San Francisco is planning to welcome @deadandcompany to Golden Gate Park for three days in August, to mark the 60th anniversary of the Grateful Dead. Stay tuned for more details from the band 5/16!
I've only seen D&C once back in 2015 and am not interested in them at all, but I just booked a room at the Seal Rock Inn just because 1) it could serve as wife's bday present / our anniversary present, 2) I used to live in the Richmond district for many years and love that neighborhood, 3) I was at Bill Graham memorial and Jerry's wake, 4) it will get me out of ever going to the Sphere, and 5) I can always cancel.
I also saw D&C once about 10 years ago, and that was plenty for me.
I'd consider a day trip up for one of the shows if they're free, which I doubt they will be, but I'd pretty much be going for the scene and not the music.
A friend who has been to exactly one D$C show at the Sphere texted me last week about these shows and I told her there was no way they were happening because if they were I would have heard about them here.
This has more potential to be Highgate than Summer of Love.
Zang yes the mayor's announcement in that link had those dates.
Someone said it''s the week before Outside Lands so maybe they figure they can share infrastructure.
" Dead & Company are planning a concert in Golden Gate Park to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Grateful Dead forming in 1965. The San Francisco Recreation and Park Commission will vote on issuing a permit for the anniversary concert this Thursday (May 15), paving the way for Another Planet Entertainment to promote the historic concert 10 years after the band celebrated their 50th anniversary with the Fare Thee Well concerts at Soldier Field in Chicago and Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.
Little is known about the concert outside a line item on a Thursday commission agenda which schedules time for a “Discussion and possible action to authorize staff to issue a permit to Another Planet Entertainment, to hold three ticketed concerts to honor the 60th Anniversary in 2025 of the Grateful Dead featuring Dead & Company in the Golden Gate Park and Polo Fields.”
The Aug. 1-3 concert would take place one week before Another Planet stages the Outside Lands Festival, Aug. 8-10.
The concerts are expected to be attended by 60,000 fans per day. A formal announcement of the concert is expected after the commission votes on the permit on May 15."
They start setting up for Outside Lands weeks in advance. The entire area is fenced in. That festival runs very smoothly and has a ton of infrastructure as fas as food and beverage goes. It's a brilliant ideal to leverage all that. It won't be a clusterfuck at all and they have an opportunity to put a really nice event on.
I just got back from my second weekend this year at Sphere. The shows have been stellar! I for one am psyched for these shows!
>>>can't imagine how they will fence off the Polo Fields for D&C. Do they hire an army of security guards<<<
They will put up a fence all around the perimeter of the field, and yes.
>>>The concerts are expected to be attended by 60,000 fans per day<<<
The Polo Field can hold 300,000+ so if they only sell 60,000 tix it will be a very roomy scene, but I would expect them to put capacity somewhere between 75,000 - 100,000. Based on the popularity of that band and the current situation where it is now not only mainstream acceptable but super cool to be a dead head, they could easily sell out 75,000 tix a day at $300.
>>>Maybe Lance will come out of retirement for this one and let us sneak in thru a hole in the fence<<<
Not gonna' happen, but I wouldn't do that even if I did.
Personally, I'd love to be there but I doubt I'll be able to make any based on the hassles of getting in & out, but I think it's very cool that this is going to happen and I would expect the scene and the shows to be very good and very memorable.
To me it won't be a 60th anniversary deal, it will be a celebration of the ongoing legacy of the band, an honoring of the fact that they have now been gone as long as they existed and yet are still as popular (or more) today as they ever were, 30 years after they stopped.
i had pretty easy times(relative to SF in general) parking in the surrounding streets when i used to go to hsbg back when hellman was alive. i always found something in the 10 blocks south of polo fields
