Not that I wouldn't want to attend a D&C show on campus at Cornell University, but there is no way I'm going to make it to Ithaca in May 2023. I saw a couple of good ones there. ^^Dont blame Phil...Mayer was fill-in Tonight Show host on Feb 4, 2015 when Weir was musical guest and they played Truckin' together for the first time live.
"Flashback: John Mayer Plays With Bob Weir for First Time, Giving Rise to Dead & Co."
The opening notes were one of the biggest stunners I heard from the Dead. Both sets were so on the $$, I figured the band was cooked & one more quick tune & off to Syracuse.
Also caught 1980, both 2nd sets kicked off w/Shakedown>Bertha. Played a couple other times in the early 80's, then dropped
I can't remember exactly what I paid for "Circle of Gold" tickets for the Rainforest Benefit at MSG, but it was around $200 for seats in the first 10 rows, a poster, and after party with the band.
Anyone have any idea what the regular non-Patron price will be? One of my brothers has a friend with a kid at Cornell who he is reaching out to for help in trying to procure some tickets. He was a little dismayed by the $5000 price. No Information on the D&C website about on sale date or ticket options. I told him I'd make the trip if the ticket was reasonably priced.
Did notice that while most of their tour is sold out, there are still tickets available for Arizona, Star Lake, Fenway Night 1, Philly, Citi Field both nights, Wrigley Night 1, and 2 of the Colorado shows. I suspect I will most likely catch The Gorge shows. While listed as sold out, I don't expect those tickets to be that hard to find.
Congress should find it "odd" that all of the "sold out" shows still have original channel (Ticketmaster/Live Nation) tix available, with most still priced around the same level as they have always been for this DeadCo tour too.
I went to the show in '99. Dylan and Phil with Jorma. It snowed.
Weather for 5/8/77 from a couple attendees....I remember the weather, beautiful Mother’s Day in the morning, deteriorating into cold rain and then heavy snow.
Most memorable was the weather; when we got to Cornell in the morning, it was warm and sunny, playing with the frisbee on the lawn, waiting for the liquor stores to open at noon. Clouded over and started to drizzle, so they opened the doors a little early to let the crowd in out of the rain. Went out the doors after the show to find 6-10 inches of snow and still coming down hard
"Not only was it not the best show ever, it wasn't even the best show that week!">>>The Aud in Buffalo the next night is a contender along with Boston Garden on the 7th.
Oh sure, Turtle it's pricey, but it's a benefit for a couple of good causes, it's at a small venue that hosted a legendary show, and you'd expect this band will rise to the occasion and deliver a strong performance. Either way, I've never been to Ithaca and seen Cornell University's grounds, and it sounds like a fun trip. After all, we've got to live a little while were still alive. I'd imagine the odds are stacked against me actually getting tickets, but I still believe in miracles. YMMV and that's okay.
It's cool that they have already said they will be streaming the audio for free for all who can't be there.
^^^^ Is that directed at me or to Deadheads holding Cornell tickets?
I already maintain a colorful and over-booked professional and personal life, thank you very much!
I admire the Mini Wall of Sound creator.. met him at CAP... in true Deadhead style, he is an entrepreneur: he now designs/sells MWOS for home audio fans with deep pockets.
I also think this whole thing is lame as fuck, and that one would have to be dumb as fuck / completely blindfolded to not understand how completely appropriated this whole shebang is.
I just saw a video clip of DeadCo the other day in NOLA playing Uncle John’s Band.
The tempo is SO. FUCKING. SLOW that it is astounding. John Mayer and Jay Lane both look like they are in physical pain, trying to continue playing at such a slow fucking tempo for that song.
It really is unbelievable. How did Weir get so over-the-top fucked up with this slow tempo obsession?
I feel better than ever that I’m not spending the money. But that’s me. For those who are going, by all means enjoy the party.
This seems like marketing hype for me--let's see, only original band members left. Now, Cornell was always a solid show, but had heard mentality srrounding it--greatest show--well that is always subjective, but never for me. Second set is indeed stellar, but gosh, I always thought the next night in Buffalo is a better show, so was Englistown and SMU tha year. I got into tape trading heavy in 77 and remember getting a Betty Board of Cornel 3 or 3 months after the show (on my Maxcell XLS-90) and thinking good gig--but it took on a legend well beyond what it was--IMHO.
That video of UJB from NOLA looks even more painful for John to sing the words THAT FUCKING SLOW than it is to play it that fucking slow on the guitar.
