Favorite Summer Stuff

Forums:

I love the smell of tomato plants.

Thunderstorms accompanied by a 20° drop in temperature.

summer dresses (not mine, mine are shabby), lightweight clothing, flipflops, fresh fruit and vegetables and the absolute absence of snow and ice.

>>>I love the smell of tomato plants. in the morning.  Smells like (a) victory (garden).

Touché, José. And I'd like to add stone fruit.

Mushrooms as far as the eye can see. all for the pickins

Long days.

Spending hot days lounging at the swimming hole

Gardening.  Growing veggies and a little fruit.

Air conditioning

Hiking/cycling under the cool Redwood canopy on warm days.

From my earlier life back east: Fireflies.

Watermelon until I'm sick of it.

Then more.  With feta and mint.

Summer tomatoes, corn....

And good call on the fireflies Mike. Sure do miss those...

Bluest, try it with basil instead of mint.

i'm getting ready to have mini split ductless heat pumps installed; I'm hoping they will be some of my favorite summer stuff. This place is getting hot.

I love it with basil, to Mark. I made that when we went to Catch a Big One's gathering.

Training the wisteria against the eaves all the way around the porch

fresh picked blueberries

Pretty sure that's when I first tried it Judit. Been a fav ever since.   Have you heard from Catch lately?

Since we're around the campfire, can you tell your watermelon story growing up again Judit?

While judit works on that, I'm going to throw skinny-dipping under the stars into the mix.

been a while...lol....making love in a big bed of wildflowers.

I was banned from the Chicago Botanical Gardens in '17....j/k.

A perfectly ripe white nectarine that's been chilled in the fridge for about an hour. Eaten over the sink, of course.

Judit i hope it goes well! we also have a ductless home and have considered ac

this being the first summer of our changed climate i have been pretty freaked out. much of what isn't on fire is under water, some of which our own pholks are experiencing as we speak.

so there's that.

on the other side:
yesterday we made Alex's 2nd batch of organic pickles, although it was also the anniversary of his mother's and his being mowed down by a drunk driver which resulted in her death and his near death. July is also when I went fully cray in 2016 and stopped living with my kids.

so i kind of hate July. the only good thing about this month is it was our 10th anniversary of meeting, and i love him more all the time

yeah i am debbie downering all over this joint on this full moon day lol do'h

but this is my reality, so yeah.

seasonwise: spring and fall have always been more my jams

happy summer to those who celebrate?

Lazy Beach days and outdoor concerts

Frog Hollow Farm in Brentwood CA grows the most amazing peaches. Every bite is just a concentration of everything good about summer. It isn't summer until I can get my hands on some of their peaches.

>>>and shohei ohtani

The Onion said he is thinking of playing for a Major League Baseball team.

Some tasty waves and a cool buzz.

Going out into Barnaget Bay and harvesting some summer flounder, clams, blue crabs, frying the flounder and then adding tarter sauce, steaming the clams and crabs. Some fresh corn on the cob with a mess of heirloom Jersey tomatos and then sitting down with friends and/or family and having a feast as the sun sets over the bay.

Repeat as needed.

Letting the oscillating sprinkler run over me on a hot day, or sitting under the umbrella
while the sprinkler sprays over the umbrella with the water draining off it that feels like a cocoon of coolth.

Mark, I tried to reach Catch via email but didn't hear back. I hope he's okay.

jlp, the heat pumps are working, it's cool in my house. Maybe too cool, in the main part of the house; I must need a little help learning how to make it work the way I want it to.

blackrock, I didn't know what stories I've shared. I did a search and these are from the 130˚ thread from August, 2020. Did I tell others?  https://vivalazone.org/other-stuff/130-degrees

> When I was a kid my dad was a watermelon broker with his dad and brother. We lived in Brawley, CA in the summers from June til the watermelon season there was over, then we'd move north up the Central Valley til we left Fresno in August. The temperature in Brawley averaged 110˚ but was 115˚ pretty often and higher once in a while. It was awful. That is all.

> Alan, the fermenting rinds are all too real in the box cars they transported the melons in. Melons got cracked as casualties of loading and the smell of the box cars in that heat was bad. Unforgettably bad.

Mojitos...

Judit, what yrs did you live in Fresno?  If I knew that, I forgot it.

And Catch's phone is disconnected. Maybe he got a new number.

We were only in Fresno for a couple of weeks at the end of the summer, 1949-1961, Mark.
Thanks for the Catch catchup.

Was really good to talk with them.

So, we lived in the same town for a few weeks in 1960 and 1961. We scooted from Clovis in 1960.  I think Blaise may have been there then also.

An unseasonal rainstorm in an otherwise hot, dry, and dusty place. I love the smell of petrichor in the morning.