Jerry Day is on August 2. Guaranteed to be fun and affordable. Melvin and Stu will deliver the goods. Jerry Garcia Amphitheater, McLaren Park, that's where I will be!
"San Francisco is keen on keeping the party going in Golden Gate Park this August, with a series of free concerts dedicated to arguably The City’s most iconic band.
Local officials want to honor the Grateful Dead’s 60th anniversary this year with a trio of Dead & Company concerts at the Polo Field. The proposal, which Mayor Daniel Lurie and The City’s Recreation and Park Department introduced Monday, calls for three ticketed Dead & Company shows at the Polo Field between Aug 1-3."
i forsee this being my last hoo-rah, not with gd music in general, but with what remains of the artifice of an official "dead show". theres lots of other great, and often better live music out there ATM, but its still a unique and singular experience and im pretty sure these will be my last.
that'd be to far from the actual end for me. this isnt some next phase of my life or swearing off of going to dead shows for some reason or another, i just doubt there will be any more bay area/norcal shows or lineups id really want to travel for before the jig is genuinely up and the last 3 retire or check out that really fit the bill of a "dead show" in any meaningful way. which isnt to say that there wont be some kind of dead related thing that's musically as good or better, but IME there's always been a pretty universal understanding among a majority of fans which tour or band at the time is the "main" one and IME those shows do provide a unique vibe and experience, for better or for worse. also for better or for worse, maybe for worse, that band ATM is deadco...and there probably wont be another.
i never really saw deadco much at all during their lifetime, and as of now aside from an ill fated experience in marysville that involved john mayer scat singing during hes gone, those shows at niners stadium were my last ones also. however its just never felt right to me to have some kind of end of the road experience while there's still like a decade of tours still to be had...even if those tours weren't really my thing. ive always expected to have at least a few more experiences with shows like that and since im not gonna fly to vegas to see john mayer, it seems like this is it. ill still see JRAD and while i vastly prefer their music, its very much not the same kind of thing.
Fare Thee Well??? But, to quote so many knowledgeable "experienced" dead heads back in 2015, "What total fucking BULLSHIT!!!! Is there no end to the greed and stupidity that has taken over from the Grateful Dead?"
Which BTW is the same thing that many dead heads of certain ages were saying in the 70's, 80's & 90's.
I'd say that a fair response to that now in 2025, just as in all those other various times is......... they're just concerts folks. That's all they are. Just concerts. And probably/maybe these will be pretty good ones that many people will enjoy.
But either way, maybe some people should ask themselves why these particular concerts upset them so much.
The endless, often desperate human need to feel superior is a fascinating subject, something I've tripped on most of my life, something that because of endless examples from myself and others I'll continue to trip on until my time is done.
In this particular case, again folks, they're just concerts. Concerts that many, many, many people will enjoy, concerts that will to some real degree be connected to that place and a time from long ago, concerts that will make new memories, concerts that will bring needed money to the park, the neighborhood and the city. Concerts that won't affect anyone who doesn't go in any way.
So go and have fun. Or don't go and tell yourselves you know better.
But in the end they're just going to be concerts, which in my personal experience is at the very least a fun thing to participate in.
God forbid people use the Grateful Dead to have fun.
I've only seen Furthur in the park. Missed both Bill Graham and Jerry Memorial for family obligations. I'm going for the party and to hang out with friends. I'm not expecting to have my face melted.
I just don't see how this will be free, my guess is the "free" part of the headline is error/rumor/wishful thinking. The production costs of this are just huge and it's not like there's enough time to line up corporate sponsors and all that. I expect we'll pay to play.
