It’s our honor to invite you to UNBROKEN CHAIN: A Celebration of the Life and Music of Phil Lesh, Hosted by Grahame Lesh & Friends.
In celebration of what would have been Phil Lesh’s 85th birthday, Grahame Lesh & Friends are gathering many of Phil’s Friends and closest collaborators for a one-weekend-only celebration of Phil’s life, music, and enduring legacy at The Capitol Theatre on March 14 and 15. Phil’s heartfelt wish was for his music to live on through his family, friends, fellow musicians, and fans. We look forward to gathering with you all to connect and celebrate in Phil’s honor.
The lineup features Rick Mitarotonda, Eric Krasno, Oteil Burbridge, Jason Crosby, John Molo, Jennifer Hartswick, plus many more very special guests to be announced.
Proceeds will benefit MusiCares and Undue Medical Debt.
Presale: Thursday 1/23 10 AM ET – 10 PM ET
On-sale: Friday 1/24 @ 10 AM ET
Gosh this just makes me so sad again. I know we have expected this and Dad set up Grahame well to carry his torch, just seeing those name up there and the stars... I just don't know if I'm ready
March is not a good month for driving east. Guess we will be hoping for a stream. Huge thanks to Grahame and all those putting this on. I'm sure the party will be as large as Phil's legacy, which is immense...
While we are airing our grievances, I'll point out the logo "Unbroken Chain " looks broken. The U and The C look severed. The A and the O would have been a natural choice.
I'll still try to go to the show...
Even in memoriam we are still subjected to screechy Grahame Lesh. Hard pass.
Perhaps a real show in the Bay will be announced but I'd imagine Grahame will insert himself into that as well.
i think it might be time for a bit of a reality check here - GL isn't "inserting" himself into anything - whatever is left of the infrastructure of PLF is mostly in his hands now. im guessing that in the coming months and years, we will see an attempt at fully transitioning PLF into GLF. i will not be on the bus for that portion of the journey, but wish happy travels to those who are.
Shows require someone to create them, and for a show like you're all talking about that means a professional promoter. Grahame or his family didn't put these Capitol shows together, Shapiro did, which doesn't surprise me at all since he is the only major league promoter who creates events.
I was half-expecting that here in the BA Another Planet might put something similar on at the Fox Oakland or the BG Civic. They're the remnants of Bill Graham Presents and BGP was the master of creating special one-off events, something that APE occasionally still does. I also thought there was a slight possibility that Goldenvoice might do something at the Warfield, but any type of show like these requires a professional operation to put them on and leaders to have the idea and push it through, and especially these days promoters just don't do that type of thing.
Except for one, the guy everyone loves to throw sand at.
Personally I have very little interest in any P&F type show, since at least for me what made the Phil & Friends concept work was Phil, and unfortunately he won't be at any memorial shows. No matter who plays, without Phil it's just a bunch of musicians who don't usually play together, won't have rehearsed very much, hammering out songs and looking at each other, wondering who takes the first solo and when to stop.
It's still very cool that Shappy is doing this and I'm sure that the shows will be emotional, they're benefiting a very good cause and they'll be a good time, but ultimately Elvis has left the building.
>>> No matter who plays, without Phil it's just a bunch of musicians who don't usually play together, won't have rehearsed very much, hammering out songs and looking at each other, wondering who takes the first solo and when to stop.

While I certainly hope the shows are strong, emotional and memorable, I think what Lance has stated above has a good chance of turning out to be accurate.
I'm sure the shows will be epic. None of those musicians need practice. A rehearsal will happen and be helpful though. Even if it's just a sound check. Dare I say Phil's ability to play these last few years dwindled while those around him augmented. However Phil's love of the music and the community remained strong and will be missing. I'm willing to step up and continue to honor that love without him.

I'd rather speculate on guests... Anders Osbourne, Karl Denson, John Scoffield, Joan Osborne, Chris Robinson, Stanley Jordon, Warren Haynes, Jackie Green, Ryan Adams, Mike Gordon, Trey, Jimmy Herring, Bob Weir...all possibilities
>>>Do the venues have exclusive contracts with promoters?<<<
Almost all do. At least in this region only the arenas and stadiums are free agents, but Shapiro could still easily co-promote with a local promoter if he wanted to, but why would he? He's an east coast guy doing it in his house, which is totally appropriate.
And I didn't mean to rain on anyone's parade. I think it's fine that the shows are happening and I'm sure there will be highlights and that those who go will enjoy them. I was just speaking for myself about what works, and what doesn't work as well for me personally.
I can see Graham putting something on at the Guild with the usual TXR personnel but nothing bigger than that. A shame, really but gone are the days of SF having a local impresario.
Warren is Not scheduled right now anywhere else So that's a great thing. It just sucks that shows like this and the Dickey Betts Memorial sell out so fast and to Bots/ Scalpers especially for folks who WORK during the day and have no access to a computer during these times, Good thing for Nugsnet, as im not paying exorbitant prices as much as I would like to be there. We will see...
if other people complaining about music quality, song choice or personnel "rains on your parade", maybe the philzone is not the best venue to host your parade. it rains A LOT here.
JUST ANNOUNCED! March winds are sure to blow our troubles away and take us back to the mid-2000s with an epic throwback lineup! great to see molitz back in tho. that dude does not play enough live music and often, ive found his more recent shows to be heavily, heavily undersold. ive seen that dude absolutely DEMOLISH a room thats only like 1/4 full. its a very strange dichotomy to see such full, ripping music played to such an empty and quiet room. really hope to catch some more particle shows some day. Grahame will be playing bass for that 17th.
Not sure about other nights.
Was thinking of going. The presale took a couple minutes to pop up, and then the good seats went so fast!
Oh well. Not sure how I feel anpout Q without Phil anyway.
Lol, I logged back in and got some decent ones. 4th row balcony on an aisle. I can do that.
I think we might try to go the night before too, long trip for one show.
Zooey, thank you so much for being the first sharer of information for us all when it matters most. I credit you very much with keeping this community alive.
Hey all. Got floor tix to the 17th for Drew, Suzy and me. Should be a blast. And yes, while Graham is not Phil, I am sure he is practicing night and day for his da and will do a phanatstic job on bass. Going 16th also. See you all there