It really is ridiculous. It’s past the point of being a bad joke. It has become almost like a deliberate affront. Just how, exactly, is it that Bob Weir really thinks that the song should be that fucking slow? And just how, exactly, is it that Weir feels that his sole individual opinion on that fucking slow tempo should be the mandatory rule that everyone in the band and in the audience must accept and obey?
IMO cornell is often considered the best because the high points of that show translate very very well to tapes, and its easier to hear those high points as a non-deadhead, casual fan or if youre not really paying attention.
properly digesting a 74 show requires an experienced GD listener who is paying attention to the music. its easy to miss alot of those high points if you are not paying attention or dont know what to listen for - but with cornell, and 77 in general, those high points are very obvious and very digestible.
Agree with Dr. Benway that it was a widely circulated tape, easy to digest, in upstate NY, long a dead stronghold, probably got great press. It is a solid show any overtime, people would so oh this was the best or this version of this song was the best and people tend to jump on those bandwagons Also, back in the day Relix Magazine probably talked it up
> And just how, exactly, is it that Weir feels that his sole individual opinion on that fucking slow tempo should be the mandatory rule that everyone in the band and in the audience must accept and obey?
Of the remaining GD members, Weir is as close to being a marquee name as D&C gets, so he gets to call the shots. As for the audience accepting Weir's tempos, we vote with our wallets, and D&C hasn't seen a dime from me.
There's no reason to think that Billy would show just because it's Cornell... especially when he was so happy playing with others in NOLA this weekend...
^^^
I don't know what the current or any beef was/is, however I was listening to Sirius Gans/Lambert show on Sunday and Pete Lavezzoli the current drummer for Jazz is Dead was on and spoke of a recent conversation he had with Phil Lesh about the drums and the Grateful Dead, and Phil said to him that he believed that if it was any other drummer, The Grateful Dead would never have been what they became. That's some pretty high praise in my opinion.
Don't know if there is a free stream tonight (possibly an audio stream), but here is the link for the nugs.net stream, which is $30 or $15 with a subscription:
There’s been a lot of talk lately about the legendary fake show on 5/8/77. I’ve kept my silence on the subject for 42 years... now it’s finally time to come clean on the whole subject.
The whole idea began back in late 1969/early 1970. The Department of Defense and the CIA were very disappointed by the way the Vietnam War was progressing. Not only were we losing but, more importantly, the US public did not approve of the war and, worse yet, weren’t believing everything the military said about what was happening. This was an unprecedented event. Every other recent war was viewed positively by the public... or at least with apathy in the case of Korea. Something had to be done. They decided to take a page from the Soviets and experiment with mind control. Together with Disney and a fledgling computer company called Microsoft, they set out to prove that brainwashing could really work on the very people who opposed them: the hippies.
It isn’t widely known but Cornell was actually the second test of these mind control procedures. The first occurred in mid-1975 and was a dismal failure. 2 major mistakes were made. First, they picked the one time that the Dead were not touring. This created all sorts of problems with the subject audience. The more serious mistake was in not updating the criteria of the experiment. Due to typical government inefficiency, they used the 1969 version of the Dead that was playing when the program was conceived. The sudden appearance of Pigpen, who had died 2 years earlier, literally blew the minds of those in attendance. 6 months were spent erasing all traces of the "show" and carefully rebuilding as much of their minds as possible. The subjects were eventually released and most of them became evangelists, their only lingering memory of the whole experiment being an unshakeable belief that they’d witnessed a true miracle.
Unfortunately, no tapes have been found from this first experiment. That’s a real shame because the version of Dark Star->St Stephen->Eleven->Lovelight used was supposedly the best ever. After a few drinks, the original scientists still speak in awe about the music heard that day.
By Nov 1977, everyone was ready for the second test. This time, they learned from their mistakes. A small group of college students were hired to attend shows from 1976 through 1977. Our job was to collect tapes of the Dead’s performances, select which tunes to use, and to help identify subjects for the upcoming experiment. The location and date were chosen with equal care. It was a off-day during the tour and the location close enough to the real concerts to be believed. Of more importance was the late snowfall that day. That unusual and easily confirmed event provided the glue that would hold the implanted memories together. Even now 22 years later, people "remembering" that concert use almost identical words to describe leaving the show.