its the weekend before outside lands, so im guessing lots of infrastructure will be set up for OL, used for these shows, and will then be left up for OL, which will absorb a lot of the cost of putting on the deadco shows.
probably wouldn't be viable on any other weekend, and its also likely that the OL vending infrastructure, or at least part of it, will be set up to sell food merch and trinkets to bring in some cash. then on top of that the city obviously has some amount of funds available to host free public events that increase foot traffic to local businesses and whatnot.
i can see those 3 factors coming together to cover a lot or all of the costs for these shows. infrastructure already paid for via a paid festival, festival style food/trinket vending, plus some city funds. maybe we'll see some other paid comfort services or something. maybe a ben-gay station or vending machine?
Editor’s note: A previous version of this story incorrectly said the concerts were free. They are not free, although prices have not yet been revealed.
I don't think AlanR map is correct. The stage will be on the western end of polo fields. A few years back the city tore up that section of grass and soccer field to install a concrete load-in to accommodate future concerts...
concerts like the Ben & Jerry shows and Bill Grahamn memorial were staged in the middle of northern end of the field
I totally thought you were joking until i zoomed in. Stunning and a complete opposite of the Grateful Dead ethos, but this isn't Grateful Dead even though it's a 60 year anniversary?
Guess i'm going to need to just listen to the music play.
ive seen the photos from fakedown at the sphere. might be shooting yourself in the foot to bring it up to the city council. just play dumb, stfu and shakedown will happen where it happens
Sad, perhaps, but inevitable mostly. If you track the growing popularity/mainstreaming of the GD from about the mid-80s on, where we're at now shouldn't come as too much of a surprise.
Jerry Day is free to attend. Donations are requested and accepted to support the annual event and local community, but you can show up regardless and enjoy the day.
This 'new sound system' appears to be the complete opposite of the wall of sound (with it's reported 1/4 mile clear as rain sound).
This new one will have 3 yards of 'clear as rain' sound then you will be SOL....
60th anniversary celebration with VIP, SUPER VIP, etc feels like the opposite of the Grateful Dead vibe. I was just reading the Dell'Amico book repeating how Jerry always wanted
fair ticket prices. The reported '$199 GA' doesn't seem fair to me, that's what I paid in 2015 for Fare Thee Well, floor, Levi's Stadium.
Well if it's the same sound system they use at Frost to keep the neighbors from complaining then it means that anywhere behind the sound board you are at a picnic where there might be a concert nearby.
The Sage and Spirit Wine Tent has been announced, including free WiFi to all VIP attendees.
The featured pour is a vibrant red, sourced from John's private label.
Tasting notes include: A wine as smooth and self-aware as John Mayer’s Instagram Live sessions, it is served slightly chilled—just like your expectations.
No one asked me, but what they should do is broadcast the show on local FM radio so locals and visitors without hundreds of dollars can enjoy other parts of Golden Gate Park and listen on their transistor radios and vintage boomboxes. (Until they freeze to death in the foggy evening.) These folks get their "free" show in the park. Hippie Hill and Haight Street will be hoppin.
People who want to pay to see, or be inside the fences, can. They'll sell out.
I was under the impression they sold out long ago.
D&C's concert revenues over the last 10 years amount to about a half a billion dollars. They had a great opportunity here to give back to the community and secure their legacy as being all about the music, but I guess that would have conflicted with their business model.
^^^Man what a deal, only $108 for that Stealie Polo! Woot!
StoneSculptor,
I fully endorse your idea. They should air all three shows on KFOG (oh right they have been long gone for almost six years now)
I could see them doing this on SiriusXM Grateful Dead channel but of course that's not free and open to the public.
At least it sounds like AC/DC hasn't lost a step and they are all not far from Weirs age. If they (DeadCo) promised to speed it up like 1985 would anyone be more interested?

