking at the directions to post pics and can't. As for backpacking can't help you there as thats not in our wheelhouse at this point in life, we traveled with a tour group. Depending on which side you want to see, fly into Santiago Chile and try and see Javs Corner (ex pat see his posts above) and then fly down to Punta Arenas or into Buenos Aires and then fly to El Calafante either way once there you can probably hire someone to drive you to where you want to hike. From the 2 mayor cities its a 3 hr flight down, but see this point, if you stay in El Calafante at a hotel DO NOT BOOK XELENA which is about 3.1 kilometers from downtown and rated 5 stars on trip advisor more like a Motel 6, you have been warned :) If you need more info post here or post an email if you need private , or ask Javs Corner he knows Chile way better than I

Maybe Mexico ~

Cool, thanks!
