and Kevin is selling his soul at bargain prices to each of the far right extremists in Congress, and they're not buying. He's not Nazi enough to get their votes, even after they own him.
Ideology plus extremism. The 20 hold outs all got their seats in gerrymandered districts by being the most extreme candidate. Lesson learned. They aren't going to take the chance of losing to an even more extreme candidate in two years particularly with something like this that has zero impact at home.
This is why 17 Republican Senators voted to pass the spending bill a few weeks ago before this clown show took over. All they had to do was take one look at what was coming and come to the decision that they can't be trusted to make decisions that involve money.
And this is the easy no consequence vote. Buckle up for two years of bomb throwing, their first order of business was to remove the metal detectors from the chamber. I mean at this point would anyone be surprised at a mass shooting in the House.
Interesting quandary. McCarthy is a spineless turd and terrible option for Speaker. Who else could muster 218 votes or very close to it? Are there any adults in the room/chamber?
I'm sure this on-going shit show will help the GOP attract those ever-deceasing Independent/Swing voters that they desperately need. Owning the libs! LOL.

While I view this as a "GOP issue" at the moment, the shelf life of compartmentalizing said culpability exclusively to the GOP is limited.
How is the onus ultimately non all members-elect to solve the problem?
What if this drags out for weeks, months, or even a year; at what point do Dems have a duty to play a larger role?
As an independent, I believe it's important to point out that the Constitution was written before parties.
I think said onus is or will eventually be on all members-elect to get through and out of this mess. Given that GOP now has the majority, the current onus is on it/them to elect a Speaker. Given the serious state of partisanship, DEMs are staying in their lane with no lifeline or bailout for the majority (which is clearly very fractured) but may have to get more creative as well.
I did previously state, "Who else could muster 218 votes or very close to it? Are there any adults in the room/chamber?"
Maybe if a large bloc of moderate R's put forward a candidate they could get enough D's to vote for that person. However, this isn't the fault of D's, nor is it theirs to fix. This hasn't happened in 150 years, and it's because the R's are a fucking mess. I'm sure they'll have it sorted out by next week, and then we can move forward with some amazing non-governance for the next 2 years because of all the deals McCarthy had to make.
I think we might all be better off is this congress spends the next two years just voting on the Speaker. No the Dems have zero obligation to save the Republicans from the shit show of their own making. The Republicans in the Senate saw this train wreck coming and funded the government for a year so there is nothing of substance for the house to do for the next year, and we all know how they will fill that time. With endless hearings on Fauci, Hunter Bidens dick, and probably impeaching Biden.
...plus I just read that "payroll cannot be processed on Jan 13th" unless this is resolved so that'll get their attention if nothing else motivates these assholes to do their jobs. I wouldn't be surprised to see them soon pushing a Congressional pay raise too.

You're not wrong about the "political construct" being of their own making (GOP), but will an extended non-existence of a SOTH and House as a body not be the nation's problem if the economy completely tanks as a result of a default on our nation's debt if this somehow gets dragged out for two years?
I believe they've created a rule that the Speaker must receive at least 218 votes. It's not in the Constitution, but it's a rule. Otherwise, Jeffries would already be Speaker because he has a majority of votes.
Personally, I like Kaisich's idea of moderates forming a coalition government, electing a normal Speaker, and freezing out the crazies.
I see what you're saying. Yeah, there are a lot of procedural rules that need to be revamped.
I also like the idea of a coalition government to freeze out the crazies; there'd be an enormous "opportunity cost" swing in the positive direction in so far as providing a potential off-ramp from MAGA for so-called "moderates"; while at the same time helping to mitigate the crazies from dragging the party as a whole further into the abyss. While I don't believe the Dems have an obligation to go down this road, I do think it'd be good for the nation in the end if some semblance of a genuine agreement can be reached.
A moderate coalition would ensure things like Hunter Biden's foreskin won't be investigated, and Biden won't be impeached because of Hunter's foreskin.
> I believe they've created a rule that the Speaker must receive at least 218 votes<
A member must receive a majority of total votes cast to become speaker.
Absent members, and members voting present are not counted as votes. If McCarthy can get to 213 for, and 9 to vote present, he's gets it.
I believe that there are 5 who have said that they will never vote for McCarthy. Barring a change in their stance, or democratic support, McCarthy is done.
I don't see how those deals will matter. McCarthy is a MAGA bitch, so the differences aren't over policy. They just hate him as a person, and there's no reconciling that. I know that one proposal McCarthy was making was for it to be easier to remove him as Speaker. It's amazing that he's pandering to Boebert and Goetz, a child diddler and the wife of a child diddler.
I hope McCarthy is done, at least as potential Speaker for now anyway. I seem to recall reading that at one point in the past a Speaker was voted in by a plurality due to multiple candidates getting similar numbers of votes over many sessions but that must have required a temp (?) rule change. I agree that the country would definitely be much better off if this could get resolved sooner than later. Think about trying to mitigate another terrorist attack or natural disasters that cannot be addressed, etc.
How does Kaisich's 'coalition govt' even begin or at what point does it form and take hold? Without major changes, we have historically had and are still in a 2-party system that would be putting forth and electing moderate candidates if that was what the majority of voters actually wanted, right? Kaisich tried staying in the game as a moderate but hhad limited appeal, eventually lost out, and may be disgruntled. I am not picking sides but the reality is that many districts are overly partisan and send people to Congress (House in particular) to merely jam the other side and dig in to do nothing while maybe talking a good game to work across the aisle to get things done blah blah blah.
Indeed - McCarthy's death grip on the notion of becoming Speaker is very dangerous and he would likely cut any deal with anyone to get there, leading to even more shit show chaos.
Looks like McCarthy is getting closer to getting the job. If he has any sense, his first order of business will be to censure the Freedom caucus and Jan 6th conspirators
^I am not necessarily buying it either but it's not an impossibility at the same time. McCarthy team preparing to win speakership tonight and taking steps to organize House
From CNN's Manu Raju, Melanie Zanona and Annie Grayer
Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s team believes they have the votes to win the speakership tonight and are already taking steps to organize the House soon after his expected victory, according to multiple GOP sources.
It’s still unclear which members will flip their votes to “present” or in favor of McCarthy.
McCarthy allies have told members to prepare for a very late night to approve a rules package after they are sworn into office, the sources say.
I enjoy process so I'm watching the vote and ensuing activity, without any analysis. So many power playing smug bastards. Gaetz, who yesterday nominated the previous president for Speaker, sits there. I'm surprised the clerk who calls the roll has any voice left at this point.

I sat there and watched the entire 14th round. What's going on isn't democracy, it's political grandstanding by a bunch of attention whores.
Sitting next to each other were Boebert and Goetz. He diddles minors, as does her husband. What a mess.

Yes, at the very least ... although still wonder if they're being extorted by even more insidious powers?
Boebert looked like she had seen a ghost (all through the applause) on her first "Present" vote on the second to last round.
