I'd rather hit the streets than live in a men's shelter in Paterson. In some respects, the shelter is probably worse than prison.

Your erstwhile buddy sounds kinda stupid. He/she could always stay at 1/2-way house and just do the Street Life as a day-job...
At least that way s/he'll have an address and place for showers, so as to acquire a job.

yea Stu. i know.
another thing i find weird is the racial intolerance after spending the last 5 years with black dudes. i would think it would be just the opposite.
last time he got out they sent him home with a bottle of 120 10 mg vicodins.
amazingly he had these folks at south woods convinced he needed medication for pain. arrived from prison fully addicted to pain killers and 120 pills. naturally couldn't find a doctor on the outside to refill the script when he ran out. lasted 2 weeks on the street. didn't stand a chance.
can you imagine that shit? guy is in jail because hes stealing to feed a addiction and prison feeds him vicodin for 2 years and cuts him loose with a "script to go".
when i heard this i nearly fell over.
this time he arrived home with a bottle of tylenol 4, also prison issued

While I realize that 1/2-way
While I realize that 1/2-way house is not all Rosy, my vision of it is bed/food/running water for low or no rent. Perhaps I'm deluded, not having been.
But I thought the idea of the halfway-house was to provide shelter and job leads, even if they are not glamour jobs. Maybe they've got some drug-counseling too?
Could just be the 'made-for-TV version' I'm believing. I've always figured that is where you go to adapt back into society after the jail time.

yesterday i saw him and he said hes willing to try the "morristown mission" in morristown. im driving him there tomorrow i hope
he thinks this is a better fit. maybe it is. less black dudes at the shelter? less drugs on the street? who the fuck knows what hes really thinking.
i know for sure its better than him running around in paterson and getting out of this area can only help.
is "other stuff" the right folder for this shit?

My impression of Morristown
My impression of Morristown is an affluent area, with limited 'inner-city" activities. There is/was a pretty tasty Sushi buffet there, "Minado". I guess I've been 3-4 times, and the selections are really quite Nice. It is not gross yuckie stuff like the typical 'China Buffet' but rather a decent place.
Here is a random citation about 1/2-way house from internet:
Anonymous
Written 10 Aug 2015
"...There are essentially two types of halfway houses. One type, which is becoming increasingly predominant, is the type associated with (and usually run by) the criminal justice system. Convicts may be required to live in a halfway house after getting out of jail or prison on parole, or in order to avoid serving jail or prison time. I have no experience with this type, so I can't speak about them.
The other type are privately run and cater to specific populations. A halfway house may be specifically for people with mental retardation, or severe mental illness, or for those struggling with substance abuse. These populations are typically not mixed.
I spent about 3 months living in a halfway house for substance abuse after leaving inpatient rehab. I will speak about my experience specifically, which may or may not generalize to other facilities.
My house had two tracks: one that was straight halfway house, and the other was for people participating in day treatment or intensive outpatient (IOP).
The halfway house track was normally a four-month program. You were expected to find a job within a few weeks. There was a vocational counselor to help you with this. There were also many therapeutic groups that you were required to or encouraged to attend, depending on what phase you were in (more about phases later).
If you were participating in day treatment or IOP (this was my track), then you were not required to work unless you wanted to, and you had fewer groups to attend because you spent much of your day in treatment. You stayed for as long as you were in treatment. Day treatment was 4 weeks, and IOP was 6 weeks. Most people go to IOP after day treatment, but people often moved into a sober house at some point, rather than staying in the halfway house the whole time. I stayed for both day treatment and IOP, plus about 2 weeks afterwards..."

So that's some of what I read
So that's some of what I read about the Half-Step, Mississippi Downtown Toodle-oo House scene.
Sounds like it is $$-free to the rehabilitating individual, with some vocational counseling and drug-counseling.
They have curfews, apparently, and if you are a minute late, pee in a jar.
Seems to be an attempt at structure after the penitentiary, with regulated freedom.

Well, if it's the St. Paul's shelter in Paterson, there are worse places to be. Used to know several of their volunteers and a member of their board.
Still, living two towns away, I know there are better places, too.