Overall, the experiment was a great success. Of course, some people were given slightly different memories. Some, like Teddy Goodbear, "remember" taping the show and were even provided "Audience" tapes to further cement the hoax. Still others remember getting "horribly smashed" up front. None of this actually occurred.
A week after the "concert" experiment, a 2nd test was done on the town of Cornell itself. In order to perfect this hoax, the town itself must also be convinced that the concert took place. Disney had acquired owner- ship of all the local TV and radio stations through dummy corporations. Using special chips developed by Microsoft, they played sublimbminal messages to every man, woman and child in a 100 mile radius of Barton Hall. For the most part, this programming still holds today although some people did prove resistant to the message.
As far as the source of the music, for the most part the list posted by "brew ziggins" is correct. The only mystery remaining is the Scarlet-> Fire. That was actually performed by the Dead specifically for this experiment. Since Jerry worked for the CIA, it was easy to convince him and the rest of the band to go along. Plus he liked the idea of "pranking" a large group of people like this. The fabled 2/6/77 "take a step back" rehearsal tape is also from material taped for these experiments.
The soundboard tapes in circulation were leaked by Betty O’Connell who edited the original tapes. I don’t know if it was just a coincidence or not, but they were leaked at about the same time as the tapes recorded by Betty Cantor were found. In any event, they became part of the so-called "Betty Boards". Leaking these tapes also provided the first cracks in the hoax to appear since the tapes were distributed to people who were not in the experiment and who knew that no show was performed that day. It was necessary to obtain their silence through blackmail, bribery and in extreme cases, mind control itself. That’s also how this "show" came to be listed in all the popular Dead show guides like DeadBase.
So what’s happened to these mind control techniques used in this experiment? Microsoft has used this power to become one of the biggest, most influential companies in history. They sure didn’t become that big by providing quality products. It was used to shape public reaction to the Gulf War. It’s also clear that George Bush never understood the full power of these methods. There are also indications that this technology might explain the otherwise unbelievable popularity of rap music.
I heard Pete on Tales yesterday also, and he was referring to when he and Phil and Mayer and gang did a recreation of the 77 Barton Hall show at TXR in 2015. That was apparently when Phil and Pete were talking about music and how the Dead played back in the day, and Phil said that the Dead would never have worked musically with any other drummer besides Billy. Considering how Phil and Bill hadn’t been on friendly terms by then for quite some time, it seemed like a very honest and sincere thing for Phil to say. Music is music, and he gave Bill serious props.
It really is too bad that Billy is out for this last go round. Jay is rock solid, but it’s not the same thing. Oh well.
I’m listening to tonight’s show on XM, and it actually sounds pretty good. Maybe they do read this board and saw my rant about tempos, but I very very much doubt that! I’m glad they’re mixing up the setlist tonight instead of just doing the original show. The Minglewood opener was a good fake-out, though.
Very happy they are restreaming the whole show. Quality of stream and light show are all top shelf stuff. I missed most of it the first time through, so i'm very happy to get to see the whole thing on the rerun. Eyes>Estimated first set was great. Whole second set just stellar IMHO. I'm into the drums now. Boy could they have ripped up a Dark Star> St. Stephen>Eleven on this night. They are all very tight and the Help>Slip>Frank was cooking. Not sure how Bob got his singing voice back to this level, but he is singing so much better than he was a decade ago.
I’m guessing he doesn’t smoke anymore which will definitely help his voice. Maybe he likes edibles, but not smoking will make a big difference, along with basic healthy living like laying off the booze, drinking plenty of water, eating well, exercise, sleep, etc. It’s not rocket science, if you have the will to pull it off.
High expectations for summer tour!!!! By far the best DeadCo I've heard!
Basically, everything from Estimated through Terrapin was performed with the utmost of care and love! These guys put their hearts into this one! As much as everyone loves to hate on Mayer; The man brought it; As well as the rest of the band. Props to Jay Lane; The drums section was quite fine! I'll see how the summer tour starts out; But will probably custie up for one of the nights at Citi Field.
I only heard a little snippet and it sounded very good....yet very much not my cup of tea. It feels too pop-y for my liking, like genericized dead. Nothing wrong with it. Just not for my ears.
what were the marvelous surprises that we couldn't imagine?
