Bakersfield is not only a foul-aired, tweaker-infested, low desert shithole that features a broad selection of characters, any one of whom would give Florida Man and his Texas counterpart a good run for their money any day of the week, it also has Kevin McCarthy for its congressperson. To borrow a fishcane post from another thread earlier today, Bakersfield is "a failure among losers."
I don't know if you've seen the story yet, Ken, but McCarthy's apartment made the news yesterday.
Kevin McCarthy says he rented a ‘room’ — in a 7,000-square-foot penthouse
Kevin McCarthy was criticized the other night by Tucker Carlson of Fox News Channel for renting an apartment in the District from pollster Frank Luntz, a longtime Republican pollster who also does a lot of corporate work (and has been critical of former president Donald Trump).
“Kevin McCarthy promises Republicans he shares their values,” Carlson said. “He tells them he’s on their side. He says he will fight for them against permanent Washington, the forces that would like to destroy their lives … and at the end of the day, Kevin McCarthy goes home to Frank Luntz’s apartment in Penn Quarter and laughs about it.”
I really dont like Texas at all and have spent a lot of good times in FL over the years so FL basically is much "better" in my view. Lately, however, in the Desantis/tRump era and with the many more people flocking to live there (it was already crowded) it seems that 'the FL experience' has degraded overall and it's political environment even more so. I admit that I have not been there since 2015 but also have no desire to go back soon either.

. The Republican Party’s efforts to limit voting rights are making inroads.
Florida and Texas became the latest states to move toward limiting voter access after November’s elections, joining Republican-backed measures in Georgia, Montana and Iowa. Other states including Arizona, Michigan and Ohio are considering their own bills.
On Thursday, Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida signed a law that restricts absentee ballots, a popular method of voting in that state, and expands a current rule that prohibits outside groups from canvassing close to polling places. Critics say the new law will disproportionately hurt people of color.
The Texas House of Representatives passed a similar measure last week that would also greatly empower partisan poll watchers. If Gov. Greg Abbott signs the bill, which he supports, Texas will become one of the most difficult states in the nation in which to cast a ballot.
Without an effective legislative or legal strategy, Democrats are applying pressure on their allies in Washington and trying to energize supporters ahead of the 2022 midterm elections.
The sweeping new measures echo the fictional narrative from Donald Trump and his allies that the electoral system is rigged against him. Between the new laws, the vilification of Representative Liz Cheneyand a bizarre recount in Arizona, it has become clear just how absolute Trump’s grip on Republicans remains, our political correspondent writes.
