The thread re: class action & comment about "found money" got me thinking about the literal instances I've happened upon re: finding cash on the ground.
Guess it depends, but normally the very first thought is: "Is this what I think it is?".
Then, I kinda have two thoughts at the same time: "Does this belong to someone nearby?" and "Will I benefit from this?".
If it's clearly a "fair game ground score" and nobody is around, I admit to becoming a little excited about my "good fortune".
However, once I have time to ponder, I can't help but think of the fact that somebody lost that money and feel bad (to a point).

Therein lies the rub ... cash doesn't have an ID attached re: who it belongs to & not all people are going to be honest.
However, what if you're waiting in line at the grocery store check out line and you spot a 20 on the ground between you and mother who's fumbling to pay the cashier and keep her kids in line. Do you ask if she dropped it?

When I was 13 my friend and I found a briefcase with a couple of hundred in it. We tracked down the owner by his library bill. The cheapskate gave us $20 to split.
At an airport, my then wife came out of the restroom by the gate with a hand full of very large gold and diamond rings. Someone had taken them off to wash and clearly spaced them. Our flight was about to leave, so we gave them to a security guard. I'm sure that he bought the Camaro of his dreams with them.

I found $87 outside the grocery store once. I gave it to the manager thinking that nobody would ever claim it. However, later that day, I got a call from an older lady thanking me for turning in the cash, which she said she lost and it was her grocery money for the week.
Now if I found $100,000 in a briefcase, might just be tempted because you know it involved something shady.

At the so amazing BadAss shop where i work on Sundays, this oh so cool guy came in and bought up a few choice items~
A while later, he came in frantically, looking for his phone. Turns out a lady shopping at the time noticed it on a display table
He was so appreciative, he gave her 5 minutes (he had to GO) to choose any item, and he'd buy it for her.
She humbly picked an $8 cool 70s style top

A guy down the street found it about 200 yards from my place and called my cell (# was on my business card in said wallet). Returned with all CC's and the $1200 inside. I tried to make him take $100 but he would have no part of it.

I found $15 today on the
I found $15 today on the ground outside after eating lunch. I saw a receipt on the sidewalk that was folded, but looked too thick ... something didn't add up, so I kicked it over and it exposed a $5 bill wrapped inside the receipt. Picked up the entire thing and unrolled it to find another ten inside. It was a receipt from Cost Cutters dated 11/18/17 and had the cost cutter's name and time ... so had thought that I could probably track this down, but in the end, even if it worked out and the person got their money back, it'd be a bit like a "false economy" or eating celery in terms of the probable lack of a "cumulative net gain" when you add up all the time and energy to get that $15 back into the pocket of its "rightful owner" ... let alone the risk of whether someone at cost cutters might just pocket the money. So, I kept it. Another "reason" I told myself was that I had just left a slightly bigger tip by giving the Nepalize restaurant exactly $15 and told them to just keep it. Less than 60 seconds later, I find the same amount in the same denominations.

So, I'm leaving Hoboken station on the way to work, and I see a bill flutter towards the ground from the direction of a fellow commuter. I grab it before it even hits the ground - It's a $20-. I donated $50- to a friend of the Zone's cancer surgery GoFundMe.
