As usual/as always, it's Mayer, Chementi & Oteil who make this band interesting, and now that Jay Lane is getting comfortable he's raising the bar as well.
Lane may not be a brilliant professional drummer, but he is still a professional drummer, and unlike poor Billy K. these days Lane can SNAP the snare drum, SNAP a cymbal crash and can actually play a drum fill or two. There's clearly more punch to their sound with Lane.
(And it cracks me up that I write that, because I'm no big fan of Jay Lane and I LOVE Billy Kreutzmann, but everybody gets old. Even Willie Mays was old & bad when he played for the Mets.)
It's great that Weir is continuing to be as good as he is. He still sings really well (at least on his own songs) and when he's not killing cats his guitar can still be very creative (usually playing off of Mayer/Chementi/Otiel riffs) but really, the quality of this band is all about & Company, very little about Dead.
And don't get me wrong, I love Bob Weir, Billy K. and even what's left of Mickey Hart, and I think it's great that they're still on the road playing to multiple generations of fans, but for me it's always been about the music being played in the moment, not some nostalgia deal (which is why I still always see Phil when I can, because on any given night Phil can still rearrange 3-dimensional reality. Musically he's still the best of them all).
And I just can't believe that Mayer wants to leave this music. The guy has completely assimilated into the GD musical world, he's developed into an outstanding improvisational player and he has absolutely no other outlet for that.
If anything, I could see him leave D&C, steal Chementi & Oteil away, get a top quality drummer and start his own GD inspired band.
Would it sell as well as D$C? Maybe not, because the masses always need "the singer", but even it they wouldn't play stadiums without Weir & Drums/Space, Grateful Dead music is more popular now than it's ever been, and it's still being played well by new generations of players. This music isn't going anywhere.
Well, Mayer has gotten really fucking good at playing this music. Oteil and Chimenti both kick ass. A monster drummer and a high-energy 2nd guitarist, who also has a voice, would make for a great band. As tempos would no longer be an issue, that band could and should draw back all those folks who can't deal with "Slow & Co."
Last night was the first full show I've listened to. It was way better than I expected, and I like DeadCo. I was really impressed by Set II. There was nothing slow about it. My litmus test is Eyes, which I'm happy if I never again hear it live. It was really good.

More sensitive and soulful playing IMO!

Some, but not all. While I recognize that Mayer has some chops on guitar, I am not a fan. Dude just creeps me out and makes my skin crawl.

Otiel is a pretty amazing singer, but whatever the final configuration is I think this band is coming.