When you sign up to be one of Irving Azoff's corporate test tube babies, the guiding focus is on generating revenue. DeadCo is a hippie version of The Eagles, raking in beaucoup bucks on the back of nostalgia.

Factor in upgrades over the basic and VIP packages, and you're closing in on 50 million for three shows. In the park. I can't decide if I'm disgusted, or just amused.
Why would you be disgusted? I can't fathom that. Go if you think it wil be fun or don't go and STFU. The following weekend is Outside Lands which will have pretty much the same pricing structure for a host of bands you never even heard of.
So I hope I'm wrong about this because I don't wish the economic storm that I think is coming on people, but I don't feel like these shows are going to sell out. Not for any aesthetic reasons but only because folks are pulling back particularly because a lot of people just blew their wad on Sphere shows. That and the fact that the only seats are in VIP and that is a long time to stand on a wind swept foggy field after what will almost always be a long walk there and an even longer walk home. I mean this audience isn't getting any younger.
I bet Billy will show up at Jerry Day.. just sayin but yeah Gate Crashing Is the New Cool , Fuck those Bastards..245 bucks . slip under the fence or pick up tickets on the ground Those That go are privileged.I'm seein BMFS 4 times in October total ticket price is about 180.for 8 sets of GOAT ! oh and Fuck they're Vip gluten lactose free . Free? ya right ha ha ha so fuckin funny I forgot to laugh
Tommy, maybe? It probably depends on who is headlining the JD thingy. He did sit in with SGP last year, but that was just a few blocks away from the Greek. It would be cool as hell if he did!
Come to think of it wasn't that last minute addition to the Singer Songwriter Circle with Emmylou, Steve Earle and Jackson Brown on the day before his band played Frost? Good odds if it doesn't conflict with his schedule.
I advise you to visit San Francisco. One of the world's greatest cities.
~ It probably depends on who is headlining the JD thingy. ~
It will be Melvin and JGB, and Stu Allen and Mars Hotel, as has been the case for many years. I will not expect many, if any, "special guests", but what we get will be just exactly perfect. The dynamic this year will most certainly be a bit different with Dead $ Co also playing across town in Golden Gate Park.
Philn -- I've read in a tourist guidebook that the Meatshack is a kabob place with big portions. If you are partial to that cuisine, be sure to ask for a "Super Large Hungry Man stick" delivered to your hotel room. One should fill you up .
And rhe Tenderloin is known for its unique method of preparing and tenderizing mouthwatering steaks. You can ask any local, "Where's the best place to get my meat pounded?" They'll be happy to direct you to an out of the way establishment.
This is about the 60's but seems appropriate for 2025 as well
"There was madness in any direction, at any hour. If not across the Bay, then up the Golden Gate or down 101 to Los Altos or La Honda. . . . You could strike sparks anywhere. There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was right, that we were winning. . .
And that, I think, was the handle—that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn’t need that. Our energy would simply prevail. There was no point in fighting—on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. . . .
So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark—that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back."
I realize the volunteers receive free passes but the notion of picking up nasty festival trash (particularly on the 10PM to 2:30AM shift) to just get tickets?
I can see the original meetings around this company. "Get this everyone, we will call our waste collection company Clean Vibes to get people to work for free. They won't just be picking up garbage, they will be saving the planet through all of their groovy ass collection vibes!".
It's brilliant. I can imagine the coin these people are making.
Fees/Deposit: An NON-REFUNDABLE application/processing fee of $40.00 is due upon submission of the application below. Next, after your application is completed you will be able to submit your deposit of $580.00 You must submit the deposit of $580.00 to confirm your volunteer position, it's based on a first come first serve basis.
i kinda want to sign up for the cleanup and then just fuck off when i get in. i wonder how many people do that kinda thing for these sorts of gigs in general. lance? got any of that sweet innie info on the subject of people signing up to volunteer in bad faith?
They thought of that, hence the refundable deposit. I'm more interested in signing up to be the official checker-offer / bribe taker, determining who gets their deposit back.
This is a better shot of the Polo Field in action. I think it's pretty far out.
In my experience the Polo Field is a great large outdoor venue. The vibe & energy are excellent, because it's sunk down a bit and is surrounded by trees the sound is always good even towards the back, and when it's dark they light the trees in various colors. There is also often a layer of fog hanging low over the space and that gets lit up as well, it's very cool.
I had a great time when Furthur played there and every show I've ever seen there, which is many over many years, has worked.
I seriously doubt that I'll make it to any of the shows, too much hassle for me these days, but I'm betting that the shows will be good and those who go will be glad they did.
BTW, along the right side of this photo you can see a road running through the trees almost parallel to the field. If you look close you can see a small pond next to the road, just past the back right corner of the field. That's where Garcia got busted.

