What are your thoughts when you "find cash"?

Forums:

The thread re: class action & comment about "found money" got me thinking about the literal instances I've happened upon re: finding cash on the ground.

Guess it depends, but normally the very first thought is:  "Is this what I think it is?".

Then, I kinda have two thoughts at the same time:  "Does this belong to someone nearby?" and "Will I benefit from this?".

If it's clearly a "fair game ground score" and nobody is around, I admit to becoming a little excited about my "good fortune".

However, once I have time to ponder, I can't help but think of the fact that somebody lost that money and feel bad (to a point).

Post about it

Here we go.

I guess it's not raining money for you right now?

i found 2 ten dollars bills on the ground last thursday walking down the street on the way to see ryan adams. my first thought was lets go grab a beer. been a long time since i found some currency.

I found a $20 in front of the movie theater and no one was anywhere around.

My wife wanted me to give it to the manager so he could find the rightful owner.

I laughed at her.

Groundscore!

Sure, I'll see if anyone is looking around like they lost something, but after I'm assured of that, it's basically free beer.

The human eye can spot a dollar bill floating in the wind, like an eagle.

My wife wanted me to give it to the manager so he could find the rightful owner.

I laughed at her<<<

Therein lies the rub ... cash doesn't have an ID attached re: who it belongs to & not all people are going to be honest.

However, what if you're waiting in line at the grocery store check out line and you spot a 20 on the ground between you and mother who's fumbling to pay the cashier and keep her kids in line.   Do you ask if she dropped it?

Groundscores are good (if the owner is not to be found).

I was lacking proper flower and paper supplies before the Buckeye Lake show on 6/25/88.

After I made it through the gate I found a cigarette pack on the ground with $5.00, some buds, and 2 pieces of paper. Score!

When I was 13 my friend and I found a briefcase with a couple of hundred in it. We tracked down the owner by his library bill. The cheapskate gave us $20 to split.

At an airport, my then wife came out of the restroom by the gate with a hand full of very large gold and diamond rings. Someone had taken them off to wash and clearly spaced them. Our flight was about to leave, so we gave them to a security guard. I'm sure that he bought the Camaro of his dreams with them.

Look for an obvious owner.

If none present, keep it.

Would you have kept the jewelry at the airport?

Walking into concert in hartford in 78-79...we were young...and broke...dont know how we afforded tix to fleetwood mac...had to be at least $14....

We found a  $50 on civic center steps...and about two more steps up, was an ounce of weed that ya could barely fold top of....we did our job and looked to see if anyone was obviously "losing their shit"....there wasnt....

We had a great time at show...we became very popular for cpl hours inside...:)

Spread the wealth

I groundscored a zip of kind on the ground at Oxford, Maine. It was free, so it was promptly rolled into fatties and smoked. Absolutely...spread the wealth.

Found $20 in the bushes at the atm last sunday.  Figured is was cosmic payback for being shortchanged $10 by the bartender on friday night.

I found $87 outside the grocery store once.   I gave it to the manager thinking that nobody would ever claim it.   However, later that day, I got a call from an older lady thanking me for turning in the cash, which she said she lost and it was her grocery money for the week.

Now if I found $100,000 in a briefcase, might just be tempted because you know it involved something shady.

A nickel earned is worth more than a dollar found.

I always look and will always pick up a Lincoln heads up penny. Tails up ,I will not pick up.

No defined reason that I can remember, I have just always done it that way.

gathers/spills, all that. wink

I did find a wallet with a driver's license & about $50 about a year ago. I returned it cash intact to a very grateful owner. Had I found the same amount of $ on the ground & no ID it would depend. If someone was looking & clearly had lost it, I'd return it. Otherwise, I'd say it's fair game

Have you not heard of that madman who lit a lantern in the bright morning hours, ran to the market place, and cried incessantly: "I seek God! I seek God!" -- As many of those who did not believe in God were standing around just then, he provoked much laughter. Has he got lost? asked one. Did he lose his way like a child? asked another. Or is he hiding? Is he afraid of us? Has he gone on a voyage? emigrated? -- Thus they yelled and laughed.

