* He grew up in a strict Baptist household and his parents wouldn't let him get a drum kit until he was in the 11th grade and only after he swore he would never play in a place that served liquor.
* After high school, he played timpani and percussion with the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra (guess they didn't serve liquor).
* He stormed out of a late era Grateful Dead show, swearing how he wanted to jump up on stage and punch Mickey in the face during Drumz. Apparently, he thought the band's playing was lazy, Mickey's shtick gimmicky, and the whole production insulting to the huge number of fans who had traveled from far away and paid good money to see them.

I've seen the Allman Brothers Band more times than any other band except the Grateful Dead. They were, as Bill Graham once introduced them at The Fillmore East, "The finest contemporary American music."
I got to see them in a High Altitude Box Canyon in Telluride, Colorado in 1991. That remains my favorite show out of dozens of Allman Brothers Band experiences. I couldn't even count the number of ABB shows and blazing drum duets & trios I've seen at The legendary Beacon Theatre in NYC. For all these experiences and accomplishments, for Butch's mastery behind the drum kit and for his diligence, as de facto band manager, keeping it all going for decades (even though you were a controversial figure) , I have to say THANK YOU, BUTCH TRUCKS , May you REST IN PEACE...
Condolences to The Trucks Family, ABB Family and fans...

From Warren Haynes:
RIP Butch Trucks: “After all the devastating losses of 2016 I can’t believe it. I’m still in shock. I am truly honored to have played music and shared life with Butch for over 25 years. He was one of a kind-as a drummer and as a human being. Butch was part of what is unfortunately now a dying breed of musicians who served with honor like soldiers. He put 110% of his self into every song he played. He was the Lou Gehrig of rock drummers. I’ve seen him play many times when he was injured or sick and most people would have bailed or phoned it in. Not Butch. He would play with the utmost intensity till he was about to fall over with no regrets. He was very proud of the fact that up until our last shows in 2014 he was the only member of the band who had never missed a show. His mission in life was to serve the music. And serve the music he did. Butch considered the Allman Brothers Band music to be reverent and each performance to be of the highest level of importance and he drove that “freight train” like no other could. We miss you Butchie.” - WH

It's bad enough, but to do it in front of your wife! I don't know about that.
Weir has been on the receiving end of being left holding the bag with suicide more than once, I think people should cut him some slack, this cuts too close to home for him in many ways. I'm not implying Trucks did this to get to Bob, it's just that he already has significant battle wounds in this arena; it doesn't take much to imagine this sort of thing brings it all up to the surface for him.
Sorry Lance, I was mostly musing on other threads I've seen bashing Weir for being a no-show at the STI show last night, but didn't feel like searching/posting on the neggy thread I saw, or bouncing it up to the top. My comment wasn't regarding anyone on the thread in particky
Cam... dude re-read my post. I was referring to Vince Welnick. and said specifically it wasn't about Trucks personally..geez. If you don't know the history, cool, but I'm not doing your homework for you there.
I don't presume to know what's on Bob's mind, but I don't think it's a stretch to speculate that the circumstances might open up old wounds for the man, and you know..maybe consider he's human, but you're the innie...
Sorry to be kinda heartless about this but shooting yourself in the head in front of your wife = total selfish fucking asshole! I think I remember reading somewhere that Butch was pretty much a asshole in everyday life but I did not know him and can not confirm. Anyway the whole dealio sucks!

We were at that 91 Telluride show as well-- a night that revitalized my interest in the Brothers, and is still deep in my memory.
We couldn't wait to get to Red Rocks (first time) the following 4th of July weekend in 1992- and were pleasantly blown away from the 5th row.
Many great memories from that band though 1996, including that great weekend at the Reno Hilton in August, when we met Gregg.
Jaimoe was on the sick list that night, so Butch & Mark handled it themselves - didn't miss a beat.