Middle Drive.
It's actually a good spot to pull over to do heroin or whatever. His mistake was the outdated registration.
If you're up to no good, always make sure your vehicle is up to code.
I think you nailed it, Alan. I don't understand why they're doing this in the park instead of somewhere like Levi's Stadium, unless they're trying to hearken back to the days of flatbeds and free shows, which this event most certainly ain't.
Out on the street today I saw a breathtakingly beautiful twenty something year old young lady in a Grateful Dead tee shirt. She wore it well. She was obviously not yet born when the Grateful Dead were a living band.
I intuit that she represents the demographic these shows are being marketed to. Her and a couple of handfuls of Techno Touch Heads with enough money to buy $30,000 - $75,000 luxury suites.
First and second generation Dead Heads of more modest, or at least, more prudent means, maybe not so much.
Who is seriously excited about these shows? Anybody have that sense of urgency to jump through hoops to secure tickets? That feeling we would get when the Grateful Dead announced a New Years Eve or Halloween show, a run at Radio City Music Hall, or the Warfield, or Phil and Friends playing a couple of shows at Bimbo's, or a run by the Q in the Grate Room?
There will be single day tickets. They say 60,000 but I still think they'll have room in the permits to push that to 75,000.
And they're doing it the park almost certainly because the people at Another Planet are smart. They are already totally hooked in with the city's aggressive campaign to put on more events, so I'm betting that they figured they're already setting up for Outside Lands so why not just get started a week early, take advantage of the general Jerry birthday fervor, the faux "anniversary" and the immense current popularity of Dead & Co and put on some shows that would be slam-dunks to sell.
Good for them, good for the city, good for fans who love that band.
As for so many who have different ideas of what the shows SHOULD be, in 2025 those ideas are complete fantasy. Just a dream that would never happen in this day & age, not if Jerry were still alive, not if Bill Graham were still alive, not ever.
So go and have a good time, or don't go and it will be as if they didn't happen at all.
Or come to SF that weekend, "boycott" D$C and go to Jerry Day (it's FREE!!!) and/or go to the two Melvin shows at the Great American Music Hall and then the Axial Tilt 3-set, five hour GD tribute show with Kadlecik, Joan Osborne and others, also at the Great American.
I think the black screen's general lack of enthusiasm for D&C is pretty well established at this point, except for Woz of course. Was there even a thread for their recent run of Sphere shows?
Lather was thirty years old today
They took away all of his toys
His mother sent newspaper clippings to him
About his old friends who'd stopped being boys
There was Harwitz E. Green, just turned thirty-three
His leather chair waits at the bank
And Seargent Dow Jones, twenty-seven years old
Commanding his very own tank
But Lather still finds it a nice thing to do
To lie about nude in the sand
Drawing pictures of mountains that look like bumps
And thrashing the air with his hands
But wait, Lather's productive you know
He produces the finest of sound
Putting drumsticks on either side of his nose
Snorting the best licks in town
But that's all over
Lather was thirty years old today
And Lather came foam from his tongue
He looked at me eyes wide and plainly said
Is it true that I'm no longer young?
And the children call him famous
What the old men call insane
And sometimes he's so nameless
That he hardly knows which game to play, which words to say
And I should have told him
No, you're not old
And I should have let him go on
Smiling babywide

