Im always blown away at all birds' nest building abilities. It isn't something that the parents teach them. It is inherent knowledge. From hummingbirds to eagles, It's astonoshing that with nothing more than materials from their surrounding environment, they can build the perfect structure for nesting, egg laying, hatching and development of their offspring. Able to withstand almost anything mother nature throws at it as well. Truly remarkable.

Number 2 today

Go Jackie!

Tuned in & I just caught Jackie & Shadow changing places.

Thank you

A Big Bear eagle egg has been lost, but hope for more eggs remains.

Ravens visited the famous aerie after Jackie and Shadow left their eggs unattended for a few hours.

Balance of nature ....

From today's entry in today's Recap Report:

Eagles typically lay only one clutch of eggs per year, but they are biologically capable of producing a second, known as a replacement clutch, if the first set is lost early in the nesting season. Big Bear’s eagles Jackie and Shadow laid a replacement clutch in February 2021 after their eggs were lost to Ravens. Bald eagles are considered “indeterminate layers.” If an egg is broken or removed early in the laying cycle, touch sensors in their brood patch may detect its absence and fail to trigger the “off” switch, allowing the female to continue producing eggs.

paging Mike Edwards. Hello. Any news to report?

Different Mike but...

New Egg !- Egg # 1  / Clutch # 2

Thanks, Mike, and good timing, roland. Looks like this new egg just came today. I've been checking the nest semi-frequently, and was losing hope for this year.

I looked earlier today, Jackie & Shadow were both there early morning smiley

.....I also saw the Raven checking out the nest a couple days ago. angry

No news is good news. Pip watch begins March 31st.

Big Bear is heading into some fine spring weather this week, with temps in the low 70s.

Screenshot_20260322_093435.jpg

A pip was observed earlier this morning. Hatching is underway.

Good morning!

Hatching and a Pip!

The first egg is still in the process of hatching, it is not considered hatched until it is completely free of the egg shell. The chick has popped its head out of the shell to say a happy hatch day to mom and dad!

It also appears that the second egg has a pip. It is not well defined as of this morning, but we will likely see more progress throughout the day.

Congratulations Jackie & Shadow, their work has just begun.

Thank you again for following this grand journey of Jackie and Shadow.

The FOBBV Team

Nice. They have a few more days of sweet spring weather before things cool off with a chance of some precipitation late next week.

"How do you like your eggs?" takes on a new meaning here.

It's a beautiful thing!

They had a nice feeding at about 7:00 Pacific time. Nice to see the second one up and standing and being fed. They're on their way!

The nation will be captivated once again with an added bonus - getting educated about habitat protection this year with the threatened sale of land.

wow just got caught up on this thread and reading the big bear valley website.

didn't notice mention of backpacking / hiking trails/ tent camping -- is that even possible on this sensitive land ?
noticed there are flying squirrels -- never seen one!

Big Bear Lake is surrounded by San Bernardino National Forest, so there's lots of backpacking, hiking trails, and tent camping in the area.

While checking the nest cam this morning, I clicked this suggested link, and got sucked right into it. The Monterey Bay Aquarium Live Jelly Cam:

It's the best thing on the internet! Hope these chicks make it all the way. Last year's experience - watching the chicks take flight from the nest - was the best thing ever!!!

Fascinating watching fierce looking eagles gently caring for the floofs. I don't like when they both leave the nest.

> I don't like when they both leave the nest.

After the raven raid earlier this year, I've started checking the blog before the video.

That battle with the ravens yesterday was a bit concerning. Those suckers didn't want to leave.

^That's the first I'm hearing about it. Here's video:

thanks Mike for the hiking link!

The whole famn damily!

I'd almost bet these youngens will be gone within a week or so. Definitely getting antsy, ready to fledge, and Jackie and Shadow are leaving them alone more often. Seem to be feeding them less often also. Hint hint!

I'm guessing a couple three more weeks at least. They did hatch kind of late.

I don't know which is which, but the blog says "Sandy is likely a female ♀️ and Luna is likely a male ♂️."

Screenshot_20260611_101410.jpg

glad these ones didn't get eaten

i got to see mom bring up a fresh fish the other day.

Might have a problem

This morning about 11:24 or so on the live feed, one of the eaglets was out on the far branch and when they when to hop over their sibling to get back in the nest, knocked it out of the nest to a branch below. You could see flapping wings for a spell, but that has stopped. Now the cameras are panning trying to find where the bird ended up.

Fingers crossed the wings were strong enough and it didn't fall to the ground.

Oh, crap. The blog says "Everyone keep calm, Sandy fledged and we located her flying on her security camera. Jackie is there. Please stay out of the habitat at this time."

The event:

02_25.jpg

I did a short screen recording of the incident: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1SXQcREnvRI

This shows Sandy falling, landing upside down, then escaping that predicament and flying (?) off. No more reports yet. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLQsT3wIVzA

New update from FOBBV -

In attempting to return to the nest from the front porch by jumping over Sandy, Luna accidentally knocked Sandy off her perch. Sandy was lodged in branches at two points below the nest tree for awhile, but soon released and righted herself. She was soaring or flapping as she released ~ a very good sign. Then FOBBV reported that she had been seen flying on their security camera. Hopefully we’ll see her on the webcam soon

Luna just fledged at 09:24 their time!!

Way to go, Luna.

From yesterday's blog:

Daily Fun Fact:  “ACCIDENTAL FLEDGE”: An accidental fledge is one of the most heart-stopping moments you can witness on an eagle cam. By 80+ days old, an eaglet has the muscle mass of an adult, but their teenage confidence hasn't quite caught up yet. When an eaglet gets bumped out of the nest by its brother or sister, it transforms a standard afternoon into a high-stakes, chaotic milestone. It is very common to see an eaglet get knocked off, slip down to a lower branch, and catch themselves by a single claw—briefly hanging completely upside down like a bat before their grip slips and they are forced into the open air. When they are knocked into the open air, their brain instantly switches from "nest mode" to "survival flight mode." Their wings take over, and they will instinctively glide or flap toward the nearest safe landing spot, completing a successful first flight entirely by accident. Adult eagles like Jackie and Shadow have extraordinary hearing and vision. They track the exact trajectory of the falling chick and listen for their loud "food squeals." The parents will immediately adapt, changing their delivery route to bring fish directly to the new tree where the accidental fledgling is hiding out, keeping them completely safe and well-fed. The fledgling will spend the next few days practicing flying from tree to tree, and may make it back to the nest!

Well, feeling rather lonely, Luna was inspired to fledge at 9:24 today and flew to the top of a tree a couple of trees over where Shadow (presumably) was hanging out. Flew to the top and has been hanging out on top for about 20 minutes now. See camera 2.

Maybe Jackie's hanging out with Sandy on a different tree. It appears to me Sandy wasn't strong enough yet to defy gravity but was strong enough to glide and not fall to the ground, but what do I  know. Hopefully Sandy's strength allows her to fly soon.

(Wow, 2 posts while I was typing.)

Can you imagine what that feels like? Taking off on your first flight?

Oh shit we probably know this better than most.

Never mind.

Looks like Sandy and Luna found their way back to the nest.

Screenshot_20260702_114843.jpg

They look wiser and more alert than before.

I was thinking about relating to the first flight experience and can imagine that some are like Luna's but some are like Sandy's too.............

I think it's cool they have a sense of place. I have to believe that's not really instinct; it's memory, and thoughts of how to get back.
