Driving on the Beach

Forums:

Grew up on a barrier island on the Atlantic coast of Florida and we had mile after mile of white sand beaches that were open to vehicles.  You had to know what you were doing, but if you did, you could get to way secluded party spots far from anything, especially if you had a 4x4.

Here in Oregon, there are a handful of beaches that are open to vehicles and some people just don't know what they are doing:

I have talked with many people for whom driving on the beach is a foreign concept.  Can you drive on your beaches?

no,  but love to do it when i can.

tides, how do they work?

Florida they are taking it away mile by mile.

Only a few areas it is allowed

Sung to the tune of Twistin' By The Pool.

(Anyone else remember MAD Magazine song parodies?)

Almost same as driving in snow...DONT spin those tires!!!

San Felipe in the 80's .

Shame about that van.  Hopefully they got it towed out.  I can't imagine trying to pull a trailer on the beach without serious 4-wheel drive and proper tires.

They even abandoned their bikes on the roof rack...

I wonder if that qualifies under Maritime salvage laws.

>>>>Hopefully they got it towed out.

No.  They have been trying to get it out for two days.  The trailer has since been destroyed by the tide and pounding surf:

Vacationed in St.Augustine a couple of years ago. Saw plenty of morons stuck in the sand.

That's where I grew up and drove all along the beaches.  The rednecks in their bubba trucks would patrol the beaches and charge folks to pull them out of the sand.  I have driven up and down those beaches hundreds of times and only got stuck once.

Last time I was down there visiting my folks, they had set up a fixed course with traffic cones to follow down St. Augustine Beach and traffic was in a one way direction.  No more going wherever you want.

It seems like driving on the beach would pollute the sand, and hence the water, with rubber, oils and other petroleum crap. No?

nice to drive on beach in humboldt/mickeyville...

in-laws live on long beach peninsula in wash. you can cruise for miles.

donuts in the subaru

That's a shame about the trailer.  They probably had a ton of camping gear and food / supplies in that.
If they get the Van out,  it's going to take a lot of work to get it in running condition.

Differentials,  transmission,  engine will all need to be drained and refilled and probably Brake system too.
Electronic / electric systems might be OK but I doubt it.

Probably the insurance company doesn't cover claims with off-off-road driving.

Judi, all that crap is on Santa Barbara beaches and they don't allow vehicles on the beach.

Meanwhile, Pismo is clean.

Still do it every year in Outer Banks, NC.

Northern end of Corolla doesn’t even have paved roads...you HAVE to drive on the beach to get to your house.

It’s a beautiful drive to see the wild mustangs.

I stayed in Duck, NC a couple of times.

Traffic was unbearable.

Takes about 45 mins to travel 5-7 miles.

One way in, one out.

Im done with the Outer Banks.

Although, I would like to try a vacation in Sept./ Oct.

Gotta wait for the last kiddo to graduate.

We have Island Beach State Park. Folks can drive on a section of this 10 mile long stretch of beach, but it is only for surfcasters. You must have fishing gear for every individual in your vehicle.

Was thinking of IBSP but didn't know they still allowed some beach driving.

Would never take my 2WD pickup on the sand (it gets stuck in mud & snow).

The AWD Subaru might be OK,  but low ground - clearance.

Driving at Island Beach State Park requires a permit and a number of safety items like a tow rope/chain, a jack with a board to support it in the sand, a minimum of a 1/4 tank of gas, flashlight, tire pressure gauge (lowering pressure to the 10 - 15 psi range is key) and a first aid kit as well as the fishing gear noted above. When you get to the entrance to the beach you are checked 24 hour a day and they turn you away if you are missing any of those things. On Long Beach Island you also need a permit but can only drive on the beach from Oct 1st on. That is during the LBI Surf Fishing Tournament and at any given moment you might see a hundred or more vehicles making their way to their favorite fishing holes. You don't need fishing gear to drive the beach but you will certainly feel like the odd man out if you don't.

Judit if your car is leaking oil it's not real cool...and yes you can run over nature if you're just rippin' around...

Ski, seems as if you've fished IBSP before. I have a couple of friends who used to do it, never did so myself. Love the park though, with the exception of the ticks.

I have fished IBSP before. Since I used to have a house on LBI, I fished, and still fish, that a lot more.
