Im always blown away at all birds' nest building abilities. It isn't something that the parents teach them. It is inherent knowledge. From hummingbirds to eagles, It's astonoshing that with nothing more than materials from their surrounding environment, they can build the perfect structure for nesting, egg laying, hatching and development of their offspring. Able to withstand almost anything mother nature throws at it as well. Truly remarkable.

Number 2 today

Go Jackie!

Tuned in & I just caught Jackie & Shadow changing places.

Thank you

A Big Bear eagle egg has been lost, but hope for more eggs remains.

Ravens visited the famous aerie after Jackie and Shadow left their eggs unattended for a few hours.

Balance of nature ....

From today's entry in today's Recap Report:

Eagles typically lay only one clutch of eggs per year, but they are biologically capable of producing a second, known as a replacement clutch, if the first set is lost early in the nesting season. Big Bear’s eagles Jackie and Shadow laid a replacement clutch in February 2021 after their eggs were lost to Ravens. Bald eagles are considered “indeterminate layers.” If an egg is broken or removed early in the laying cycle, touch sensors in their brood patch may detect its absence and fail to trigger the “off” switch, allowing the female to continue producing eggs.

paging Mike Edwards. Hello. Any news to report?

Different Mike but...

New Egg !- Egg # 1  / Clutch # 2

Thanks, Mike, and good timing, roland. Looks like this new egg just came today. I've been checking the nest semi-frequently, and was losing hope for this year.

I looked earlier today, Jackie & Shadow were both there early morning smiley

.....I also saw the Raven checking out the nest a couple days ago. angry

No news is good news. Pip watch begins March 31st.

Big Bear is heading into some fine spring weather this week, with temps in the low 70s.

A pip was observed earlier this morning. Hatching is underway.

Good morning!

Hatching and a Pip!

The first egg is still in the process of hatching, it is not considered hatched until it is completely free of the egg shell. The chick has popped its head out of the shell to say a happy hatch day to mom and dad!

It also appears that the second egg has a pip. It is not well defined as of this morning, but we will likely see more progress throughout the day.

Congratulations Jackie & Shadow, their work has just begun.

Thank you again for following this grand journey of Jackie and Shadow.

The FOBBV Team

Nice. They have a few more days of sweet spring weather before things cool off with a chance of some precipitation late next week.

"How do you like your eggs?" takes on a new meaning here.

It's a beautiful thing!

They had a nice feeding at about 7:00 Pacific time. Nice to see the second one up and standing and being fed. They're on their way!

The nation will be captivated once again with an added bonus - getting educated about habitat protection this year with the threatened sale of land.

wow just got caught up on this thread and reading the big bear valley website.

didn't notice mention of backpacking / hiking trails/ tent camping -- is that even possible on this sensitive land ?
noticed there are flying squirrels -- never seen one!

Big Bear Lake is surrounded by San Bernardino National Forest, so there's lots of backpacking, hiking trails, and tent camping in the area.

While checking the nest cam this morning, I clicked this suggested link, and got sucked right into it. The Monterey Bay Aquarium Live Jelly Cam:

It's the best thing on the internet! Hope these chicks make it all the way. Last year's experience - watching the chicks take flight from the nest - was the best thing ever!!!

Fascinating watching fierce looking eagles gently caring for the floofs. I don't like when they both leave the nest.

> I don't like when they both leave the nest.

After the raven raid earlier this year, I've started checking the blog before the video.

That battle with the ravens yesterday was a bit concerning. Those suckers didn't want to leave.

^That's the first I'm hearing about it. Here's video:

thanks Mike for the hiking link!