Grateful Dead music with Phil Lesh was chess. Remove the esteemed leader and it's merely checkers. Sure it's fun to move the pieces around but at the end of the day, it's child's play.
>>>Grateful Dead music with Phil Lesh was chess. Remove the esteemed leader and it's merely checkers.
Even Phil wouldn't be able to salvage this. The 50th anniversary shows featured Bobby still playing too slow, Trey afraid to let loose on jams and Mickey coked up like it was 1985. Not a great combo. Phil and the drummers weren't on the best of terms around then. Hopefully they made amends before he died. But I recall seeing Phil on the jumbotron more than once cringing when a jam didn't go the way he intended. That's what happens when you don't rehearse.
But the atmosphere in Chicago for those shows was awesome. The Dead truly took over the city that entire weekend. I had a hotel in the business district and heads were running tanks in the middle of the day on the sidewalk while people in suits and briefcases walked around them.
There’s a buzz in the air — the kind that rattles your teeth and makes your skin itch in a good way.
The idea is simple and savage: load a bus with the faithful, the fearless, and the criminally underemployed, point it north, and storm the Golden Gate Park Dead & Company shows like it’s 1966 and reality is optional.
This Facebook group — this digital acid test — has the horsepower to pull it off. Ventura Deadheads, it’s time to crawl out of the wreckage of Skull and Roses and blaze headlong into the 60th year of Grateful Dead music — full Prankster tilt — no brakes, no apologies, and no boring people allowed.
The Vegas residency is dead and gone — the circus has packed up and moved on. San Francisco is calling.
Now, I’m not here to spoon-feed you. I’m here to ask:
Do you want to pile into a questionable bus and charge into San Francisco to see the Grateful Dead with John Mayer — or do you want to stay home and rot in the glow of your own television?
This isn’t about logistics. It’s about velocity. About momentum. About slapping a few bucks together, getting a driver with a valid license and questionable judgment (most school buses don’t need a CDL if you know what you’re doing), and embracing the chaos.
No map, no plan, just the road and the music.
We’re not organizing a field trip — we’re launching an unsanctioned pilgrimage to the heart of the madness.
i hope the 60,000 deadheads that have never heard of or listened to sturgil can shut the fuck up long enough to be exposed to an ARTIST in his prime. same goes for silly strings.
Alan showed good foresight by booking early at Seal Rocks Inn. Looks scenic, and a reasonable walk to the Polo Fields. They were all booked up by now. I poked around and booked a room at the San Remo Hotel in North Beach, which had good reviews and a decent price. I hope the bus route to Golden Gate Park is easy, as I don't think my bum knee would like that walk. I can cancel for free up through July 30th.
So, I got a 3 Day GA Ticket. I also have an opportunity to sublet a room just a block from GGP at a reasonable rate, need to decide if I wanna stay in SF for a week or 2, 3 or 4 weeks?!?! Having lived in SF for the 1990s decade, it would be great to reconnect with a lot of old friends, haunts and maybe run up to Seattle to see my niece and/or down to Big Sur to soak up all that Beauty...
One day you will be convinced to go to a show and it will all become clear. I remember last summer when Doogs finally went after missing a handful and said he'd never miss another bay area show.
Counter point - the arena shows are not my jam and the jockeying for the small shows are long past my time. But if you can find a good medium sized venue, it's well worth it
OK - back to the regularly scheduled program. I guess good for booby and the legacy of the dead catalog. As someone else pointed out, we're nearing the hinge point of the dead being gone longer than they were here. It's not my jam but I'm glad someone is enjoying it.
the next challenge -- how to rig a warm jacket (for the night) into a something comfortable to sit on (for the afternoon). hmmmmm.... maybe if I load the sleeves with tent poles and sneak in some duct tape I can construct a little mini chair...
So..I heard a rumor that Dead and Co will play at Stanford Stadium (football stadium, not the Frost). The Stadium just hosted it's first concert in many years, pretty successfully. Coldplay was there this past weekend.
The Frost is the better venue, but for the larger touring acts I'm glad that there will be another venue in the Bay Area, and it's certainly more appealing than Levi's Stadium. Billy Strings at the Stadium would be alright.
How about a pocketful of balloons to blow up once you're inside, and then contain them in a large plastic garbage bag? I'm thinking the lawn and leaf size with a cinch-tie.
Not exactly a bean bag, but it might be close.
This reminds me of the Q show at the Frost in 2002. Some older freaks from Oregon somehow brought in a ratty old couch that they plopped down in the shade on the side.
I don't remember chairs or related ever being a problem at the Jerry wake or the Bill Graham memorial or Ben and Jerry's shows or the Summer of Love anniversaries.....I know, I'm so last century..... god forbid you treat people like responsible adults who just paid a small fortune to go to your concert in the park.....
Yeah I like bss and fishcane' ideas. I was thinkin of those. I wonder it they're allowed. Not that I couldn't buy stuff in SF, but I kinda need something I can carry on the airplane. Something inflatable is still intriguing. Blow it up and zipper that up in one of those transparent backpacks and sit on that, maybe. Speaking of inflatables, I wonder what happened to my portable Phil's Chair chair?
But scratch the beach ball idea - I hate when those things go bouncin around. If they let me carry a knife in, I'd use it to dispose of those.
I'm for instituting segregated seating for a 60th Anniversary show: Closest to stage - heads that saw PigPen (comes with those folding rocking chairs). Next section back: heads that saw Keith and Donna (with hammocks). Followed by Brent heads (camp chairs) and then Vinne heads (cushions). In the rear: non-GD heads (blankets).
And plenty of free shirts for anyone over 50 that say,"Don't call Rock Med. I'm not havin a seizure --- I'm dancin."
Bss - I'm not an invalid. I just suffer from the relatively common "old man shrinking ass syndrome." I don't know what happened to it. I think the ass fat transforms to ear hairs. I dunno.
And strollers are expressly forbidden -- but that PVC frame could easily be filled with tequila....