Watched the entire stream last night on Nugs and came away very impressed.
The "All New Rhythm Devils" section with Jay and Mickey was more than just fine, seemed like a absolute improvement to me.
Jay takes cues from John and Bobby and is able to shift gears on the fly and nearly lay out entirely for a few moments or somewhat stifle the drumming attack so that softer moments in the jams can occur organically. This led to many more moments of varied dynamics in one show than I can recall ever occurring with this band previously.
And he keeps steady, ready time on a mostly consistent basis.
Not a lot of tennis shoes in the dryer moments last night - I'd say that bodes very well for the summer tour.
Kudos to them for a powerhouse show and here's hoping they keep it up and go out with a nice bang this summer. My oh my.
Not my cup of shroom tea, but I'm glad folks had fun.
Really, now it's just the latest incarnation of Ratdog - Weir, Chimenti, and Lane, with Oteil replacing Wasserman, and Mayer instead of Karan or Kimmock.
Yeah, so it's glorified Ratdog, but top-shelf Ratdog, which, on a special night, could be pretty damn sick...
I have seen this band some years, and stayed away on purpose other years... but on a good night they can give the stadium a good time. It's 2023, hard to argue with that...
They are like 93+ Dead. They will have amazing moments but at several times during the show they will have you questioning your life choices and why you decided to go to the show, but with way better set lists.
All I feel like saying is that I am glad I went. As far as Dead Co goes, it was top shelf.
For me, I had a killer weekend. Four nights in Ithaca. Grateful Dead cover bands every night. Chicken wings four days. Lots of beer. And I met up with a college friend for the weekend that I hadn't seen since Fare The Well eight years ago in Chicago. Absolute magic for me. Awesome weekend. Great show.
>>>They are like 93+ Dead. They will have amazing moments but at several times during the show they will have you questioning your life choices and why you decided to go to the show, but with way better set lists.
I think your first part is right on the money regarding hot and cold spots, but I still would rather go to 93 dead than D+C any day. I thought the above Cornell setlist lacked creativity which seems on par with the band. Was it solid song selection? Sure. Was it fun if you were there? Likely/ But I would never go to a D+C show and think something special might happen. Even in later era dead, you still got a rare moment of something unique.
This is a pretty damn long thread for a band that nobody on this board likes.
I'm enjoying all the qualifications in the positive comments.
My comment is that after 28 years of the main band being gone, not much of anything related to the Grateful Dead that lots of people are enjoying should be too strongly criticized.
Because really, in the end what else was it really all about?
This was a fun venue to see a show, (2) back in the day. Those illuminated windows bring back some nice memories. It's nice seeing photos of fans having a good time in a great space.
My niece was crushed that my sister wouldn't shell out $1000 for a ticket. Instead, they did couch tour with people streaming the shows from their phones. I heard it was wack a mole, with Swift's organization shutting down each stream before another would pop up.
Dead & Co. offered a free stream, did they not? I just clicked on a link posted here and watched the whole thing. Incredible pro-shoot quality for both audio and video. Best live stream I've watched in a long time. Those who complain about tempo wouldn't have had an argument on this night. I have not checked youtube to see if any of that pro-shoot stream is posted. I did see an audience post of the Help>Slip>Frank, but the quality really wasn't there.

This seems like marketing

It’s ridiculous and it’s bullshit.

Of the remaining GD members, Weir is as close to being a marquee name as D&C gets, so he gets to call the shots. As for the audience accepting Weir's tempos, we vote with our wallets, and D&C hasn't seen a dime from me.

I heard Pete on Tales

High expectations for summer
High expectations for summer tour!!!! By far the best DeadCo I've heard!
Basically, everything from Estimated through Terrapin was performed with the utmost of care and love! These guys put their hearts into this one! As much as everyone loves to hate on Mayer; The man brought it; As well as the rest of the band. Props to Jay Lane; The drums section was quite fine! I'll see how the summer tour starts out; But will probably custie up for one of the nights at Citi Field.

Watched the entire stream
My oh my.

Great show.

Long live the Grateful Dead.

Dead & Co. offered a free stream, did they not? I just clicked on a link posted here and watched the whole thing. Incredible pro-shoot quality for both audio and video. Best live stream I've watched in a long time. Those who complain about tempo wouldn't have had an argument on this night. I have not checked youtube to see if any of that pro-shoot stream is posted. I did see an audience post of the Help>Slip>Frank, but the quality really wasn't there.
