San Francisco is planning to welcome @deadandcompany to Golden Gate Park for three days in August, to mark the 60th anniversary of the Grateful Dead. Stay tuned for more details from the band 5/16!
I've only seen D&C once back in 2015 and am not interested in them at all, but I just booked a room at the Seal Rock Inn just because 1) it could serve as wife's bday present / our anniversary present, 2) I used to live in the Richmond district for many years and love that neighborhood, 3) I was at Bill Graham memorial and Jerry's wake, 4) it will get me out of ever going to the Sphere, and 5) I can always cancel.
I also saw D&C once about 10 years ago, and that was plenty for me.
I'd consider a day trip up for one of the shows if they're free, which I doubt they will be, but I'd pretty much be going for the scene and not the music.
A friend who has been to exactly one D$C show at the Sphere texted me last week about these shows and I told her there was no way they were happening because if they were I would have heard about them here.
This has more potential to be Highgate than Summer of Love.
Zang yes the mayor's announcement in that link had those dates.
Someone said it''s the week before Outside Lands so maybe they figure they can share infrastructure.
" Dead & Company are planning a concert in Golden Gate Park to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Grateful Dead forming in 1965. The San Francisco Recreation and Park Commission will vote on issuing a permit for the anniversary concert this Thursday (May 15), paving the way for Another Planet Entertainment to promote the historic concert 10 years after the band celebrated their 50th anniversary with the Fare Thee Well concerts at Soldier Field in Chicago and Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.
Little is known about the concert outside a line item on a Thursday commission agenda which schedules time for a “Discussion and possible action to authorize staff to issue a permit to Another Planet Entertainment, to hold three ticketed concerts to honor the 60th Anniversary in 2025 of the Grateful Dead featuring Dead & Company in the Golden Gate Park and Polo Fields.”
The Aug. 1-3 concert would take place one week before Another Planet stages the Outside Lands Festival, Aug. 8-10.
The concerts are expected to be attended by 60,000 fans per day. A formal announcement of the concert is expected after the commission votes on the permit on May 15."
They start setting up for Outside Lands weeks in advance. The entire area is fenced in. That festival runs very smoothly and has a ton of infrastructure as fas as food and beverage goes. It's a brilliant ideal to leverage all that. It won't be a clusterfuck at all and they have an opportunity to put a really nice event on.
I just got back from my second weekend this year at Sphere. The shows have been stellar! I for one am psyched for these shows!
>>>can't imagine how they will fence off the Polo Fields for D&C. Do they hire an army of security guards<<<
They will put up a fence all around the perimeter of the field, and yes.
>>>The concerts are expected to be attended by 60,000 fans per day<<<
The Polo Field can hold 300,000+ so if they only sell 60,000 tix it will be a very roomy scene, but I would expect them to put capacity somewhere between 75,000 - 100,000. Based on the popularity of that band and the current situation where it is now not only mainstream acceptable but super cool to be a dead head, they could easily sell out 75,000 tix a day at $300.
>>>Maybe Lance will come out of retirement for this one and let us sneak in thru a hole in the fence<<<
Not gonna' happen, but I wouldn't do that even if I did.
Personally, I'd love to be there but I doubt I'll be able to make any based on the hassles of getting in & out, but I think it's very cool that this is going to happen and I would expect the scene and the shows to be very good and very memorable.
To me it won't be a 60th anniversary deal, it will be a celebration of the ongoing legacy of the band, an honoring of the fact that they have now been gone as long as they existed and yet are still as popular (or more) today as they ever were, 30 years after they stopped.
i had pretty easy times(relative to SF in general) parking in the surrounding streets when i used to go to hsbg back when hellman was alive. i always found something in the 10 blocks south of polo fields
Jerry Day is on August 2. Guaranteed to be fun and affordable. Melvin and Stu will deliver the goods. Jerry Garcia Amphitheater, McLaren Park, that's where I will be!
"San Francisco is keen on keeping the party going in Golden Gate Park this August, with a series of free concerts dedicated to arguably The City’s most iconic band.
Local officials want to honor the Grateful Dead’s 60th anniversary this year with a trio of Dead & Company concerts at the Polo Field. The proposal, which Mayor Daniel Lurie and The City’s Recreation and Park Department introduced Monday, calls for three ticketed Dead & Company shows at the Polo Field between Aug 1-3."
i forsee this being my last hoo-rah, not with gd music in general, but with what remains of the artifice of an official "dead show". theres lots of other great, and often better live music out there ATM, but its still a unique and singular experience and im pretty sure these will be my last.
that'd be to far from the actual end for me. this isnt some next phase of my life or swearing off of going to dead shows for some reason or another, i just doubt there will be any more bay area/norcal shows or lineups id really want to travel for before the jig is genuinely up and the last 3 retire or check out that really fit the bill of a "dead show" in any meaningful way. which isnt to say that there wont be some kind of dead related thing that's musically as good or better, but IME there's always been a pretty universal understanding among a majority of fans which tour or band at the time is the "main" one and IME those shows do provide a unique vibe and experience, for better or for worse. also for better or for worse, maybe for worse, that band ATM is deadco...and there probably wont be another.
