NHS provokes fury with indefinite surgery ban for smokers and obese

The NHS will ban patients from surgery indefinitely unless they lose weight or quit smoking, under controversial plans drawn up in Hertfordshire…

In recent years, a number of areas have introduced delays for such patients – with some told operations will be put back for months, during which time they are expected to try to lose weight or stop smoking. But the new rules, drawn up by clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) in Hertfordshire, say that obese patients “will not get non-urgent surgery until they reduce their weight” at all, unless the circumstances are exceptional.

The criteria also mean smokers will only be referred for operations if they have stopped smoking for at least eight weeks, with such patients breathalysed before referral.

But that could NEVER happen here.

I love how Republicans point to delays in single payer countries like a delay is more horrible than the American system where you simply don't get the care at all.

Bring on the death panels!

I don’t have a problem with people being told they need to make lifestyle changes if they are truly interested in staying alive.

And im pretty sure Hertfordshire-On-Grange was where Led Zeppelin recorded Led Zeppelin III with no power or heat, only cocaine and wine, which would probably eliminate them from consideration for surgery.

if only rich people can see doctors....do they just stay with other rich people and won't be exposed to the rest of the populace?

Do people flip out when they tell you you shouldn’t eat before surgery and that you can’t do recreational drugs when you are in hospital? No i just deal with it.

NON-URGENT SURGERY

It sure as hell makes a ton of sense for people to lose weight or quit smoking before non-urgent surgeries. I'd have to imagine that recovery times and costs would decrease substantially, and outcomes would be much better.

Plus, it beats unnecessary and demeaning vaginal probes for abortions.

I had a nurse give me the business once for chewing gum before surgery.

After reading the article, it makes sense to me.

Might as well save some money, while increasing possibility of recovery and ongoing better health, by delaying non-urgent procedures until reasonable provisions are met.

And it looks like exceptions can be made on a case-by-case basis.

People still have some freedom of choice regarding their health.

death panels.

Meanwhile, here in the US:

A coworker has a history of stomach problems, and has already had a huge hunk of his intestines removed. Over the last year he has had constant nausea, pain and weight-loss. His GI felt a bump and ordered a CAT scan.

The insurance company denied the scan because he hasn't yet lost 20% of his body weight.

thom is concerned about stockholders not your coworker or grandma

Thom isn't quite sure what he's concerned about.

Well, he does love to rile the liberals.