Used Cars was one of my dad's favorite movies.

Gerritt Graham who co-stars later wrote lyrics for Weir.

i find and turn in stuff all the time if there is a lost and found.

someone returned my google phone recently, i was happy.

kinda wish i took the pair of shades in mex on the beach. cutstie parking lot...but passed.

I found a folded single dollar bill on the ground today. I unfolded it to see if there anything "interesting" in it...no such luck, ha ha...

Kudos to the returner.  I found a phone last summer in Telluride and it can be somewhat of an undertaking for a number of reasons ... ultimately traced owner and returned it to him @ Phish shows at Dicks.

The groundscore gods have been very generous to me, with various gifts

There's never been an obvious owner to any of them

On the same token; plenty of folks have hopefully gathered and well enjoyed what I've spilled over time

Cute sidenote:

At the so amazing BadAss shop where i work on Sundays, this oh so cool guy came in and bought up a few choice items~

A while later, he came in frantically, looking for his phone. Turns out a lady shopping at the time noticed it on a display table

He was so appreciative, he gave her 5 minutes (he had to GO) to choose any item, and he'd buy it for her.

She humbly picked an $8 cool 70s style top

Made my day

I adore my gig  (:

I lost my wallet a few months ago, left on the hood of kids car and he drove off. A guy down the street found it about 200 yards from my place and called my cell (# was on my business card in said wallet). Returned with all CC's and the $1200 inside. I tried to make him take $100 but he would have no part of it.

Made my month. Thank you Paul

I like throwing pennies on the ground for those people that think that finding one brings good luck

I found $15 today on the ground outside after eating lunch.  I saw a receipt on the sidewalk that was folded, but looked too thick ... something didn't add up, so I kicked it over and it exposed a $5 bill wrapped inside the receipt.  Picked up the entire thing and unrolled it to find another ten inside.  It was a receipt from Cost Cutters dated 11/18/17 and had the cost cutter's name and time ... so had thought that I could probably track this down, but in the end, even if it worked out and the person got their money back, it'd be a bit like a "false economy" or eating celery in terms of the probable lack of a "cumulative net gain" when you add up all the time and energy to get that $15 back into the pocket of its "rightful owner" ... let alone the risk of whether someone at cost cutters might just pocket the money.  So, I kept it.   Another "reason" I told myself was that I had just left a slightly bigger tip by giving the Nepalize restaurant exactly $15 and told them to just keep it.  Less than 60 seconds later, I find the same amount in the same denominations.

So, I'm leaving Hoboken station on the way to work, and I see a bill flutter towards the ground from the direction of a fellow commuter. I grab it before it even hits the ground - It's a $20-. I try to catch up with the woman hustling away, "excuse me, you dropped this, excuse me, you dropped this, EXCUSE ME..." She ignored me and kept rushing away.

I donated $50- to a friend of the Zone's cancer surgery GoFundMe.

Flip side - walking the dog at 6 a.m., find $100- bill on the sidewalk. Paid my PSEG bill.

My initial thought is, "Look, I found some cash!".

I found $10k in a bank bag in the front of a shopping cart once in a parking lot. I opened it and there was not any contact information so I turned it in to the grocery store manager where I found it. He took my phone number and stuff. It ended up belonging to an 80 year old man who had forgot he put in there while shopping. He went back for it. He got my number and called me to thank me and offered me a reward for turning it in, which I declined.

Celery has a lot of fiber, and an excellent peanut butter delivery system. It should not be besmirched.

My first thought is "new shoes"!!! Then I recover and give it to someone in need...

Funny how that "line" can be a very fine indeed.   I suppose the important part is trying to do the "right thing" when you can and where it'll make a difference with positive energy.

... seemed to work out that way for utahMG & 80yr old man!

same goes for American cheese (white or "regular") ... I suppose there's also a deeper metaphor beyond "celery"

Thank you, Jesus.

i would have been neck deep in ladyboys in a back alley pattaya dive bar before you even made it back inside the grocery store
