Personally, I'm sad because I have never been to Maui, and will never get to experience this old town. Of course I realize this is a selfish and petty concern, as many of those residents have lost their lives, their relatives, their friends, their homes, their businesses, and their treasured 300+ year old community. May healing hands find them all.
I've never been to the islands either. i always thought they were humid, lush and tropical, and that lava was the main threat . I never thought conditions could ever be dry enough to burn like this or ever overrun people. :(
Devastating doesn't even begin to describe it. The effects of this are so deep. Where to start? Getting relief equipment over there will be a challenge. And yeah, homelessness. Alot there already.

I saw that banyan tree when we went over. Stayed in a cabin at Waianapnapa State Park. Drove the road to Hana and met a guy named Cal who worked on a ranch in Hana. Part of his job was riding the perimeter and fixing fence. After I swam in a cave with he and his nephew, he realized I wasn't a typical tourist. With me being from Utah, we talked about the negative effects of tourism, and he invited us to be his guests at a "real" luau a few days later but we were leaving and couldn't go.

Going to shows, or burningman, or flying even on private, or coffee pods, or cow farts, or whether you can recycle this or that, or how often you water your lawn, or whether you eat meat, or whatever thing people want to hitch to climate change doesn't matter one little bit and have made the problem seem insurmountable. When a problem is insurmountable people shut down.
Fixing the problem is no where close to easy but it is also blindingly simple. Run buildings and ground transportation on renewable energy. That's it. That is all that needs to be done. The rest is just noise.