i never really saw deadco much at all during their lifetime, and as of now aside from an ill fated experience in marysville that involved john mayer scat singing during hes gone, those shows at niners stadium were my last ones also. however its just never felt right to me to have some kind of end of the road experience while there's still like a decade of tours still to be had...even if those tours weren't really my thing. ive always expected to have at least a few more experiences with shows like that and since im not gonna fly to vegas to see john mayer, it seems like this is it. ill still see JRAD and while i vastly prefer their music, its very much not the same kind of thing.
Fare Thee Well??? But, to quote so many knowledgeable "experienced" dead heads back in 2015, "What total fucking BULLSHIT!!!! Is there no end to the greed and stupidity that has taken over from the Grateful Dead?"
Which BTW is the same thing that many dead heads of certain ages were saying in the 70's, 80's & 90's.
I'd say that a fair response to that now in 2025, just as in all those other various times is......... they're just concerts folks. That's all they are. Just concerts. And probably/maybe these will be pretty good ones that many people will enjoy.
But either way, maybe some people should ask themselves why these particular concerts upset them so much.
The endless, often desperate human need to feel superior is a fascinating subject, something I've tripped on most of my life, something that because of endless examples from myself and others I'll continue to trip on until my time is done.
In this particular case, again folks, they're just concerts. Concerts that many, many, many people will enjoy, concerts that will to some real degree be connected to that place and a time from long ago, concerts that will make new memories, concerts that will bring needed money to the park, the neighborhood and the city. Concerts that won't affect anyone who doesn't go in any way.
So go and have fun. Or don't go and tell yourselves you know better.
But in the end they're just going to be concerts, which in my personal experience is at the very least a fun thing to participate in.
God forbid people use the Grateful Dead to have fun.
I've only seen Furthur in the park. Missed both Bill Graham and Jerry Memorial for family obligations. I'm going for the party and to hang out with friends. I'm not expecting to have my face melted.
I just don't see how this will be free, my guess is the "free" part of the headline is error/rumor/wishful thinking. The production costs of this are just huge and it's not like there's enough time to line up corporate sponsors and all that. I expect we'll pay to play.
its the weekend before outside lands, so im guessing lots of infrastructure will be set up for OL, used for these shows, and will then be left up for OL, which will absorb a lot of the cost of putting on the deadco shows.
probably wouldn't be viable on any other weekend, and its also likely that the OL vending infrastructure, or at least part of it, will be set up to sell food merch and trinkets to bring in some cash. then on top of that the city obviously has some amount of funds available to host free public events that increase foot traffic to local businesses and whatnot.
i can see those 3 factors coming together to cover a lot or all of the costs for these shows. infrastructure already paid for via a paid festival, festival style food/trinket vending, plus some city funds. maybe we'll see some other paid comfort services or something. maybe a ben-gay station or vending machine?
Editor’s note: A previous version of this story incorrectly said the concerts were free. They are not free, although prices have not yet been revealed.
I don't think AlanR map is correct. The stage will be on the western end of polo fields. A few years back the city tore up that section of grass and soccer field to install a concrete load-in to accommodate future concerts...
concerts like the Ben & Jerry shows and Bill Grahamn memorial were staged in the middle of northern end of the field
I totally thought you were joking until i zoomed in. Stunning and a complete opposite of the Grateful Dead ethos, but this isn't Grateful Dead even though it's a 60 year anniversary?
Guess i'm going to need to just listen to the music play.

The stage is on the same end
The stage is on the same end of the Polo where I first saw Grateful Dead on May 7 1969- with Jefferson Airplane. How ironic.
Seal Rock Inn- I used to catch the 38 Geary there back in those days also. Glad they reopened it.
I shall not attend - but I do sorely miss that great city.

I don't think AlanR map is
I don't think AlanR map is correct. The stage will be on the western end of polo fields. A few years back the city tore up that section of grass and soccer field to install a concrete load-in to accommodate future concerts...
concerts like the Ben & Jerry shows and Bill Grahamn memorial were staged in the middle of northern end of the field
paved paradise...

Klondike - you can believe anything I post that starts with the words, "I once.....". Or stuff about stone carving and holography,
Anything posted next to a picture is sketchy. That map is from the 1983 Women's Lacrosse League Championships Afterparty. Good times.

I totally thought you were joking until i zoomed in. Stunning and a complete opposite of the Grateful Dead ethos, but this isn't Grateful Dead even though it's a 60 year anniversary?
