What if this drags out for weeks, months, or even a year; at what point do Dems have a duty to play a larger role?

I believe they've created a rule that the Speaker must receive at least 218 votes. It's not in the Constitution, but it's a rule. Otherwise, Jeffries would already be Speaker because he has a majority of votes.
Personally, I like Kaisich's idea of moderates forming a coalition government, electing a normal Speaker, and freezing out the crazies.

While I don't believe the Dems have an obligation to go down this road, I do think it'd be good for the nation in the end if some semblance of a genuine agreement can be reached.
