the place is pretty dry....hurricane winds added to local strong trades..i have a friend by haiku, believe they are all ok.

i'm so sad about this... devastating for the island.

a few of the DNB locations I camped at in 2020 are affected, I'm sure.... even Kula in the upcountry

mauinow.com has good coverage... lots of videos on their Insta account.

OGG airport is sheltering around 2000 people as of this morn!

all schools were closed except out on Hana side.

Trouble in paradise.

Bet Smoke On The Water is getting heavy rotation on all those island classic rock stations today.

Weird weather the cause of a lot of this, like the easterly winds destroying Cali and Oregon recently...   now Hawaii is getting an unusual wind blast.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Dora, which started near Mexico, totally missed the Islands to the south, as it continues it's thousands of mile trek to become a typhoon.  How often does that happen, never seen data on that subject...

Six dead already and FL just approved climate curriculum for the schools that says wind and solar pollute the earth and make life miserable

Except for St Augustine and Pine Island, fuck Florida!

Ways to help relief work on Maui are listed in this story:

36 dead

The flyover video of the devastation in Lahaina is horrific.

Personally, I'm sad because I have never been to Maui, and will never get to experience this old town.  Of course I realize this is a selfish and petty concern, as many of those residents have lost their lives, their relatives, their friends, their homes, their businesses, and their treasured 300+ year old community.  May healing hands find them all.

Feel soooooooo bad for locals.  May you recover quickly.

Instant homeless crisis

And you thought housing on Maui was expensive last week?

KILL FLORIDA, AND pUTIN   AND ALL MOB BOSSES  magaidioy trump first>>>illegal post , but it is how i feel

The death toll is up to 53, and they're saying it could go higher. So many scenes of unimaginable devastation.

Too awful to want to see pics, vids, etc....     so saddening!

LIVE HUMBLY AND PROSPER

I've never been to the islands either. i always thought they were humid,  lush and tropical, and that lava was the main threat . I never thought conditions could ever be dry enough to burn like this or ever overrun people. :(

((((((((((((( Mauii residents )))))))))))))))))

Devastating doesn't even begin to describe it. The effects of this are so deep. Where to start? Getting relief equipment over there will be a challenge. And yeah, homelessness. Alot there already.

Mick Fleetwood lost his restaurant. https://www.huffpost.com/entry/mick-fleetwood-hawaii-restaurant-maui-fir...

“Fleetwoods on front Street has been lost and while we are heartbroken our main priority is the safety of our dear staff and team members,” Fleetwood wrote on Instagram.

“On behalf of myself and my family I share my heartfelt thoughts and prayers for the people of MAUI. We are committed to supporting the community and those affected by this disaster in the days month and years to come.”

I saw that banyan tree when we went over. Stayed in a cabin at Waianapnapa State Park. Drove the road to Hana and met a guy named Cal who worked on a ranch in Hana. Part of his job was riding the perimeter and fixing fence. After I swam in a cave with he and his nephew, he realized I wasn't a typical tourist. With me being from Utah, we talked about the negative effects of tourism, and he invited us to be his guests at a "real" luau a few days later but we were leaving and couldn't go.

>>>And when people stop going to Jam Band shows and use up all our natural resources for a REAL GOOD TIME!

Going to shows, or burningman, or flying even on private, or coffee pods, or cow farts, or whether you can recycle this or that, or how often you water your lawn, or whether you eat meat, or whatever thing people want to hitch to climate change doesn't matter one little bit and have made the problem seem insurmountable. When a problem is insurmountable people shut down.

Fixing the problem is no where close to easy but it is also blindingly simple. Run buildings and ground transportation on renewable energy. That's it. That is all that needs to be done. The rest is just noise.

Lahaina always seemed to me to be where the uber rich went to party. There were some great restaurants there.  But what might be the greatest loss, other than those that were killed of course, might be that huge banyan tree. I will look for pics.

From News: Looks like Banyan Tree survived so far.  Prayers out  to all locals,

I thought I read in one article that it was a burning stump.

Scorched by Maui wildfire, historic Lahaina banyan tree appears still standing

August 11, 20235:00 AM ET - NPR

For 150 years, an enormous banyan tree has stood at the center of the Maui town of Lahaina. Now, that tree appears to be badly charred by wildfire that has killed at least 36 people. But it's still standing.

Hope this link can work for ya. It has a 16 second video, and a pic of how it looked before.  https://www.nytimes.com/2023/08/10/us/lahaina-banyan-tree.html

That Banyan tree is an absolute wonder, manifesting ancient energy.

From all accords the base and roots appear to be in decent shape and I'd imagine it will bounce back relatively quickly.

Thanks Andy and Slick. Hope it recovers.

Leaving aside the (probably) hundreds of lost lives, the area will likely take 5 years and 5B dollars to "recover".

I was talking about the tree.

I know - just saying. The tree may recover soon. The rest, not so much.

My heart goes out to all affected  - animal or vegetable.

Mick Fleetwood lives there. His interview on TV

"You get a new house, you get a new house. Everybody gets a new house!"

HA HA HA HA!!!

I get it and funny shit!

Maui is a wetland by nature.

plantation and colonizers diverted the natural resources to themselves

and now it is gone

pretty terrible thread title, as well

and, dave's take:

now i can't go be a tourist there. POOR ME !

area will likely take 5 years and 5B dollars to "recover".

^^^^^^

the recovery will be to finish destroying any culture there and turning it into orlando