It won't be a clusterfuck at all and they have an opportunity to put a really nice event on.

>>>can't imagine how they
>>>can't imagine how they will fence off the Polo Fields for D&C.
That's fucking amazing, and pretty fucking great.
Long live the Grateful Dead!!!!!!!

The proposal, which Mayor Daniel Lurie and The City’s Recreation and Park Department introduced Monday, calls for three ticketed Dead & Company shows at the Polo Field between Aug 1-3."

that'd be to far from the
that'd be to far from the actual end for me. this isnt some next phase of my life or swearing off of going to dead shows for some reason or another, i just doubt there will be any more bay area/norcal shows or lineups id really want to travel for before the jig is genuinely up and the last 3 retire or check out that really fit the bill of a "dead show" in any meaningful way. which isnt to say that there wont be some kind of dead related thing that's musically as good or better, but IME there's always been a pretty universal understanding among a majority of fans which tour or band at the time is the "main" one and IME those shows do provide a unique vibe and experience, for better or for worse. also for better or for worse, maybe for worse, that band ATM is deadco...and there probably wont be another.
i never really saw deadco much at all during their lifetime, and as of now aside from an ill fated experience in marysville that involved john mayer scat singing during hes gone, those shows at niners stadium were my last ones also. however its just never felt right to me to have some kind of end of the road experience while there's still like a decade of tours still to be had...even if those tours weren't really my thing. ive always expected to have at least a few more experiences with shows like that and since im not gonna fly to vegas to see john mayer, it seems like this is it. ill still see JRAD and while i vastly prefer their music, its very much not the same kind of thing.

>>>I said Fare Thee Well at Niners stadium<<<
Go to the fuckin' show.

its the weekend before
its the weekend before outside lands, so im guessing lots of infrastructure will be set up for OL, used for these shows, and will then be left up for OL, which will absorb a lot of the cost of putting on the deadco shows.
probably wouldn't be viable on any other weekend, and its also likely that the OL vending infrastructure, or at least part of it, will be set up to sell food merch and trinkets to bring in some cash. then on top of that the city obviously has some amount of funds available to host free public events that increase foot traffic to local businesses and whatnot.
i can see those 3 factors coming together to cover a lot or all of the costs for these shows. infrastructure already paid for via a paid festival, festival style food/trinket vending, plus some city funds. maybe we'll see some other paid comfort services or something. maybe a ben-gay station or vending machine?

No one asked me, but what they should do is broadcast the show on local FM radio so locals and visitors without hundreds of dollars can enjoy other parts of Golden Gate Park and listen on their transistor radios and vintage boomboxes. (Until they freeze to death in the foggy evening.) These folks get their "free" show in the park. Hippie Hill and Haight Street will be hoppin.

D&C's concert revenues over the last 10 years amount to about a half a billion dollars. They had a great opportunity here to give back to the community and secure their legacy as being all about the music, but I guess that would have conflicted with their business model.

Out on the street today I saw

There will be single day
There will be single day tickets.
They're just shows after all.

Lather
Lather
Lather was thirty years old today
They took away all of his toys
His mother sent newspaper clippings to him
About his old friends who'd stopped being boys
There was Harwitz E. Green, just turned thirty-three
His leather chair waits at the bank
And Seargent Dow Jones, twenty-seven years old
Commanding his very own tank
But Lather still finds it a nice thing to do
To lie about nude in the sand
Drawing pictures of mountains that look like bumps
And thrashing the air with his hands
But wait, Lather's productive you know
He produces the finest of sound
Putting drumsticks on either side of his nose
Snorting the best licks in town
But that's all over
Lather was thirty years old today
And Lather came foam from his tongue
He looked at me eyes wide and plainly said
Is it true that I'm no longer young?
And the children call him famous
What the old men call insane
And sometimes he's so nameless
That he hardly knows which game to play, which words to say
And I should have told him
No, you're not old
And I should have let him go on
Smiling babywide

From "Ventura Deadheads" FB
From "Ventura Deadheads" FB page:
Who's coming?

Counter point - the arena shows are not my jam and the jockeying for the small shows are long past my time. But if you can find a good medium sized venue, it's well worth it
